I just got a new LCD tv this week and I'm having problems playing PS1 games on my PS2 with it. Whenever I boot a PS1 game up, I see the Playstation logo but as soon as the game loads, the graphics get distorted and I only see a portion of the game screen along the top half of my TV while the PS logo is still on the bottom half.

I don't have any problems with PS2 games, so I don't understand what the problem is. I know PS1 games weren't really designed with HD in mind, so is it a compatibility issue with the TV or something? I'm just using component cables.

Do you have the graphics smoothing option on? I've seen this cause issues, though not like the one you're having.

Is it one game or many?

Are the games retail copies?

Have you hooked anything else up to the TV?

Are you sure the game is backwards compatible?

Is it a foreign game on a US system?

Are you using an audio/video switchbox?

Make sure your TV isn't trying to upscale anything.

Do not use the HD Loader for PS One games.

Just trying to get through the basics, bear with me.

There should be no compatibility issues at all with the TV. PS One games play fine on mine.

I'm sure you already checked the connections, but... is it possible you have a bad wire? I have recently had to get a new cable for my dvd player. It was giving bad static on the picture. If you played with the wire it went clear, but eventually regressed. Thankfully it was only the wire and not the unit it self (I said unit, huh, huh).

I have played ps1 games on a ps2 on 3 different HDTVs-
1. samsung CRT hdtv
2. sharp aquos (2 years old)
3. sharp aqous (a few weeks ok)

I have used component cables, and there has never been a problem with the display.

If your ps2 plays ps2 games fine, which it does, this leads me to believe you either have a defective (somehow?) set, or your tv sucks (sorry to sound harsh). I read that you had lag issues while playing beatmania, and your set has an 8ms response time. I played beatmania (us version) on my older LCD with a 12ms response time and had no lag issues whatsoever.

I would take the set back if possible and get another one, or maybe get a different set altogether?

Well, I just tried a set of composite cables and the PS1 games played fine now.

I was using a Sony brand PS3 component cable on the PS2 (and it was an opened/returned item from Best Buy)...could that be my problem? From what I've read though, these things work fine on PS2's, so I don't understand why it'd be giving me problems. I tried a couple other PS1 games and I had the same result. It's a modded US Slim PS2 I'm using BTW.

@walrusmonger...are you *sure* you don't have any lag on Beatmania with an LCD tv with a 12ms response time?? One of the DDR boards I belong to say it's pointless to try playing Bemani or any other kind of music/rythm games with a LCD tv because the timing is too strict (especially on Beatmania). Said the only LCD's that don't lag with them are Sony Bravia's

The modded part might be what's screwing things up.

I use a PS2 slim with Sony Brand cables on a Sony Wega and everything plays fine, no line issues at all.

I'm not an expert player by a long shot, but I honestly didn't notice any lag when I played it. If you want I can try it on my new aquos (6ms response time), but I don't own the 12ms one anymore so I can't help you.

Just let me know :)

This really pisses me off. I just tried the PS2 on another TV with component and the PS1 games ran fine. So I guess its gotta be a problem with the TV then but I don't understand what it could be. Something to do with the upscaling processor?

Walrusmonger, yeah if you don't mind doing that. Technically you CAN play Beatmania with the lag but you'll get way more 'Good's' than 'Greats'. At least that's what it was like for me. I've been playing IIDX for a while too, so maybe that's why I notice it.

I keep getting told conflicting info. Someone said that PS1 doesn't support component video and Wega's & Bravia's are the only TV's that'll play them and without lag. But the PS1 part doesn't make any sense because it I just tried it on a 20" Panasoinc with component. If anyone has a different LCD though that lets you play PS1 and without lag, I'd love to know what brand it is.

I just hooked up my PS2 and played beatmania and didn't notice any lag, but again I'm not a great player :)

Just for kicks I also threw it into my PS3 and tried to play with my controller- the screen acted weird from the upconversion, but it didn't lag. I suck even more with the controller.

Some hdtv's don't like low resolution material over component cables. I bet its a known issue with your tv and not a defect. I think some PS2 games even have problems, such as Ico.

"I keep getting told conflicting info. Someone said that PS1 doesn't support component video"

PS1 systems don't support component video, but PS1 games can be played through component just fine on a PS2 and PS3.

Alright, thanks for the help guys. I guess I'll just leave the PS2 hooked up with composite cables then since I didn't have any problems with them.

Don't know what I'm going to do about my Bemani games though. I'd almost rather go back to my crappy s-video tv than give them up. :(

I just got off tech support with Vizio and they kept telling me that the TV is fine and it's a problem with the PS1 games because they only support the 480 resolution. When I asked them how people with Wega's and other hdtv's got PS1 games working fine, they just kept telling me it's a problem with the game resolution since it worked fine with composite cables and refused to admit it's an issue with the TV.

So is there anyone here with a cheap hdtv (like my Vizio) that can't play PS1 games with component? I just want to reassure myself that I'm not the only one.
