View Full Version : Are there more 'Super' games, or 'Adventure' games?

The other day it just sort of occurred to me how many Super games there are, you know, with 'super' in the title. And it seems odd to me that there is nothing strange about that to me, since the word 'super' in any other context sounds, well, super gay. Stereotypically, of course (see Simpsons, or most any show with a gay person).
Anyway, I don't know why I started thinking about it, but I got to wondering if there are more 'Adventure' games, or Super games.
Examples so that it is clear what I mean:
The Adventures of Bayou Billy
The Adventures of Rad Gravity
Super Off-Road
Super Dodge Ball
Obviously I'm just looking at my NES collection, but I don't mean to limit it to that. Still based on what I have just in my NES collection, there are 12 'Super' titles, and 3 'Adventure' titles. I'm guessing 'super' wins, largely because it was such a standard naming scheme for SNES games.
edit: if not one of these two, is there a more common word in game titles?

Yes, "Army Men".

There was so much of the adding "Super" to a title for the SNES version, and -64 adding for the N64 version, I was really surprised that we didn't have Super Mario Cubed, F-Zero Cubed, etc. with the Gamecube. It could've been done with the superscript-3 to look better, of course.

Hah. I was thinking "Madden" myself.

How about the number 2, anywhere in the title? ex: madden 92-2002-etc., other sports games, any sequel. Makes sense.
With the shear number of "Super Mario...." games, super wins.

Yea, I came to nominate either "Mario" or "Mega".
Shit, if you're willing to accept "Man" then it's just all over. Thank god more games don't have the number 64 in the title, though. That was a worse fad than the bum rush of Super games.

"Super" did get slapped on a lot of games that it didn't really need to be slapped onto.
"Super" Castlevania 4? Did someone misplace "Regular" Castlevania 4 somewhere?

It's ok, they're picking up the slack now with all the "wii" games. But that was only after the brief "advance" fad for GBA titles.

There's a game coming out for the Wii called "Dewy's Adventure"

Makes sense for games on the Gameboy Advance to have "Advance" in the title.

The worst offenders were the Mario games for GBA: Super Mario Advance. All they needed was "Super Mario Mega Adventure Advance Live 2005 2 Limited Edition."

So, which category does Super Adventure Island fit in?
;)
Was Super Breakout the first to use the 'Super'?
I know with hardware, Ralph Baer wanted to do a 'Super Odyssey'.

*starts gigling and holds up a SNES cart*
Solitare! Super Solitare! It's a freakn free game on almost any PC! It's Solitare! It's neither super, extreme, amazing, adventurious, incredable, wonderfull, or anything! It's just freakn Solitare man!
The point is, "super" was used so much on titles for the SNES. There's around 89-100 SNES games that have the word "super" somewheres in the title. Just SNES games! That's also just for the US release, not counting Europe or Japan.

Nothing touches "Super". A little simple, unscientific research (searching "U.S. Game Releases" on the DP Online Rarity Guide) brought up 6 pages when searching "super" (which doesn't even include all the accessories with "super" in the title) and only 3 pages when searching "adventure".
Other suggestions made here don't even come close-- numbers obviously don't count (so "2" is out despite 16 pages!) and things like Mario and Sonic could never even dream of having 6 pages worth of titles (which is definitely a good thing; we don't need that many games with one character). If anyone has any idea of something that tops "super" than bring it, but I doubt anything does.

The odd thing is, on the title label, it says CASTLEVANIA IV
weird, huh?
But on the front with the art SUPER is seen in the title's illustration.

Well, according to the Online Rarity Guide, there are:
557 US releases with the word "Super" in the title
262 US releases with the word "Adventure" in the title

What about the stupid DS subtitle thing for DS games?

All we need is a "Super Mario Adventure DS" and the circle will be complete.
