This has finally hit the shops in the UK after taking what seems like 2 years in production. I haven't got my copy yet, but it's apparently 250 pages, costing £10. I'm guessing that it'll eventually reach the US stores sometime soon. I'll try & post a picture of the cover as soon as I get my copy. :)

I'm sure this'll be no better than all those other 'Top X' lists. I'm wondering what'll be at No.1. When I stopped reading Edge, only 3 games had received a 10/10: Mario 64, Zelda: OoT and Halo.

Nice cover. That's Army of Trolls pixel art isn't it ?

If you want to be spoiled, the top 10 listed are...

1.Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of time
2.Resident Evil 4
3.Super Mario 64
4.Half Life 2
5.Super Mario World
6.Zelda:A Link to the Past
7.Halo:Combat Evolved
8.Final Fantasy XII
9.Tetris
10.Super Metroid

A bit of a change since they last did it in 2000... my only real surprises is that #2 is at #2 (though I'd say it might be just about considered top 10) and #8 completely (to which I say WTF, because it's an average game imo).

Yeah, I got a problem with No.2 as well. Sure, it's a great game, but in another 10 years would it be ranked in the top 10 of all freaking time? hell no. And No.8 doesn't belong in the top 10 either. That's just there to appease the millions of fanboys.

If it had been, oh say the entry rhyming with "weetabix" then I may not have an issue. But that one? Yeah indeed... I think Edge were the only place to rate it highly...

Egads, that top ten sucks.

Half Life 2 is above Halo, that's all that really matters. :)

(HL2 is one of my favorite games ever and is my favorite FPS overall. ever.)

Personally I have no real issues with the other 8 in the list, though maybe change the order somewhat, maybe swop Halo for something else. What sucks about it in your eyes?

Halo shouldnt be in the top ten of any legit list but of course most of the time it is.

I pretty much agree with the rest of the top ten.

I have a bad feeling about this release. I really have loved the re-prints and specials but it does seem to be appealing to the masses. Nothing wrong with that but it just doesn't give justice to all of those nice sleepers and long-lost classics that just kicked ass eatting quarters at the arcades.

... I'll still buy it though.

Totally agree too. There are many FPS games I've enjoyed over the years and Halo always seemed just ordinary.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but Edge's Top 100 list was compiled from readers' votes. Which pretty much explains those top ten games, which are all current big-selling franchises.

These sort of things are a bit of fun, because they always spark the "who's best" arguments, and it's pretty easy to join in. So I don't think too much about this newest one. I remember when Next Gen had their first Top 100 issue back in '96 or so, and it was packed with the full history of videogames, instead of simply the most recent sellers. I think the top spots included Super Bomberman 2, Civilization, Sentinel, Robotron, Micro Machines, Virtua Racing, Street Fighter 2, and of course Mario and Zelda and Tetris. Heck, they even threw in a couple Infocom text adventures just for kicks.

If I want to read a "best games ever" list, I want something like that, something a little more diverse, something that makes me want to pull out the older games just to see what the fuss is about. The newest Edge issue? A nice publicity stunt, and should sell some magazines. That's really what it's all about.

Has anyone ever compiled all the various best-of lists from the various magazines? It'd be interesting to see how things stack up.

I do remember that original Next-Gen Top 100; that was the only magazine Top X list to this day that I can endorse. Someday I'd like to see another one as well-written as that. As an aside, I think a lot of people get hung up about the ranking, so perhaps just having 100 games listed in chronological or alphabetical order would be better.

That top 10 sucks. I wonder if the other 90 are as lame.

I just found that copy of Next Gen in a pile of old magazines recently. While I agree for the most part that it was one of the better lists, they did make Super Mario 64 their #1 - in the same issue where they reviewed it for the first time. Super Mario 64 still ranks very high on most lists, but to name a new game just coming out the best game ever seemed at the time to be a little premature.

Half Life 2 and Final Fantasy 12 are probly 2 great games, but do they deserve to be within the top 10 of the greatest games of ALL time?

Monkey Island is on 78 and Doom 2 on 79. Its madness i tell you! LOL Hehe, seriously tho, different opinions :)

What sucks about it in your eyes?

The fact that virtually every game on it is from the last ten years for starters. If you're going to base the list on the impact the games on it had, then there are many older titles that deserve to be there. Heck, even if it's based on popularity it's questionable, as Halo 2 sold more, didn't it?

... and the lack of Sega love on that list sickens me. :p

Who is going to compile the Top 100 Top XX Lists Evar?

Well, at the time, Mario 64 really was the best thing ever. But, yeah, a bit soon? Perhaps.

Say, why don't you type out the Top 100 list for the rest of us? I don't remember a lot of it; I'm curious to see what I'd think of it now. Pretty please.

I don't know about Final Fantasy 12 since I haven't played it yet, but Half Life 2 absolutely deserves to be up there. I had typed up a bunch of text to follow this, but then I realized that being a Top X List Thread that no one really cared anyway...so...

Yea, it's one of the 10 best games ever made and I don't think any currently existing companies out there are capable of making a better first person shooter (except perhaps Monolith, but they always seem to get the short end of the stick at some point). What's worse is that Valve raised the bar higher with Episode 1 and all indications point to them jacking it up yet more notches with Episode 2.
