Since you brought up the 2600, I'd recommend Indy 500, Video Olympics, and of course, Warlords. Seriously, Warlords is like the ultimate party game.

Pick up one of the repro NWC carts. Six minutes, twenty seconds a player isn't too bad and it's a lot of fun to play!

Atari 2600 game night?! Good man!
Warlords has already been recommended but I'll second it. Nothing beats 4-player Warlords for retro multiplayer goodness.
Combat, Air-Sea Battle, Space War, Sky Diver and Indy 500 are all good too because these are all two-player games that are timed to end after less than five minutes and with a clearly defined winner.
Circus Atari is another fun one for a quick and interesting 2-player competition.
Game on.

Circus Atari is another fun one for a quick and interesting 2-player competition.
Circus Atari is one of the most punishing, highly addicitive games ever.
While we're talking about paddles, Demons to Diamonds is an awesome two player game.
In the modern age, one of the best "score attack" games that's available on the market is Pac-Man Championship Edition on XBLA. Run the 5 minute board back to back and go after the high score. Infinately entertaining.

If you have a Gamecube and a GBA, for the love of God, you must track down Pac-Man Vs.
If you have an Odyssey2...I have one word for you: SMITHEREENS!

Another Warlords vote here.
There is no experience like multiplayer Warlords.
Other VCS recommendations: Combat, Outlaw, Activision Boxing and Ice Hockey, Joust, Pele's Soccer, Air/Sea Battle, Circus Atari, Canyon Bomber, Freeway, Space Invaders, Indy 500, Dodge 'Em, and Mario Bros.

I think that's why he suggested a REPRO, as in "knock-off"...

Too many possibilities. Are there certain systems you'd prefer lists for? How many players are there? Is there a particular genre they like?
From a 90's perspective, a few what'cha must haves:
NBA Jam
Mario Party
Mario Kart
Contra
Street Fighter
Tetris

I reccomend Street Fighter II (too many systems to name) and Sega Swirl for the Dreamcast. I have played Swirl with my friends until I was colorblind.
P.S. Where can I get a reproduction NWC 1990? I really want one of those.
