This might be an odd subject of discussion, but after posting in the SMB3 thread, it brought be memories.
Has anyone ever had their parent(s) beat a video game before you did? When I got my first NES, I played SMB1 non-stop. I thought it was the hardest game ever created. No one in their right mind could beat this game.
After a few months, my dad was playing the NES when I came home, and he's telling me that he just beat SMB! WHAT!!!! Are you serious? I'm the big gaming nerd of the family, and I couldn't beat the game. And the big kick in the nards? He was able to do the Koopa-stomp 1up trick, and to this day I still can't do it.
Man, I'm starting to bring back repressed memories... I should stop now... ;-)

ha! My dad loved to play SMB1 too, although he wasn't as kick ass as your dad at it. But he did waste half a day of his life playing and beating all 90 or so levels in Lode Runner. Even to this day I hate that game.

My father was the only parent who played video games, and his most recent console was the Atari. He also played PC games. He was pretty good at Dig Dug and Berzerk, but I wasn't at all. I think I mentioned somewhere else that even back then, I liked games that had an achievable ending.

I love my mom, but sweet tapdancing christ, does she suck at video games. The only games she could reach a remote level of competency were Dr. Mario and Dig Dug II on the NES.

My mom was pretty good at mrs. pac-man and would play it regularly on the genesis and snes version. Also she would play dr. mario and tetris on the gameboy quite often. So as a kid she was a bit better than me but I think I have retained the skill more than she has, so I think it is about time I challenge her to a match next time I'm back to visit her.

Well my dad never beat any games... he did throw our Nintendo over the backyard fence once, though. Does that count?

It never happened to me. My parents don't play games very often.

My mom used to kick my butt routinely at various and sundry Odyssey2 games. She was the first person I ever saw beat Alien Invaders Plus!, and she'd cackle gleefully when the crablike mothership thingy would descend to the bottom of the screen to try to get her because she could knock it out of the sky without a second thought.
She was also fully capable of kicking large quantities of ass at Ms. Pac-Man in the arcade. It's taken me 25 years of practice to even get close to how she used to play.

All the time!
Back in the day, not too long after my family got their first game console (a NES), my mom learned about the wonders of gaming. She especially liked to play RPGs (and still does in fact, if you count WoW as an RPG ;)) and generally finished all of them before I ever had a chance to. This includes all of the Dragon Warrior games, Final Fantasy, Wizardry(!), Tombs and Treasure, and plenty of others that I don't remember. This continued into the days of the SNES, where she spent way too much time with Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger. She even beat all of the Phantasy Stars, Sword of Vermillion and Might and Magic II on the Genesis.
As for my dad, he mostly played sports games. However, he did manage to beat the original Wizards and Warriors, and I remember him renting Actraiser for me, sitting down to try it for 'just a few minutes', and then proceeding to spend the next few days playing it all the way through. I never did get to play that one until I got him to rent it again a few months later...

My mom used to get obsessed by a single game for a year or more at a time. She beat SMB1 before me, and to this day is practically genius level on Tetris and Dr. Mario, and probably some others that I'm forgetting.

My dad beat me on various electronic forms of chess... does that count? Sadly, when I started beating him regularly, he stopped playing against me.

My father was able to beat Punch Out, Commando, Kung Fu, and get all sorts of records on Track & Field (all on the NES) when I was younger. He did all this without cheating. I now can beat Kung Fu with ease, but the other games he beat and the records he achieved still are WAY out of my reach.

When I was about 8, my dad could kick my ass at Donkey Kong and Defender.
But my, how time changes things! :)

Yup. My dad could beat me at just about any drinking game until I went to college. Only there would I receive the patience, training and practice needed to come back and show him who's boss.
I can take him any day of the week now

To this day, I have never been able to beat my mom's scores at River Raid (2600) or Tetris (Gameboy). Those are about the only two video games I remember her playing, too.

Dude, I know exactly how you feel, my dad hasn't played games in years but he still can do that damn stomp trick and I can't, it really grinds my gears

When I was a kid, my dad always told me that my uncle (his brother), Bill could beat the original Super Mario Bros. Back then, I thought that was impossible so I never really believed it.
I think I could out-do him now, though 8-)

My mom used to play NES everyday when I was still going to preschool/kindergarten. She beat Super Mario Bros. 1 & 2 before I did and played Dr. Mario religiously.

One christmas I recieved Shadowrun for the Genesis. However, the game only had two save slots which were immediately stolen by my brother and my dad. I was so annoyed, he told me that he wanted to play the game together with me, which was bullshit. He just wanted to play it! I finally complained so much that he bought me a second copy of the game, but we only owned one system so of course he finished before me. XD

Never happened but I'll tell you that both of my parents can kick my ass at Burgertime. My dad beats my ass at Galaga. My dad and I used to play NES MT Punchout together. We would figure out how to beat each guy and there were quite a few of them who he beat before I did. Those were good times. He would actually stay up a little late and keep playing after I went to bed.

My dad used to be the man with Duck Hunt, but that fucking dog would get to me so hard. Musta went through like 4 lightguns because of that, the whole being young and irritated getting the best of me with him.
grrr.
When I was little I remember going to bed one night and my dad was completely engrossed in Space Invaders on the Atari 2600 (It had just come out a few weeks earlier). You know, eyes popping out, tongue hanging out. I mean focused. When I woke the next morning and went out to the TV room he was still playing the same damn game. He had never went to bed and was in the process of flipping the score multiple times. What a freak. Sometime later in the future he had a similar episode with Demon Attack. Thats when my mom stepped in and put a stop to it.

dubiouscubanx,
Just curious, how old is your dad? If he's around my age (late 20s/early 30s), then I can understand where his skills come from. If he's as old as my parents, then I'm amazed.

Once and only once.
My mom beat Shadow Link in Zelda II-The Adventure of Link before I did.

Actually, my dad would be in his sixties. He passed away four years ago. I was around eight years old when we first got the Atari 2600. We got it right when it came out. For some reason he was amazing at shooting games. He really only played Space Invaders, Demon Attack, Megamania, Asteroids and Yars Revenge. He would kill me and my older brother. However, me and my brother ruled at Kaboom, Kangaroo, Popeye and games like that. Now for some reason, my mom beat us all at Frogger. She also loved to play Casino and Slots. Never understood that one. My mom hasn't played a console game since the early eighties. Although, she still plays scrabble on the computer.

When I was younger my mom used to play NES, I'm not sure what games she beat before I did. My grandfather plays PS2 and beats games before me all the time.

When I was a lot younger, my dad beat Crystalis on NES before I could.
More recently, while not a parent, my younger sister actually beat Shenmue II before I did.

Sorry it took so long to get back. My dad will be 48 next month. IIRC, I got my NES back in '89-'90, so he would have been in his late 20's - early 30's when he beat SMB1.

I never really had a parent beat a game before I did... but it does remind me of when I was younger playing Mario Kart 64 with my Dad and he used to kick the shit out of me on that game lol.

But of course.
I think my dad beat Legend Of Zelda's Master Quest before I did (hell I don't think ive actually beaten it once yet, and I know that he has within the last year, not to mention back when I was younger and we were both playing it). My mom was beating Castlevania 2.... until I stole her save and made her grumpy and she stopped playing. My Grandfather beat pretty much any/every SNES RPG he had before I even touched one, not to mention the ones he had on NES (FF and Faxanadu among a few others). I'm sure my Grandma was schooling me on Dr. Mario and Tetris back when I was a youngin like no ones business. I still can't hold a Dr. Mario flame to her to save my life.

Some of the games my parents beat before me include:
- Challenge of the Ancient Empires (PC): My dad beat it long before I ever played it.
- Mario Party 7 (GCN): My dad beat the solo mode and unlocked the final board before me
