I recently picked up a Sega Genesis/CD/32X bundle and have been bidding on games off of EBay to go with it.

Although I have a bank account linked to my PayPal account, I don't have much money in there right now (finished one job and starting another soon) so I've been paying by a credit card through PayPal.

Did'nt have any problems paying for my stuff so far -- even with international sellers -- until this auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3644&item=3015362303&rd=1

To be fair, I did'nt notice the fine print after the comment about PayPal and was'nt aware of it -- until he sent me a nasty e-mail. I was about THIS close to reporting him to EBay when I decided to just let the matter drop and sent the money again this time from my bank -- it's a low ammount, not like the Working Designs games I just won. :D

My question is -- what the heck is the difference HOW the money is sent to you through PayPal? You get the money right away in your account regardless if the person pays with a checking account or a credit card. Of course the card is valid or the money would'nt have been sent.

This is also the first time I've seen anyone with this strange request in their conditions.

Actually there is a difference... if you have the basic Paypal account you can't receive payment from people using their credit cards through it. You can only take payment from direct Paypal funds or debit cards. On the up side, Paypal get far less "cut" from doing it this way, hence you (as the seller) get more of the money sent to you.

I've been caught out by this a couple of times... and hence had to send cash US$ to people instead because I can't Paypal them...

It makes a BIG difference. Most big sellers don't care about the fee's, it's the fact that anyone who buys with a credit card can just do a chargeback 4 months later. Thus, a lot of people will ONLY accept transfers, that way you can't screw the sellers over. (Not you meaning YOU, just the bidder in general)

They can still screw you with paypal and funds transfer... all they have to do is tell paypal they never received the goods and paypal will reverse the transaction. It's happened to me a few times.

Exactly, the chargeback can still happen. And i've never heard of a 'basic' account before not taking credit cards -- that's new to me. First person in more then three years of using PayPal to pay for EBay winnings that has done this. Just thought it was strange.

I think the "basic" accounts just have a limit (something to the tune of $200?) that they can take the Credit Cards under.

There are two different types of Chargebacks, First there's the chargeback thru Paypal, this can only happen in the first 30 days, and if you have DC or tracking and you shipped to a confirmed address, then you are safe from chargbacks assuming you did actually send the items.

Then there are chargebacks thru the credit card companies themselves. Most CC companies will give you 90 days or so from purchase date to file fraud, if some one paid thru paypal, with their credit card, they could use the credit card company to file a chargeback against you long after the paypal time has expired. I believe that is the chargeback Sylentwulf is referring to.

SoulBlazer, I'm surprised you haven't seen an auction like this before, I see these all the time, of course I've bought alot more stuff thru ebay than you. ;) But most of the time, the reason for the non-credit card payments thru Paypal, is for the difference in fees. The fee structure that Paypal charges is different depending on how people pay you. There's a flat rate, plus a percentage. And the percentage rate goes up if the buyer uses a CC. So sellers sometimes state no credit card payments thru Paypal to keep the Paypal fees to a minimum.

I don't know the difference between the Basic accounts versus the Premier. I stepped up about 3 years ago, right before Paypal & X-com merged. Use to be Paypal was totally FREE! Limited to $500 funds acceptance per month, then it dropped a couple times to around $100 per month, and it was just a pain to not be able to accept payments, so I upgraded. I'm sure Basic accounts still have limits, but there may also be a no credit card payment rule in effect as well. But the majority of the seller's I've run into do this because of the difference in fees.

The basic PayPal accounts can't take ANY credit cards at all unless you do a upgrade to the next level of account.

I know this becuase I had to do the upgrade last month.

At least three times I've given paypal the tracking # and still been reversed. And it's not like there is any recourse or way to contact Paypal. They have NO customer service.
