Now don't get me wrong this is crazy (to some), but I actualy had friends who liked Sonic 1 on my Master System better than SMW for their SNES.

Yes SMW is better graphically , but Sonic 1 for the Master System was just alot more fun to my friends.

And for the Master System the graphics, gameplay, and control were amazing.

This game was very rare in the US, but my mother found it and boy was I happy with my Master System, while others had moved to the SNES and Genesis, I had a 8 bit gem in my house.

And for the Genesis owners at the time, it was a different game and to many had more challenging gameplay.

Man this brings back memories and if you haven't played this game before, your missing on maybe one of the best 8 bit games ever made.

Was the username master_systemfan already taken?

And don't get me wrong, I'm a die-hard SMS fan as you will find, but you seem to be laying on the admiration a bit thick, methinks.

I consider myself to be a Sega fanboy but I think Sonic 1 SMS> SMW is pushing it a little bit too far.

S3&K>SMW, on the other hand... ;-)

NGPC Sonic > all Master System Sonics

And no, SMS Sonic isn't even close to the marvelous wonder that is SMW. And this is speaking from experience; I was there first time round (yes, I'm an old git).

I knew this was going to be crazy to alot of yall.

But its true, I had friends who actualy liked playing Sonic 1 on my SMS then SMW on there SNES.

I will never forget, this was 1991, and the last release for the Master System(US). Me being sad of the news, in a (EGM I think). My mother suprises me with Sonic and as I called my friends over to play, they were amazed (all ready very familar with the SMS hardware, and were saying they liked it better than SMW for there brand new SNES).

They never said the SMS was better than the SNES, (I wouldn't have said that), but its true that they did prefer Sonic 1 running on my Master System then SMW running on their Super Nintendo.

Its crazy to some, but true. (You also have to say that many of my friends wanted Master Systems bad), but there parents werent having that as they already owned Nintendo's.

None of them really said they had anything better than me, untill they got Super Nintendo's and even then like I said, they preferred my Sonic 1 , then there SMW pack in game.

Its true

But in someway it just wasn't fair when you walked in our doors, because our house was like a Sega Master System promotion room, we had so many games, and my mom could get them cheap she said. My family dug up anything you could find for the Master System, we had tons of games, so when people came to our house to play video games they got the full Master System experience, and it led many (alot of my friends), to actualy get upset that this system was not sitting in there homes.

Man those were the days.

I give SMW a lot of credit because it pretty much perfects the 2D platform genre. In fact, 15 years later it's still blows the recent NEW Super Mario Bros. (DS) completely out of the water (growing up with SMW I must say that I was very disappointed that 15 years later Nintendo had taken away things from the winning formula rather than adding anything).

I always did prefer Sonic on the Genesis when I was growing up. I didn't own the game or system, but loved playing it at my cousin's house. Perhaps your friends had similar experiences-- they thought Sonic was better because it was a unique experience to them after playing SMW (perhaps the same reason they preferred the SMS over the NES).

Now I'm slightly biased too because I prefer Sega over Nintendo. I also prefer the character of Sonic over Mario (and how can you not?). Sonic is probably the best platform game character ever created, and Mario is quite dull IMO. But when it comes to gameplay I have to give credit to SMW, despite my biased preference of the Sonic games for Genesis. Sonic's speed and personality was innovative for it's time and makes the game still fun today, but SMW is pure platforming at it's best and perhaps only rivaled by SMW2: Yoshi's Island as the best 2D platformer ever.

i was always a huge sega fan, always got the new consoles when they came out but saying sonic 1 is better than smw really IS pushing it jsut a tad too much, dont egt me wrong they are both great games, but smw just does it for me more, i dont know why

Super Mario World SNES >>>>>>>> Sonic the Hedgehog SMS

Super Mario World SNES = Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis

Ninja Golf > Super Mario World

Discussion over.

I'm a Sega fan all the way, but I'd never pick Sonic on the Master System over SMW. Shit, I'd pick SMB3 over Sonic on MS any day of the week.

Sonic 3+Knuckles is a far better comparison and one that in my eye would win over SMW.

Everybody has the right to there opinion.

Sonic for the Master System was amazing though, atleast we thought it was.

Sonic the Hedgehog is pale in compare to the Sega Genesis version. I buy Sonic the Hedgehog at release in June of 1991 and the summer of 91 is fill with Sonic excitement. I purchase SMS Sonic the Hedgehog in 1992 upon release (yes I have the "rare" barcode ^_^ ). Sonic the Hedgehog (as well as other Genesis games) are not port well to the SMS :( They are being great games but are not superior. I am respect what Sega is do with bringing Genesis hits on to the SMS in the 90's - big love for Sega ^_~

Yeah, I've never played the SMS version of Sonic so I can't say anything for sure, but I can not imagine it being better than the Genesis versions. Just doesn't make sense that a backwards port that had to have Genesis-elements stripped from it to perform right on the SMS, would somehow manage to be superior to the Genesis version. Credit to Sega for doing the port, but I just can't see it better being than the Genesis version except from the nostalgic viewpoint being presented by 8bitdude. But not by gameplay.

I thought Sonic on the MS and Sonic on the GG were the same game?

The overworld map was pretty cool, but I recall it playing a lot like the Sonic games on GG (minus the blur) and I'm not a big fan of the GG Sonic games.

Genesis Sonic > SMS Sonic

Now that's a bold statement!

That is bold considering I find SMW to be a SMB3 retread but with some minor tweaks and a fresh coat of paint. :p

WTF, maybe I should make my own "vs" thread. Next week, join in the exciting debate of Fighting Force 64 VS GTA3!!!! -_-

I'm all about gaming debates, but these topics are becoming laughable. SMW all the way, no contest.

Nah. Bold would have been eliminating the word "almost" from my statement.

I was taking into account the almost too. It's just when you span every system, dear god that's a lot of selection. My personal opinion, out of every game ever made SMW would barely scratch the top 100, if at all. Not saying it's a bad game because I'd consider it in the top 90% of must-owns for the SNES.

Not 100% the same game. The perspective (in terms of how much of the map can bee seen) is a little different, the bonus levels are completely different, and Jungle Zone act 2 on GG is no longer a masochist's wet dream. :-)

so 8bitdude what did you think of SMS Sonic 2 when it came out since you liked Sonic 1 so well. I've heard some like this Sonic 2 better than the Genesis ones.

8bitdude you were right you do sound crazy. SMS Sonic of Super Mario World seems wild to me. I'd even take SMW over Sonic for the Genesis. Now I would pick Sonic 3 or Sonic and Knuckles over SMW but not the original Sonic over SMW. But my opion may sound crazy or wild to other gamers as well.

j_factor
06-27-2007, 11:20 PM
Yeah, that is a little crazy. If you want to talk about SMS games being better than SNES games, I might say that the SMS version of Ghouls n' Ghosts is better than Super Ghouls n' Ghosts, or that the SMS version of Battletoads in Battlemaniacs is (strangely) better than the SNES version.

I wouldn't even put Sonic 1 in the top 5 SMS platformers.

I can't say I've ever played Sonic 1 for the Game Gear/ Master System, but if it is anything like Sonic 2, SMW has nothing to worry about. Rife with slowdown, cheap enemies, and limited viewing area, Sonic 2 was not worthy of its Genesis counterparts. I don't know why Sonic 1 was excluded from the Sonic Gems Collection, which would have been my only opportunity to play the game. Comparing Sonic 2 for the Genesis and SMW might be apt for a closer analysis.

Quoted for truth. Sonic 3 & Knuckles >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Any Mario game ever released
