I couldn’t find a thread on exactly this topic….so I’ll start a new one.

Not big a big PC gamer I’ve preferred to get my arcade emulated games in console form. No MAME for me.

Anyways, even though I own most of the arcade compilations out there, there are some big Arcade games that haven’t been collected, and some probably won’t due to licensing.

So, I was wondering: what are the most arcade-accurate console versions of these games.

Again, I’m looking for emulation or at least close to emulation – not just the most fun version. I love my Intellivision Burgertime, but I don’t know if you'd say that it’s a great emulation.

Popeye
Donkey Kong
Frogger
Burgertime
Q*bert
Tron <- I think there is an XBLA version coming that might suffice
NBA Jam
NFL Blitz
Daytona USA
Virtua Racing
Lethal Enforcers

Burgertime is on:
Arcade's Greatest Hits: Midway Collection 2 (PlayStation)

Q*Bert is available as a PS3 download.

Donkey Kong: NES or C64 ports, possibly.

Frogger is available for the SNES, among other systems.

I believe the original Tron is unlockable in Tron 2.0.

NBA Jam is on the SNES, right?

NFL Blitz is available for PSX, PS2, Xbox, etc.

What about Kangaroo? I don't think I've ever seen it available for a console.

So...you're saying a lot of these games are available on a lot of different platforms. Fascinating. Thanks Flack.

I'll try to be a little clearer.

Take NBA Jam. It's been released on SNES, Genesis, Xbox, Tiger LCD handhelds, Sega CD, Game Boy, N64, Game Boy Color, GBA, Saturn, PC, 32X, Game Gear and Jaguar. (Yes I realise some of these are Tournament Edition, Extreme etc.)

Is there one version that more faithfully replicates the original arcade version? I played the SNES version way back when and I recall noting that it wasn't exactly the same as the arcade. So now I wonder - did any of the later versions come closer (Saturn, Sega CD, 32X seem likely to have tried).

Ditto for the other titles.

Thanks.

well you don't want the NES donkey kong as it's missing the most fun level (the pie level). Really your best bet would be MAME even though you don't use it now as what could be better than the real thing right?

Popeye, Burgertime, and Q-Bert are all fine on NES though

Frogger is fine on Colecovision I believe

Best console versions (in my order of preference):

Popeye - NES, Atari 5200, ColecoVision
Donkey Kong - NES, Atari 7800, ColecoVision
Frogger - Genesis/SNES, Game Boy Advance (Konami Arcade Advance), ColecoVision
BurgerTime - PSX (Midway Collection 2), ColecoVision, NES
Q*bert - PSX, NES, ColecoVision

PSX versions of BurgerTime and Q*bert are basically perfect (emulation). The rest aren't, but they're probably the best we're gonna get.

what about the Atari 800 version of Donkey Kong? is it inferior to the others?
it does have the pie/cement level
i know it isnt exactly a console but thats all i use mine for since your not stuck with the sucky 5200 controllers :)

You're right...yes, Atari 8-bit Donkey Kong is tops (all four screens!), and yes, 5200 controllers do suck bigtime. :)

Actually, Atari 8-bit arguably had the best versions of Defender, Frogger, Joust, Zaxoon and many others. But, as you said, I wouldn't really consider those 'console' versions (although you can play them on an Atari XEGS console).

And I play them all of the time now on the Dreamcast via Atari 800 emulator :) The A800 had some awesome versions of these games.
