It's only one of the best adventure games ever, made by LucasArts in a time when they were making one amazing adventure game after another.
So no, it's not any good. It's fucking fantastic.

Yes - It's a great game! The games sense of humor makes it all the more fun.
I have only 2 DOS games, in my collection I actually still play regularly: Sam & Max is one. MDK is the other.

As Mobius has stated: Sam and Max Hit The Road is definately one of the
best adventure games ever made. This titles hardcore fanbase is the single
most important reason behind Telltale Games' new Sam and Max series.
If you haven't played the original do so. If you haven't seen TTG's Sam
and Max stuff then play that too.
The stories are very well written and the comical atmosphere of it all
will keep you laughing the whole time. On another note, check out
this website: http://www.maxforpresident.org/
In short: You have NO IDEA what kind of greatness you are missing. :)

It is also worth mentioning that you can play the game on pretty much every device these days if you use ScummVM.

I'm playing Episode 1 of Sam & Max right now and it has completely surprised the hell out of me so far. I honestly didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I am right now, but it's totally bringing back the same feelings that I got deep in my loins back when I first played Sam & Max on my 486.

Sam & Max is definitely a well made game. The storyline and humor is all top notch as are the really nice hand-drawn graphics. I don't think you can just say that anyone will enjoy it, though. I ended up finding it really boring. It's just not a gameplay style that I could get into.
I would certainly recommned that the original poster try the game out for himself and see if he likes it, but for someone who isn't familiar with PC style adventure games, it may or may not be that much fun. These Lucas Arts games are based on a particularly slow and undirected form of gameplay totally unlike most console games. It's in fact just as much unlike turn-based console RPGs as action/arcade style games.
Even if Sam'n'Max Hit The Road doesn't catch you, I would recommend also checking out Beneath A Steel Sky. It's a similar point & click style adventure game, but I found it more immersive than Sam'n'Max myself. I never managed to finish it, either, though. I think I'd like to try out Grim Fandango next since people really seem to rave about that one, too.
I really want to like this style of game since I can tell they're so high quality and I like the stories, but the gameplay always just leaves me cold.

Considering you get 'em all with a GameTap subscription (along with about 900 other games) and the first month of GameTap is only $1, downloading 'em off of a torrent would make you... a complete fuckwad.
and yes, they are very good. I'm on the first episode right now and loving it; everyone says that they keep getting better and better throughout the season.

Well the only reason I need to download them by mininova is that Gametap is not available in Puerto Rico if not I would get it. Gametap has tons of good games!!

You can still buy them separate of GameTap. I recommend ordering directly from TellTale (http://www.telltalegames.com/store/samandmax-season1-disc), as it's only $35 + shipping, you can download and play the games right now anyway, it comes with a ton of bonus stuff, etc.
You can also buy them on Steam, but then it's $9/episode. :(

I remember when i bought a Lucas Arts collection which contained the CD-ROM version of Sam & Max Hit the Road, Days of the Tentacle and Indiana Jones - The Fate of Atlantis back somewhere aroun 1996 - 1998. I remember it was a thrusday and that i bought it rather late in the evning so i didnt get to play much that day. The next day at school wasnt easy, i just wanted to rush home and play Sam & Max Hit the Road :) Its one hell of an adventure game, highly recommended!
Its amazing that so many adventure games back in the days were so good. Like the pack i bought, all those 3 games are so damn excellent.
EDIT: Fixed typo.

Some great quotes....
Max: Why don't I get an inventory?
Sam: Where would you keep it?
Max: That's none of your damn business, Sam.
Sam: It doesn't look much like a frog.
Max: My innocence has been shattered by this blatant tourist trap. I want my money back.
Sam: We didn't pay anything.
Max: Well, somebody better give me some money.
Sam: Cash never leave home without it
Max: Yeah we may need it to bribe slippery government officials

Sam & Max is definitly one of the best point-and-click adventure games ever made. it's involving and there's plenty of humor to keep the player entertained to no end.
