I hook mine up wired, but I have a friend who wants to go wireless. Do you have to buy the M$ brand adapter or does someone else make one that is not so over-priced?

You can use the original Xbox wireless adapter. That will save some flow

I use a third party adapter made by Linksys. It works perfectly fine, but wasn't much less than the cost of the Microsoft one at the time. Any 'wireless gaming adapter' or 'wireless gaming bridge' should work fine. If you look around, you should be able to find a Logitech PlayLink adapter set for under $20. Even though it doesn't use Wi-Fi directly (it hooks to a wired or wireless router and uses IR to connect to the end attached to the console), it works really well for the price -- my dad uses a pair to hook his XBox 360 to his network.

I use the official one for the 360, it is easy to set up and works perfectly, couldn't ask for anything more.

How's the range on the Microsoft wireless adapters? I've been thinking about getting one but my router and 360 are on different floors in the house. Will I still get a strong connection?

I use the official one too but it's a hell of a ripoff. I did get it used though, and with 10% off it was only $63. Before tax. What a fucking joke, but it does work without issue most of the time.
I have it connected to my HD-DVD drive though, and on rare occasions i'll have to unplug the adapter and plug it back in to get it to recognize the adapter. Only happens right when i turn the console on though, once it has a connection it doesn't drop it.

I have had that same issue the odd time as well as I have it connected through the HD-DVD add on. I agree with you on the price point, it is a tad bit pricey for what it is in all honesty.

Range is awesome. I have one connected to my 360 on the 4th floor and the wireless router is on the 1st.

If you check on Ebay you could get the official Xbox 360 Wireless adapter OEM for under $60 with shipping. It's savings and you don't need the fancy packaging. I got mine for $54.00 with shipping. Works fine for me.

I think it's really dumb that the didn't have a built in adapter for the Elite. That would have made me seriously consider getting an Elite. On a Major Nelson podcast, he explained that the reason they don't have built in wi-fi on the elite, is because the wi-fi standards are always changing and improving, and they don't want to lock out the 360 from new Wi-Fi technology. The way I understand it though, they could never have a Wireless N adapter thing for the 360, so I honestly don't know what the hell he's talking about. I've heard that the 360 will forever be G and A, and that they can't support N.

I think they actually recommend A when you first do your network settings. Some sort of message comes up like "A is recommended to prevent interference etc etc")
