found this picture today, and had honestly forgotten about it. seemed something you all might appreciate though, so here it is.
my collection has grown tremendously in the last 7 or so years, and early last year my focus shifted to PS1, due to the availability of the games on the system and my relatively small percentage of games for the system(i was sitting at about 200 when i shifted focus). anyway, the shelf i had these on was absorbed into SNES when i reorganized, so i had to find a place for my(at this point about 550) PS1 games.
i had no more wall space, so i decided id take one of the large 7.5' shelves from my basement(previously holding dups id yet to sell) and place it upright, covering the window on the back of the house. im not keen on drilling a hundred holes in my walls because i dont plan to stay in this house much longer, so i thought i would simply secure this thing in place with downward pressure from the ceiling, which works great for the rest of the shelving units in my game room. i set it up and waited about 20 minutes to make sure it would stay and it was fine, so i started the task of loading various games upon it. loose genesis, ngage, dreamcast, PS1 and virtual boy were all alphabetized and placed neatly on the shelf after a mere 2.5 hours. looked great. i was cleaning up a bit when i heard a noise behind me, and looked up in time to see 550 PS1 games get fired towards the bedroom door. turns out the width of this shelf was inadequate to support the top heaviness of the games, and, as i later realized, it was sitting on tack strip at the wall, so had been leaning a bit forward. that and i stacked 100 lbs of weight on the top of it, and expected this tall of a shelf to stay upright on the width of a cd case(its about 6" deep). stupid idea, and one where i had a dreadful feeling the whole time and kind of ignored it.
if the shelf with the sega genesis games hadnt been there, who knows what wouldve happened as the PS1 shelf fell onto me and the games, but it served to stop the shelf from falling further, and likely helped save a ton of game discs from damage.
all said and done i had to replace 51 games cases and had badly damaged three sealed games cases, but lost no games. i do still find bits of PS1 case throughout my game room, though. certainly could have ended up much worse. it could have been saturn or sega cd!
the first pic is the aftermath - theres me in the background, wondering what the hell to do now, and how im going to leave the room with the floor 1' deep in PS1 games....the bottom pic is how it looks today, with roughtly 20 screws into the wall around the window.
