View Full Version : PS2 gaming in South Korea

I'm in South Korea for a year+. Of course, I brought my PSX and my GC but I made the stupid mistake of shipping my Dreamcast and it has yet to arrive. So to get me over this little bump I bought a Korean PS2. I mean, nothing gets one through culture shock like the all American game, Final Fantasy X, right?

So anyway, not surprisingly, I've having a tough time finding other games in English (I speak/read neither Korean nor Japanese). Can anyone who knows something about PS2 imports give me a brief rundown of good games, that have NOT or will NOT be making it to the US, that I should grab while I'm over here (or when I visit Japan) even if they're not in English, especially if language doesn't seem to matter very much for the game.

Oh, and I'm asking as someone who plays games and not as someone who collects them. Hmm, that's funny, I typed e-n-g-l-i-s-h and it got changed to Engrish.

Thanks in advance

PS If you ever want your blonde haired blue eyed children to feel special, move them to S. Korea. Strangers are quite friendly to children here and most of them have never seen a child with blonde hair/blue eyes other than on television. We get surrounded by mini-skirted salesgirls who literally gasp and squeal (I mean it, they squeal, a cross between a stifiled scream and an "ooooo", I'm not kidding or exagerating) when they see my kids when we shop. It totally rocks, the mini skirts, I mean. Actually getting any shopping done can be a pain.

DoDonpatchi 3: April 10th
Metal Slug 3: April 15th

That is all you need and I strongly doubt either will be making the trip across the ocean.

cool! I already know metal slug 3 is great, and I'll definitely check out the other. Thanks!

You can think of those as investement titles if you wish. I really doubt DDP3 is going to sell in anywhere the numbers say Ikaruga did, and it's gonna be in demand, unless it turns out to really suck. (Cave is god, I don't think it will suck.)

These are the only 2 new releases I've been excited about probably since Iky came out. Never thought I'd need to import PS2 games, but there's a first time for everything.

BTW, if you're a 2D fighting/Neo Geo fan, you also might look for some of the King of Fighters Playmore has brought out over seas.

These, of course, are what I'd be looking for if I was over there. :)

I'm going to move this over to the gaming forum, so hopefully you'll get a few more replies! :)

Are you in Seoul? If you are, check out the huge flea market area between
the Dongdaemun Stadium and Sidang subway stops. I was there on a
business trip last week. and was finding classic stuff. One hole in the wall shop had modern stuff, bought a GBA multicart (3 GBA games, 33 GBC) for 40000W,
about $36 American. Don't remember PS2 stuff, but wasn't really looking either. I do remember seeing PS2 consoles.

Great! Thanks, I'd heard rumors of a big flea market somewhere but hadn't been able to pin it down to anywhere less vague than "Seoul". :)

Hmmm... I have blue eyes. Would I be able to get a big fat discount for having blue eyes? Maybe I should drop in someday. (after SARS crisis is over that is, Korea is too close to China)

Actually, when I shop by myself no one gives me a second glance or discounts and I've got blue eyes. (except for one lovely woman who was gazing at me as if I were something rare and exotic. I wasn't just imagining it either, I confirmed it with a third party) Now when I'm out with the kids, *they* are given all sorts of free sweets and little toys.

Oh, and looking at the SARS statistics this morning, Korea has no suspected cases or deaths and the US has 100 suspected and no deaths. 'Course, once it hits Korea - with 43 million people crammed into an area the size of New Jersey - well, one can only imagine how quickly it will get passed around.
