Sonic Xtreme is in the wild.
After much hard work and money.
Only the rar with the artwork and readme is genuine,
there's a version with a virus in it put out there by
some trolls.
Respect to the 96 who made this happen.

If this is legit, very cool. Will have to wait a couple weeks as I'm moving, and my Saturn is already put away. Thanks for the info.

Respect indeed. The torrent from the above link is legit. Thank you to everyone who ponied up the cash for this, and had the charitable sense to share it with us all! It is extremely cool to see this running on real hardware.
My mind still buzzes with dreams of the fisheye version surfacing someday... someday...

Is there a way to make it run on actual Saturns? I thought they all had some sort of CD key that made burned games useless.

Outside of modding the saturn. I have no real interest in doing so :P

There's a rediculous swap trick you can use, or you can buy a (somewhat expensive and hard to find) Saturn System Disc (http://gamerhistory.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=661)

The game needs the ridiculously hard to get SEGA first party disc KD-01, the easily found 3rd part KD-02 won't work.

Toss the iso into a hex editor and change the part of the header that says "SEGA ENTERPRISES" to read "SEGA TP T-123". It'll work with any 3rd party system disc after that. It's amazing how simple the Saturn's security state machine works.
Matter of fact, i'll write an auto-patcher for it.

Um, not to be ungrateful but there are 150 bad sectors in that iso. I've patched it so it registers as 3rd party, but every time i switch the region it screws up the iso beyond repair.
Whoever ripped the disc seems to have left out the EDC (error detection coding. Rebuilding the EDC screws up the audio track. Any chance of getting a full rip?
I'll keep playing with it when i get a chance this weekend, but a complete rip would be nice.

@ProgrammingAce:
There's nothing wrong with the ISO. The "bad" sectors you mention are the gap between the data track and the first audio track. Each disc ripped in raw mode has that. EDC and ECC is also there, unless your ISO is different from mine (unlikely).
but every time i switch the region it screws up the iso beyond repair.
How to hell do you switch the region then? :D All you have to do is to seek to offset 0x00000020 and change the following 16 bytes.

I must have a bad copy of the iso, because when i patch the region it causes the graphics chip to flip out (both in real hardware and in an emulator). I've patched it manually with a hex editor and through Saturn Region Patcher 2.1a. Both with the same effect. The bad sectors are well inside the music portion of the iso, i'm ignoring the "bad" data between tracks.
While i'm more then willing to accept that i screwed the process up, it isn't that complicated. Change 0x00000050 to "U" and change 0x00000F44 to read "For USA and CANADA."

That doesn't really sound like a bad ISO. Since the data track is in raw format (2352 bytes/sector), did you fix the edc/ecc of the sector after patching it?
As for the Saturn Region Patcher, does it support raw data tracks at all? Most of such tools can only handle the standard iso format with 2048 bytes/sector. Can't test it myself, as it requires the .net framework, which I'll never ever install on my system...

The patcher supports raw data (i think it only works on raw data tracks, not sure).
I played with it some more this morning, started over from scratch. Skipping the patching tool entirely, i patched it in a hex editor. It works fine in the emulator, but behaves strangely on real hardware.
When you run the iso in the emulator without a bios, the game starts up fine. When you have the bios on startup the game refuses to load. I have the same issue with the patched and unpatched iso. I'm going to download the copy off the torrent above and see if it matches what i have. I got my file from *another* source, i assumed they would be the same but i may have screwed something up assembling the files.

Which bios did you try? I can't use SSF, so I'm using Yabause instead, and it will boot the game without problems using the correct bios.

You know, no one can help you unless you provide a bit more information. "the emulator"? Which one? And "it doesn't let me play it" isn't really helpful either.

Works fine for me on a real Saturn with a mod chip.
Game is totally useless tho.. all you can do is run for like 10 feet and then hit the invisble end of the universe.
Nice tech demo I guess, but just go watch a video of it on youtube, its like the exact same thing.

Then it's not correctly mounted, or you didn't configure the emulator to use the correct drive.
Poofta!

Yep, that's pretty much all you get.
I still have to go back and get the bits working so you can boot the game off a 3rd party boot disc... that's somewhere on my "todo" list...
