Rare Not Working On Killer Instinct 3
In the most recent edition of Rare's fan mailbag feature "Scribes", the fans demand to know: Are Rare working on Killer Instinct 3?! Secondary and tertiary to this are questions about Jet Force Gemini and It's Mr. Pants sequels. Whatever! Anyway, Rare, Killer Instinct 3?
Rare denies it.
Purely out of contractual obligation, no, we're not working on KI3, no, we don't have a secret team in the basement finishing off JFG2, no, we're not brainstorming an exciting sequel to It's Mr. Pants and traditionally we're not big players in the RPG market either. Until we're ready to unveil some of the games beyond the new Banjo that we are working on, why not go back and sample some prime Rare goodness from the archives such as NES classics Time Lord or Super Glove Ball?
That certainly doesn't rule out an Xbox Live Arcade release of the first two Killer Instinct games, but it certainly doesn't fill the lil' TJ Combo in my soul with much in the way of combo-breakin' happiness. Guess we'll have to wait a little bit longer to engage in more ridiculous pirate skeleton versus giant lizard battles. Michael McWhertor

OK Rare get a clue please the gamers that played good ol Banjo back in the N64 days are all grown up now (well for the most part) and I wouldnt be surprised if Banjo doesnt exactly light up the fires of the 360 elite crowd.
Rare you are starting to officially SUCK!:bad-words: and I mean that with all my geekgamer heart.

yep thats what it says.
I mean sure Banjo is OK but I just think that the average 360 gamer MIGHT enjoy a whole new Killer Instinct game then again I could be wrong.
I know I would buy a 360 just to play a new KI.

Rare is and has always been overrated. Anyway, I thought all the "talent" at Rare left a year or so ago. It's just another development house now.

they are just comming up with ways they can milk people the most because of such a high demand they'll deny until nobody can take it anymore and then make it when they get low on cash.

I'm not working on Killer Instinct 3, either. I'd say it's about equally newsworthy.

Seriously. Who cares? Killer Instinct is one of the most awful fighting games to ever see release; easily on par with Primal Rage, Time Killers, and other abomonations.
Offically, their next release will be Banjo 3.
And Rare did make the fantastic and completely overlooked Viva Pinata. So to completely write them off is a bit much.

Actually, Killer Instinct was a joint venture between Midway, Nintendo, and Rare. So it's hard to figure out who owns the rights to KI.
But I'm pretty sure it was pretty much Nintendo's baby. I think Rare developed it, Nintendo was Rare's first party "go-to" company, back then. Midway was just the manufacturer of the arcade game.

I officially DISAGREE with you.
dont even try to down KI and compare it to games like Primal Rage or especially the god awful Time Killers.
I dont even believe you ever played the original arcade game anyway sure maybe the halfbreed N64 KI Gold or even the decent SNES version of KI 1 but Killer Instinct was a damn fun fighting game.
In fact some you haters like blissful up there can flame me all you want I dont give a fuck.
Killer Instinct kicked ass and was faaar ahead of its time when originally released in the arcades and if a NEW Killer Instinct were to be redesigned yet faithful to the arcade original for todays next-gen consoles and gameplay it SURE AS HELL would sell a LOT more than perfect dark or especially Viva-pinata.
Screw it ; Rare has turned out like Sega as a developer I agree with HeyBtbm in that most (if not all) of the great talent has already left Rare just like in Segas case and they are "but a shadow of thier former selves".
btw i guess the only way to post a thread around here at DP without getting fucking flamed nowadays is to post something like " THE WII IS GREAT" "the Nintendo DS RULLLLLEZZZZ"! or something along the lines of "NINTENDO IS STILL KING"!
RIGHT?
or is it more on par with Gamefaqs/Gamespot and Gametrailers forums that only want posts about HALORULLLEZZZ or GEARZOFWARRZZOOWNEZZZ! Cmon please tell me that good ol DP hasnt fallen THAT far?
oh and FLAME AWAY!

Rare owns the rights to Killer Instinct just as they do Banjo
Midway made the arcade cabs and distributed the game for Nintendo.
It is not "Nintendos baby" it is Rares.

either way, Rare knows that a new Killer Instinct is high in demand, there is now way thier market researchers skipped any of the demands for a new KI. The only thing is that they will probably want to wait until the timing is right to release any kind of games with the KI name on it. Timing is everything when it comes to companies releasing games. For instance, why would Squeenix make a FF7 remake now? they are making shit tons of cash off everything else right now. When/if thier profits get lower than usual, they pull out an ace like that to bring up thier sales again. We may not see a Killer Instinct this early in the new generation of systems, but we may see it towards the middle/end of the lifecycle, because that way they'll have tapped more system resources to be able to make a better game out of it as well. Just my 2 cents

What are you saying here? That the people that enjoyed the game when it came out wouldn't enjoy it now? That people "grown up" since then shouldn't be playing Banjo games?

What Rare and MSoft should do is port arcade Killer Instinct to XBLA with online play and see if there is still interest in the series...
But would Nintendo object?

I played KI when it was originally released in the US on arcade. I first played it on the SNES at the E3 in 1995. I messed around with KI2 in the arcade to see if it improved the forumula. It hadn't. I fairly recently played KI2 via MAME (using Saturn pads if you must know) at a recent Classic Gaming event. It was good for a laugh, then it was back to KOF99, 2003, SSF2T, Alpha 3, and SFIII:3rd.
Killer Instinct kicked ass and was faaar ahead of its time when originally released in the arcades....
Outside of the unique graphic approach, in what way was it "faaar ahead of its time"? Was it the charge "infinite" combo system? Was it... uh; Sabrewulf?
I found KI to be a totally shallow but admittedly flashy fighting game (ala Time Killers and Primal Rage... form over substance). Fights degenerated into who could memorize obtuse combos, pull them off first, and break them with a "combo breaker" by spamming it repeatedly until the game accepted it. To be perfectly fair, I practiced and got very good at the game with T.J. Combo just because everyone was impressed with 40+ hit combos at the arcade. But at no point did Killer Instinct slightly compete with the depth or accessibility of any of the many other quality fighting games out at the time.
I'd be also interested in hearing how Killer Instinct went on to influence any other fighting game worth noting.
To help jog your memory, KI came out shortly after Mortal Kombat II, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Darkstalkers, KOF 94, and Samurai Showdown II. Please use those as your jumping point.

i think what he's trying to say is that your average 360 owner only seems to be interested in games in which you "shoot stuff". I mean, look how Viva Pinata did........

KI was FUN for a LOT of ppl and gamers.

KI was fun mr serious gamer get over it.
I never stated that KI was BETTER than any of those games I was only trying to point out that there were still a lot of ppl that would enjoy a new KI THATS ALL.
and obviously your not one of them.
sorry if KI killed a family member or whatever the fuck happened that you feel so much hatred towards KI.:ass:

I would personally LOVE to see KI3 become a reality, but at this point there's no reason to think it will. I'll be pleased and surprised if it does though.
As to KI's quality, or lack thereof, I think it falls somewhere between the bottom dwellers of the fighting game eschalon - like Time Killers - and the top of the heap, like SF3 3rd Strike and Samurai Shodown 2. KI 1 and 2 did often degenerate into nothing more than a combo showcase, but it did have some additional depth if you knew what you were doing. I could often string together smaller combos with air juggles in between, which was decidedly different than the 80+ ultra combos that often finished off matches.
Regardless, if the game is fun it ultimately doesn't matter if it's as technically proficient and deep as other games in its genre. Fun is fun, and that's what videogames are all about (for me anyway).

I want to see KI on the XBLA , man that would be freakin sweet, I don't care about KI3.... 1 or the less popular ARCADE version of KI2, will be sufficient, but KI, on XBLA... man I hope I get to see that day... come on M$ and RARE.....
on another note I got to post my pics, I have the ROM running on my Laptop and I use the RGB cable on my 42' lcd tv to play the game, so its the next best thing... man thats sweeet!!!!

You constantly whine about people posting content like you would on Gamefaqs and then spout this garbage? I simply challenged you to back up your words defending an abysmal fighting game, and did it nicely to boot. You're the one who needs to re-evaluate your posting habits. You're insulting and banal; with no justification what so ever. I'd ask for an apology but I guess that would be too much to ask from someone like you.

As an XBox 360 gamer...I'm looking forward to a new Banjo game. One of the few shining spots of the N64 library. Would be fun to see that series updated.
Killer Instinct never did anything for me. Heck, I didn't even know they bothered with a #2.

Always cracks me up how quick people are to say 'Rare aren't what they used to be' ever since they left Nintendo. Sure Dinosaur Planet could have been better but as their last Nintendo game, I'm sure they were more than eager to wrap it up and start on Xbox hardware.
I for one LOVE Grabbed By The Ghoulies, didn't have much depth but it was fun to play and the audio and visual work had me and my flatmates in stitches.
Kameo and Perfect Dark 0 were good. Again maybe not what people wanted them to be.
Viva Pinata was brilliant as pointed out.
Sure not every game is as anticipated or consistantly as good as their games on N64 (That said many didn't like Blast Corps, Jet Force and DK) but anyone that has been a fan longer than that know that as well as making some of the best games in the 8-bit era, they also made some of the worst (Hello Taboo).
Expecting a 100% strike rate is unreasonable, fanboys from the N64 Golden(eye) age are expecting too much.
Me? If Banjo is any good, it will certainly add to my list of reasons to buy my very own 360 and I'm interested what else they will announce in the future.
As for Killer Instinct, people have been asking them about that in their mailbag for years.

Didn't most of the "good" people at Rare move on to Free Radical (which is now, ironically, owned by EA)?
Goddamn why don't they port the timesplitters games to PC?
