When I play a letterbox or widescreen DVD in my PS2, the video looks stretched out. Everyone looks like Bert from Sesame Street. ( I have a regular sized TV) Full Screen movies look fine.
When I change the screen size settings, the screen setting when I watch the movie is always at 16:9 , Anything I'm doing wrong, any way to fix the video?
Please don't tell me to just buy a DVD player.

The 16:9 function is for widescreen displays only.
Since you have a regular 4:3 TV, change the setting on the PS2 to reflect this. Your widescreen movies will stop getting stretched.

This doesnt seem to work, I set it to 4:3 and Full but I still get the stretched image. I think something may be wrong with it. Unless maybe I save it wrong?

Try deleting your PS2 settings file and see if that helps.

Wouldn't full make it fill the screen to get rid of the black bars? I'd try turning that off.

I'm an avid letterbox format fan, I have a collection of letterbox VHS movies. I've always watched them on 4:3 tv's. This is definately a distorted image. I've been watching them on my Xbox as thats the only way I could get a good image, but I"ve moved my PS2 into my bedroom and want to watch movies there as well.
I may try the above suggestion of deleting the PS2 settings.
Its funny though, when a movie preview is playing in widescreen, the image looks fine, but when the actual movie starts, its distorted.

DVD Menus are rarely anamorphic (stretched to the limits of your set) so that would explain why they look fine. The PS2 is stretching your image when the movie starts because the DVD is telling your PS2 to do this. I am convinced this is simply a settings issue on your PS2. The problem is there are all kinds of settings that can only be set when there is a DVD playing in your PS2. The "browser" that comes up when you start your PS2 (with no disc) isn't where these settings are. If you have a PS2 remote control, the solution would be easier. You can access the menu immediately. If you are just using a game controller to control the DVD player, it is more complicated.
One thing I know for sure (from personal experience) is that the settings you need to change can only be accessed when a DVD (not a game) is playing in the PS2. Why this is, is anyones guess.
