Spastic? Why is that word offensive in Europe?

You know, I've read elsewhere that some Ubisoft DS game was recalled in Europe for the same reason, and it was recently too.
So, in the spirit of international goodwill....

I think that game was Mind Quiz. A brain training game. I live in Australia I really could not give a damn about that word. It's just people overreacting.

See, this is what happens when you don't let Nintendo take 18+ months to localize for europe.

Does this mean DP member "SpasticFuctard" is not allowed in Europe?

According to Ninendo, "Unfortunately we have discovered that a small number of games contain the wrong version of the disk due to an assembly error."
Hard-to-find/rare version confirmed? :)

Hopefully this should explain... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spastic
For the same reason Americans get all rabid about exposed nipples on TV when it would barely batter an eyelid here ;)

Sittin' on the shelves in Aus, I can confirm, so they didn't pull all PAL copies.

It's all well and good Nintendo getting all shops to pull it off before they open on the release day (Friday 13th July 07), but what about online retailers such as Play.com and Amazon who usually send the game out a few days before so that it arrives on your doorstep on teh day of release? There has got to be quite a few copies floating around... No doubt destined for eBay at an inflated price
Upon browsing for Mario Party 8, it appears that so far the prices are as yet unaffected:

I also don't believe their BS excuse about "Wrong discs" ~ But, like with the whole Hot Coffee incident (GTA San Andreas), and the whole BT Van thing (The Getaway), it will be hard to tell which version is which unless you actually play through the game

Thanks for the link, I had no idea the word had such a connotation in the UK.

Interesting to compare the birth of a "swear word" in one territory with its harmless acceptance in North America.
My friend was just explaining to me the other day how most French-Canadian swears are derived from Catholicism.....
taboos just make no sense!

Afaik most shops here have pulled their stock, but yeah a bit too late for some to be sold and the online retailers I assume who have already sent theirs out.
If you want to see the shot in question, it's here...

I wonder...did they accadently include Girls Gone Wild instead of Mario Party?

Ducked in an EB Games by the office yesterday, they had it in. I didn't look at it so closely so it could have been a UK version (my Wii is a US Wii so I'm not buying it anyway). I just figured it was an Aus version... I'll have to double check at lunch tomorrow -- can't go today as it's Perth and nothing's open on a Sunday....

Hmm, I wonder what they mean by the "Wrong disc"!
When I originally read about it, I assumed that they printed the wrong label on it or something, but then shortly afterwards this whole "Spastic" thing was being spread around, so I now assume that when they say "Assembly error" they actually mean they printed the discs using unedited code
Personally, I don't know why people are getting so upset about. It's not as if the word in question was something like "Motherfucker" or similar, and i'm pretty sure that "Spasticc" would've gone straight over most people's heads in the first place.
Either way, the game is still widely available online, and i'm sure that a few thousand copies are still floating around. If Nintendo rerelease the game with some kind of alternate packaging to indicate a the changes (Ie, different barcode number), then that makes the original version that little bit rarer and more sought after by collector's!

Just more political correctness.
someone in the comments section basically said that spastic is the equivalent to the "N" word for people with a certain handicap.
Some day soon there will be a general mean-ness law passed and we'll all have to sit in the corner for an hour if we offend somebody.
coming soon to the banned list near you, fatty, baldy and of course the "N" word to end all "N" words......nerd
