I came across this and I have never seen one before so I scooped it up. A not for resale Zelda NES classic series. Does anyone have any info on this item?

Most unusual... All I know is if you're interested in parting with it, send me a message ;) ...

Sorry, I'm not very interested in parting with it at the moment. Just looking to see if this is rare at all.

Could it be a promotional item/display for a Classics rerelease (i.e. for the GBA)?

it was probably given out as a free prize or some kind of show item at a nintendo trade show.

very cute photoshopped image. I particularly like the translucency of the letters, very nice ;-)

While it is possible for this to be a modified image, I do believe that there might have been a time when Nintendo Power Magazine offered games as an incentive to subsribe to NP, or certain Nintendo Entertainment System bundles may have come with this Zelda as a pack in.
I remember that "Dragon Warrior" was an incentive for purchasing a Nintendo Power subscription, so it might be possible that this Zelda copy you have might be one of those as well.

...
Didn't they give out those copies of Dragon Warrior because the game NEVER SOLD AT ALL?

It did sell reasonably well, it just didn't sell to nintendo's expectations (they thought it'd be just as big of a hit in the us as it was in japan)
I know I paid full price for it, then got a second copy from np but it did come with a bunch of neato extras at the very least ;-)

On the box it say "The Original", which probably refer to the gray version at the time ?

Yes it's the gray version. No it is not photoshopped. It looks translucent because it is. It is a sticker.

I'd suggest taking a better picture though or at least ones from different angles. A single small picture like that isn't always the most helpful.

I do remember a Nintendo Power insert that was selling the NES classics re-releases. I have no reason to believe they would have been specially labelled though.
Maybe a "New NES" pack-in somewhere? (EDIT: nah... I guess Nintendo never put the boxes with pack in games)

Here is the pic of the eBay auction and a pic of Final Fantasy with the same sticker. They were both sold by the same guy and he told me it was some giveaway in Nintendo Power. I am just trying to see if this is rare at all.

not true,
duck hunt and gyromite came in thier ogirinal boxes in the deluxe (robot) set, and I beleive the canadian release with rc-proam came with its original box as well.
same thing with early versions of the action set (smb)

This is a legit piece of NES history. I used to have all three of the Classic NES release games ( Zelda 1 and 2 and Metroid, aside from Punch-Out!!) all with the same stickers all complete in box. From my understanding they were display copies at KaBee Toy stores and what not. They poped the game into the Glass Cased NES system and you could play it all the time the box was sitting right next to it saying "not for resale" as a display. They did it with Zelda 1,2 and Metroid... not sure about Punch-Out!! as I have never seen one. More or less a Demo of the game, but not a demo at all as they just stuck a sticker on it.
Finding one isn't the easiest, but value wise... I'd say it is worth just as much as a regular Classic NES series Zelda. I attempted to sell these like that (with the Not For Resale deal) about a year and a half ago on the bay, but no one seemed too interested in them as they fetched the same price as my other ones.
Good cool find though. If you are into collecting NES I'd say keep it as it is a unique piece of NES history
