One of my favorite series and an expensive console. I'll be missing out on Disgaea 3 for a long time.

I can't wait. It seems Nippon Ichi has officially chosen the PS3 over 360 (not a big surprise).

#2 wasn't interesting enough to make me even remotely consider buying a PS3 to play #3. Maybe years down the road.

Dang it. A game that will make me seriously consider picking up a PS3.
The main question is, if the game still operates on the basic 2D sprite principle, why bother making it for the PS3? The technology of the PS3 is flatout unnecessary, and there are millions more PS2 owners out there.

I'm pretty sure since it is going to be on PS3, the sprites will be shown in full HD. Also having it be on the blue-ray disk can offer more game content and dialouge.

Well, they said the backgrounds will be rendered in HD, which would be nice; albeit unnecessary. Pixelated 2D sprites in HD just seems pointless.
The larger capacity of blu-ray is relatively unnecessary as well. Disgaea 2 doesn't even use a dual-layer DVD. 8.5GB should be *plenty* of space for everything in non-HD mode.
I'm just afraid that releasing such a niche game on a console with such a small install base would be dooming the game before it even got launched.

while this is a good point, you gotta think that Sony is probably giving them a good chunk to put a game like that on thier system because they want thier new system to appeal to the same audiences that the PS2 has, which still seems to be doing well with all the niche games comming to it.

I don't think Sony is giving anybody money for exclusives at this point. It's no surprise that the PS3 is going to get the majority of traditional JRPG's this generation. If for no other reason than the failure of the 360 in Japan. In time, I'm sure we'll start seeing quite a few JRPG's on the Wii as well.

13 MONTH BUMP
Just got my signed copy of the Double Jump strategy guide today. Disgaea 3 comes out in less than 2 weeks. This is game is going to be great. Anyone else buying this on day 1?

I don't think this will remain exclusive to the PS3, but we'll see.
Too Human(360) comes out the week before Mercenaries 2, and Infinite undiscovery come out the week after (so it looks). Tales of Vesperia (360), STALKER Clear Sky (PC), and Vampire Rain, and I think Ratchet And Clank expansion come out the same week. Ultimately it looks like Disgaea 3 will be a tough choice amongst those others.
I only include Vampire Rain because it is supposedly releasing at $39.99...

Right now this and MGS 4 are the only reasons I want a PS3, so I'm hoping it does, indeed, go cross-platform. Really though I'm still content with the original, I haven't even played 2 yet.
Too Human
Can't wait!

I ordered the $90 bundle of Disgaea 3 over at rosenqueen.com and essentially bought a PS3 for it, so yeah, I'm excited.

I'll mail you a box of used medical gauze and navel lint for twenty bucks. That's not only cheaper, but more fun than Vampire Rain.
I'm picking up Disgaea 3 myself, though god only knows when I'll find time to play it. It looks pretty good from the videos I've seen.

That's because it was. It was originally intended to be released for the PS2, but was changed to PS3 mid-development. This is part of the reason Nippon Ichi is only charging $49.99 as opposed to $59.99.

Do NOT buy Vampire Rain, it is by far one of the worst games I've ever had the unfortune to play!
It seems that Disgaea 3 is not heading for a PAL release, so I'll propably pick this up on import. Thankfully the PS3 has no region protection :)

The demo of vampire rain was so damn bad (on 360) that I cant imagine how mad people that bought the game were without trying it out or looking into it at all before purchase.
Disgaea 3 will probably be a future purchase for me, mainly because there are sooo many other games coming out this year that I cant buy a 100+hr rpg right now...
I'm still trying to decide whether or not I want this game. I've never played the first two, and I can't usually get into SRPGs. In addition to those two points, I'm already going to have a ton of RPGs to play in the form of Too Human, Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery and Fallout 3. Maybe I'll pick this up during the Toys R Us sale in October or something.
How accessible is the series for people like myself who are hardcore JRPG fans, but aren't very good at SRPGs?

Well...the Disgaea 3 guide is 368 pages long if that gives you any indication. I'd say the Disgaea series can be complex if you want it to be (i.e. taking your characters to lvl. 9999) or very simple (if you choose to just play the story). Keep in mind...Disgaea is the text book DEFINITION of "level grind". It's fun grinding...but you can easily spend 100's of hours leveling up and gaining insane abilities if you so choose.

I'm looking foward to Disgaea 3 in a couple of weeks and definately picking it up. I'm hoping I can finally finish Persona 3 before I pick it up. Very doubtful though as I'm about 80hrs into it.

In stores tomorrow, Tuesday, August 26th.
Good news from people that already have the Japanese version:
Much less grinding this time around. Where people could spend 500 - 1000 hours in Disgaea and Disgaea 2 leveling up....Disgaea 3 is maxing out at 200 hours. Also getting your character to level 9999 can take as little as 3 - 5 minutes. I have no idea how.

I dont see why someone would spend over 100 hours grinding. You can play another game in that time! Or even go outside.

Disgaea is like a fighting game; you can play it pretty much forever. I put over 200 hours into the first Disgaea over the course of three years. It was my relaxation game.

Yeah, I actually loved the grinding, because it didn't feel like a grind. It always felt new somehow. I'm almost disappointed to hear that they've cut back quite a bit, but maybe that means I'll actually finish one now (100+ hrs into 1 and not even close).

The point of Disgaea IS grinding. It's always fun and still enjoyable well after 100 hours. Like mentioned above, you can come back to this game over the course of several years. There's so many ways (and things) to level up...the grinding never gets tedious.

Just picked up my copy today (the usual opened copy from gamestop) but I got a soundtrack with it so it was alright since I got a bonus. I haven't played it yet but I am hoping that they keep a bunch of grinding and depth in the game. I like games where grinding is key. Games like Lost Odyssey where there basically is no grinding, while a good game, just isn't as good to me.
edit: just played it last night and think it is pretty good so far and has plenty of grinding in it already. The playing field is pretty nice looking and there is some funny dialouge in it. The only thing I can think of is the character sprites don't seem to be as defined as I thought they were going to be. Not the design of the characters themselves but just the sprites look a tad blocky. Other than that its great.
