In 1997 I remember the 64 was released in stores on the 1st of March. We had preordered it and went to Toys R Us as soon as it opened to get it. It cost $400 AUD for the consoles and ~$100 for Super Mario 64.
I can't remember the exact release dates except for the 3 launch titles but I think these are the other games I played in 1997:
Pilotwings 64
Wave Race 64
Shadows of the Empire
Golden Eye
Cruisin USA
Starfox 64 - Lylat Wars
Super Mario Kart 64
Since the 64 was just coming out I don't remember playing anything else although I did have a Super NES and PlayStation at the time. Does anyone else remember what games they were playing 10 years ago?

The N64 came out in USA on 9/29/96. I didn't get the N64 until almost a year later, waiting for the price to drop. I was a college freshmen when the N64 debuted, but everybody my age had moved on from Genesis to Playstation as the "It" systems. I would free load in their dorm rooms and use their PS1's, although most of the games were also available on PC. But for the most part, I continued to play SNES because I felt all the PS1 games were terrible. The PC games I played the most were Star Wars games X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and then Xwing vs. Tie Fighter, and Dark Forces and DF II: Jedi Knight when it came out. Also played the Need for speed games on PC (II was out then). In general, I spent the most time playing the Papyrus NASCAR Racing 1 and 2, and Indycar Racing 2 (aka Cart Racing).

10 years ago I was playing pretty much the same games as I do now: Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Defender, ect. I didn't have nearly as many systems back then though so it would've been just the 2600, 5200, INTV, Colecovision and NES. I had no games for the TI99/4A and had lost my original Fairchild by then.

It took some serious digging through my memories, but I'm pretty sure I was playing StarFox 64. Actually, I must have been. I got it for my birthday in July '97. It's been 10 years already!?
Hell, I think I had a Tamagotchi then, too.

I was mainly playing Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster & The Beanstalk (A Point-N-Click adventure game for PC, based on Tiny Toon Adventures). I also played a demo of Mario Kart 64 at a Toys 'R' Us around this time (Didn't get my N64 until November, and Diddy Kong Racing until January 1998)

10 years ago ... let's see. My wife and I had moved to Spokane, Washington by then and we were pretty lonely. I remember us playing a lot of Tetris Attack on the SNES and lots of PSX: Tomb Raider, Madden, and Crash Bandicoot, IIRC.

Wow, has it really been 10 years?
In March '97, The N64 was released in Europe, and I was being wowed by Super Mario 64, Pilotwings 64, Turok, Wave Race 64 and Star Wars - Shadow of the Empire. Those games at the time were like nothing we'd ever seen before... simply awe inspiring...then in late '97 Goldeneye was released... nuff said about that one really. It single handedly ignited the FPS genre on consoles.
I also was still playing the living hell out of one of my favourite games of all time: NiGHTS Into Dreams. That game was sheer poetry in motion.
I also had recently upgraded my PC for the first time ever, just to play Quake 2 and Carmageddon. Boy, was that worth the money. Quake 2 is still one of my favourite games, and Carmageddon was a helluvalot of fun when it first came out.
Wipeout 2097 / XL had just been released, along with Bushido Blade, and I loved both of those on my PS1.
...And of course, I was still playing my regular staples in my videogame diet - Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally, Super Street Fighter II, Dayeetooooonaaaa, Doom, and Tempest X3

Hmm... 10 years ago would've been the summer before my senior year of high school, so actually I wasn't playing a whole lot of anything. That was after my Genesis started acting up and before I got my Playstation or started my personal NES renaissance. So, if anything, at the time I would've been playing Tecmo Super Bowl III and NHL 96 on the Genny, Mario Kart and Sim City on the SNES.
Actually, the reality was that I was more often playing Magic: the Gathering along with the occasional D&D game, plus summer football stuff.
Edit: And for the depressing record, my first thought when you said "10 years ago" was, "Oh, 1992, I was playing Tecmo Super Bowl like crazy." Not quite... :(

Let's see, I had probably 1/40th of the number of games I have now, and only 3 systems at that.
NES:
SMB3
Mega Man 1-5
G.I. Joe
Castlevania
Contra
Golgo 13
Metroid
Bionic Commando
SNES:
SMW
Super Metroid
Super Star Wars
Super Mario All-Stars
Super Empire Strikes Back
Super Return of the Jedi
Star Trek: The Next Generation
My memory suggests that I was playing the SNES more at the time.
Edit: I also had Atari at the time... plenty of games, but I can't recall playing them a lot.

I only had an SNES back then, the same one I own today. I was 14 back then. I didn't do as much gaming as I do now, but I know I played through Super Mario RPG and Secret of Evermore at some point in 1997, along with completing Yoshi's Island I was in true "late to the party" fashion even back then). I also remember playing F-Zero and NBA Live' 96 a lot, and Super Mario 64 whenever I was lucky enough to be at the house of someone who owned an N64.

Zelda - NES
Sim City 2000 - SNES
Mechsomething - SNES
FFVII - PS
BoF 3 - PS
Transformers - PS
Wipeout & XL - PS
Descent - PS
Tomb Raider - PS
Street Fighter: The Movie - PS
Resident Evil - PS
Command & Conquer: Red Alert - PS
With some more thought I could come up with 10 more.

I was playing N64 mostly. N64 was actually the first console I bought with me own money. I spent the whole summer making money to buy a 64 on launch day. I was 12 and had my mom pick it up at Toy's R US while I was in school. That was back when you didn't have to camp out for weeks to get a new videogame system.
Spent a shit load of time with that system.
Other than the 64 I had a Saturn that I got too for dirt cheap because the system was starting to tank bad beacuse of Playstation. I might of had a playstation too, don't remember.
64 got the most play 10 years ago from me and right now i've been revisting it with games I missed orq games I wanted to play again. Great system, still enjoying it.
From what the actually games I where playing, this is all I can remember.
SNES:
Donkey Kong Country
Mario Kart
Sunset Riders
64:
Mario 64
Pilotwings 64
Goldeneye
Turok
Wcw/nwo World Tour
Crusin USA
Star Wars SOTE
Saturn:
Virtua Fighter1 and 2
Virtua Cop
Scorcher
Die Hard Arcade
Fighters Megamix
Fighting Vipers
Playstation:
Parappa the Rapper
Jet Moto games
Tail of the sun
Pro Wrestling

I didn't have a Playstation yet or an N64, so I was pretty focused on Saturn. I mainly played:
Street Fighter Collection
Fighters Megamix
Die Hard Arcade
Lunacy
Saturn Bomberman
Dragon Force
Sonic Jam
Sonic R
Croc
Last Bronx
Quake
Duke Nukem 3D
Shining the Holy Ark
Winter Heat
Enemy Zero
Sega Ages vol. 1
The Lost World (genesis)
Harvest Moon (snes)
James Bond 007 (game boy)
The Lost World (game gear)
I also went to the arcade on a semi-regular basis back then, playing games like Street Fighter III: New Generation and House of the Dead. Good times.

Ahhhh....the memories. Anyways 10 years ago I was playing my games like Mario 64, Starfox 64, and drooling over the pictures of Goldeneye in my Nintendo Power magazine. I believe Goldeneye came out in late Aug 1997. Playstation also took up some of my time with games like Final Fantasy 7, and Wild Arms.
I remember it like it was yesterday...wait, was it? no...no, it was 10 years ago. I would sequester my self for hours in my room, studying the likes of SNES classics such as Street Fighter II, Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, Mario's Time Machine. If I can recall correctly, I made the move to N64 that year as well. I only owned Mario 64, which didn't change until almost 2 years after, but somehow I didn't notice. It was just that good. Yes those were the days, that was the year - 1997.

The only things at my disposal were the Game Gear, Sega Master System and PC. This was around the time I began to venture into emulation on the PC and used a free internet provider to get on. I wish I could recall that providers name! I guess it's a shame because there weren't many out there at the time. But anyways, the list:
PC:
Warcraft
Warcraft 2 and Beyond the Dark Portal
Duke Nukem 3D
Doom 1 and 2
Descent
Heretic
GG:
Shinobi 1 and 2
Zoop
Desert Strike
... and some others I can't remember but it was around this time that I lost my first Game Gear and would be another 7 years before I bought a replacement.
SMS:
Nothing. It was stashed away and rarely came out. We only owned a few games since the early 90's.

PC games.
Most likely various user created maps Duke 3D.
Same here. Used to tie up the home phone line for hours on end playing against other people in the neighborhood. I remember buying a disc for Duke that had a ton of user created maps on it, most were absolutley horribly layed out, but there were a few gems on it.
Also played a lot of Command & Conquer, Warcraft, Interstate '76, and Dark Sun Shattered Lands (a fantastic game, can't recommend it enough even though it was released in '93).

I was playing all 3 YS games on TCD.
10 years ago, I got myself a new computer (Pentium MMX, 200MHz) and a few computer games. I had been playing on PCs for years before that, so I was looking forward to playing the latest and greatest games on my new killer machine. Turned out that most of the games didn't really interest me and I soon went the emulation route

I did buy a disc of Doom levels back in '95-96. I spent most of my summer playing a ton of Doom levels.
Duke3D levels I downloaded off the net and I do recall them having varying levels of quality. Usually a level with shitty use of textures was a giveaway along with horrible layout. Excessive enemy placement was always a warning to crap level. I remember a level on Dukeworld called "Moonbase" or "Moonbase2" that was really fun to play and would have been an utter blast to play multiplayer. I had yet to discover that map on the one and only time I ever played Duke multi-player.

Those were done around 2000. I quickly read a few things about the "internet boom" and what companies were going and most occured after Fall 1999 when NetZero was becomming big. We use to have AOL in the early and mid 90's but my dad stopped their service and I found other means to get online over dial-up, at one point using a friends ISP under his parents account. Oh well.

I didn't get an N64 until they were, I think, $99 and came with the extra purple controller, but I know it was after Wrestlemania 2000 came out so it was at least 1999. Good times, good times.

The latest console I had at this time of the year 10 years ago was the N64. I had gotten it in June, but I was still deep into Mario Kart 64, the only N64 game I owned until the end of August. I also rented a bunch of games. My favorite was Star Fox 64. I couldn't get enough of it. It wasn't until Christmas that I would get it. All my older systems must've remained unused until maybe the middle of August because I was so into the N64 it was ridiculous.
I played an in-store demo of Mario Kart 64 at The Wiz shortly after that game came out, and I was not the same after I played it. It was all I thought about until I got the system and the game. It was the greatest thing ever.
I then got FIFA 64 for my birthday at the end of August. It was a very cool game for the time. I also got Diddy Kong Racing the day it came out. I almost didn't get it the day it came out despite having it preordered. My parents didn't want to drive to Toys R Us. But they did, and I was so happy! And as I mentioned earlier, I got Star Fox 64 for Christmas.
I got Zelda 1 in November 1997. It was my first Zelda game. Unfortunately, I was playing it as my parents were telling me that we were going to move :( The overworld theme was looping as I cried. It's always a little sad to play the game because of that day.
September brought Stunt Race FX. It was awesome.
I might have gotten Star Fox for the SNES over the summer, but I forget. I do remember I got it on clearance for super cheap.
I think I got Mick and Mack as the Global Gladiators on the Genesis in 1997, but it's so hard to remember.
One thing I'm sure about is that I didn't get Super Mario 64 until 1998. I rented it over the summer of 1997, but it wasn't until it became a player's choice title that I got it.
As for arcades, I went to Keansburg Amusement Park a lot that summer. I played the usual stuff. Virtua Fighter 1 and 2, Galaga, Stargate Pinball, that ridiculous Time Warner Games Hoop It Up basketball game, Simpsons, etc.

After my disillusionment with Sega, I got into computer games, and was still playing them 10 years ago. 1997... I would have still been into DOOM 2 edited maps, but my current games were probably:
Quake
NASCAR 2
Star Control 3
Ultima 8
NHL 97
The first 4 were disappointing sequels. Their predecessors were some of the best games I ever played though. NHL 97 was fun, but had an annoying controller glitch. Really I think around this time my enjoyment of computer games was heading downhill.
I think 1997 is also when I upgraded to a Cyrix 6x86 133MHz "P166+" system. That was a relief - my old 486 was horribly unstable and only after getting the Cyrix did I finally get to go back and finish Ultima 7 - a game I had started on a 386.
A friend at school raved about Ultima Online, but I thought having to pay monthly fees was crap, so I wouldn't consider it.

Sept 7, 1997…Final Fantasy VII…
Man, that game was like heroin. I played that game until I destroyed it…my girlfriend (soon to be my wife in Feb 1998) about had it with me playing it constantly.
Other than that, I was just starting to get back into older games. I still had my SNES so I was re-renting games like Super Metroid, Zelda LttP and others that I had not played for a few years. Some time around then I bought a NES as I had not owned one at that point for years…that started the ball rolling and it’s been downhill ever since.

In 1997 I wasn't playing much :( This point of my life was spent chasing tail and building my car collection.
But I did find time to play a few games.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
I played the game several times all the way through. I didn't play too much else and I could not grasp 3D gaming for a very long time.
I also messed around with Suikoden but RPG's in 1997 were something I didn't find time for :embarrassed:
I didn't get back into gaming full swing until 1999 with Gran Turismo 2 (December)and the Sega Saturn which I bought on a whim in the fall 0f 1999.

Well, let's see, it would be a process of elimination for me. I didn't get a PlayStation until 1999 and I didn't get into buying older used game until roughly around the same time, so in 1997, all I had was my SNES, Game Boy, and the N64 I bought at launch (the only system I ever did that with).
I got Super Mario 64 as soon as it was out, but I wouldn't be surprised if I was still playing it in 1997. Very shortly after that, I also bought Cruis'n USA and Pilotwings 64, which I might've also still been playing in 1997. After those followed Killer Instinct Gold and Mario Kart 64. I'm kinda drawing a blank with what I bought after that, maybe Quest 64 (but maybe that's getting into 1998?), but all I know is that I dropped a load of cash back then. o_O I bought more games at launch during that period than any other in my life. I pre-ordered almost all of them, even though it was kinda pointless. I'm sure I went through at least a few hundred dollars, spending $60-$70 a pop.
Other than N64, I believe Donkey Kong Country 3 came out in November 1996, and I didn't get it until Christmas so I'm sure I was playing that in 1997. I was always replaying older games too, so I probably was playing some other stuff.
On Game Boy, who knows, maybe Castlevania Legends? Or was that 1998? I was probably just replaying more old stuff.

Spring and summer of 97 I had just gotten my PSX, and Resident Evil was getting a LOT of playing time. By fall I was in college and was alternating between NCAA Football 98 and lots and lots of Twisted Metal 2 deathmatches with my dormmates.
