Ok so the local game store has a turbo grafx 16 for $29.99. No games, just the system and I'm assuming cables and controller.
I want to eventually play Rondo of Blood on turboduo/turbo cd. What kinds of region protection will I come across with a North American Turbografx, Turbo CD add-on, and a jap copy of Rondo? What is the best route for me to take here? Just spring for a japanese pcengine CD system on ebay? Or buy this TG16 right here right now, and fish for cd add on later?

Turbo CD games don't have any region protection on em, so for Rondo it doesn't matter as long as you have the CD drive and the super system card. Of course US CD systems are a bit pricey, and you would still need that system card. Another option is to pay out for a US or Japanese Duo system, with the CD drive and the super system card built in.

You might be better of getting a US Turbo Duo and buying a copy of Dracula X. Getting not only a working TG-16 CD add on but also a Super System card will set you back quite a bit.
I will say this…Dracula X is good but not to the extent of what most people ask for it…I’d be happy with just Symphony of the Night myself…Having to purchase a Turbo Duo/PC engine Duo and a copy of the game is not really worth the hundreds of dollars required in my opinion.

Agreed. You should skip the allure of the cheap TG16 and invest in a Duo. By the time you find and buy that expensive US Super System Card and drum up a TG16 CD add-on, you're going to end up spending the same amount as you would buying a Duo. The Duo is smaller too, which can be a plus depending on your taste, The TG16 w/CD is a monster.
It might even be a better idea to get a Japanese Duo. Japanese HuCards are cheaper and more plentiful (via eBay) than US games, and most of the best titles don't need to be in English. It will play US CD games, so you can get all the good RPGs. It is a win-win situation really.
Drac X is realy only worth it now if you NEED to play it on the TV or don't have a PSP. Or, of course, if you collect. That said, I must say that, all these years later, I am still happy I spent the $110 to experience it on its native hardware. Its a great game.

Yeah, get yourself a nice sexy Duo-R or RX. You'll have access to all those Hu cards without messing around with an adapter.

I'm not one to promote piracy, but if you just want to play it, you could get a Duo, (Try for a Duo-R, original Duos are plagued with sound problems) and download a Dracula X ISO and play the CD-R. Or, just use an emulator to get a taste of it before you decide to drop $130.00 on that game.
By the way, $30.00 for a TG-16 is pretty damn good. I'd get it regardless of playing Drac X on it or not.

Man, there are two topics that come up CONSTANTLY on forums that allow piracy / emulation speak: "how do i emulate NiGHTS" and "why isn'y my dracula x burn working".
If you DO decide to pirate, GET A BIN/CUE, DO NOT MESS WITH AN ISO/MP3.

I'm a castlevania collector so dropping $100+ on Chi No Rondo is inevitable.

I feel Rondo is worth the price it hits on ebay, easily. It's short enough to quickly play, over and over, and it is so solid that you will want to keep playing it.
Radiant Silvergun is another expensive one that people say "isn't worth it" but is soooo good :)

TG16 can be region modded so you can use jpn hucards.
Not to mention the jpn 3.0 super system card... is more common and cheap compare to the u.s one.
Still it's more convenient to get a duo-r or rx since it has the, 3.0 bulit in and your all ready for any scd game.
Btw as mention in this thread all ready avoid the turbo duo or pce. Since they have those damn sound issue problems.

A Duo-R, modded with s-video and region switch (for hucards) is the best way to go, IMO.

Seconded with an extreme burning vengeance. This goes for pretty much any game really, but especially Chi no Rondo and Snatcher since the most commonly available ISO+MP3s of both are borked up the wazzoo.
I'll gladly rip a BIN/CUE or CCD/IMG of either for anyone if it means saving them from ISO+MP3 hell.
If you're a die hard Castlevania fan, go ahead and drop the money to but it. Otherwise emulate, or buy it when it hits the PSP.

Mine does. I think it's just cheap parts. The connections gets loose really easy.
How come no one has mentioned the Super Grafx + Super CD-ROM 2 combo...? :)

As has been mentioned, it's being released in on PSP. It's going to include the original TG16 version, an upgraded 3D version and also symphony of the night as well.
I'd just go that route unless you're otherwise interested in becoming a tg16/duo collector.

Yes, lots. I bought an otherwise mint Turbo Duo and had to replace the laser immediately. It stopped playing CD audio after about 3 hours. Luckilly, the new laser and some adjustments of the potentiometer fixed that right up.
A lot of people have problems with dead capacitors that cause the audio to fade in and out or just die completely, too. That one takes some soldering to fix.

It's believed that part of the Turbo Duo's CD audio failure is caused by overheating over time. I think the guy at multimods used to offer a heatsink mod for that.
