I'm in the midst of getting my act together for Classic Gaming Expo at the end of the month but wanted all of you NAVA peeps to know you're on my mind too. It's going to seem like a long break to some of us but the August event should be a great "last burst of summer gaming", so don't miss it.

If you missed the June/July get-together, you missed some great fun. Check out the pictures:
http://www.digitpress.com/images/store

We'll continue to do the retro tournament as long as it's a crowd-pleaser. Expect a few new twists next time!

Remember to bring stuff to trade or sell. Wheeling and dealing is a major part of the NAVA experience.

WHEN: Saturday, August 25th, noon to midnight
WHERE: Digital Press Videogames (hey, you can now type this right into Mapquest and we pop up!)
WHAT: 6 arcade machines, at least 4 home consoles, an internet gaming center, trading with your fellow gamer/collectors and hot tournament action.

Awesome. Any chance we could run a Super Smash Bros: Melee Tournament in addition to the random retro?

I know it's early, but count me in. I'm bringing, at the very least, NGCD and Lynx bundles with various other items to trade.

I'll most likely be there, but I can't guarantee anything. I might bring some stuff for trading or selling, depending on if i have my NES stuff by then...

It's been a few months sisnce I've stopped on by. I'll try my best to be there. I'll put the babies into a formula coma before I leave.

It's kinda funny watching them just zone out on a bottle of warm milk...

Personally, I think it's great when they first start trying to grab the bottle themselves. That look of determination is priceless...

Here's a list and map of nearby hotels and such, complements of Mapquest. I also sent you one via PM.

The one most convenient that I know is a reputable stay is the Holiday Inn in Totowa:
http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hotel/totnj?rpb=hotel&crUrl=/h/d/hi/1/en/availsearch&ias=y

There are other cheaper places and other even closer places but I don't know what the rap is on those, you may need to research the Mapquest link for more info.

Me and my girlfriend will be in attendance. Should be fun, it's been almost a year I think since I went to a NAVA meet. I'm also looking foward to seeing changes to the store.

PLEASE BRING BOXED TG-16 GAMES PEOPLE! I am trying to complete my collection, and don't wanna get them all off ebay, due to it being a hassle and expensive. If you have games to trade or sell please bring them and we'll try and work something out.

On that note, I'm looking for many Resident Evil games so bring those along as well. I'd be happy to try and make a deal out of the tradebox I'm bringing.

Also, if anyone has some Earthbound stuff they wouldn't mind getting rid of/selling, please bring it. I'm in dire need of some EB stuff.

Edit: I'm definitely going to make it! I have Music school starting the 27th, which I can't miss, so I got pretty lucky...

So as not to let the patented Retro Tournament get too routine or *gasp* uninteresting, we're going to change it up a little.

Bring your Super Smash Bros. Melee game face, because we're throwing down Nintendo-style on the 25th.

This might be a good time to go "locals" vs "veterans", too. I'm curious to see how the old-school guys compare to some of the hotshot teens on my block.

Some questions about the tourny.

1. Will we be using official tourny rules? This includes no items, among other things. info can be found at smashwiki.com

2. Will the fights be one vs. one?

3. Will there be a seperate teams tourny?

If someone else could mean me, I'd have no problem running one before or after the singles, assuming I would still be able to participate.

I'm excited already! I'm just worried that we're going to get a much smaller crowd for the team matches...
Also, if anyone wants to play in the team tourney, I'll try and accommodate you the best I can.

Regardless, I found a damn good program for setting up tournaments online, and it's only an 11 Meg file. I use it on my comp, and everything seems to be all legit. I'm thinking after people sign up/start to sign up we could start using it.

Also, I had one question. Can I still participate in the team tourney?

They're on different days... what's the conflict?

Ah, I remember in my youth I'd be at one event on the west coast and on the next day one on the east. How did north Jersey and Pennsylvania get to be so far apart?

Just kidding, of course. But seriously, you gotta want it.

See if you can carpool, if all else fails.

Edit: Also, so there's no confusion later, I'm going to post the rules for the 2v2 Tournament now, to avoid any confusion.

Format
- Winner of 1 match advances.
- Single Elimination.
- Matches are 4 stock,8 minute time limit.
- Ties are broken by stock, then percentage, then sudden death.
- Final will be decided by the best 2 out of 3 matches.
- Final will be played on Final Destination.
Rules
- All characters are unlocked and selectable.
- You can NOT change character mid-tournament.
- Stage Selection will be made by fixed random selection(Shown below).
Settings
- Items OFF
- Friendly Fire ON
- Random fixed stages: Yoshi's Story, Pokémon Stadium, Battlefield, Dream Land (N64), Final Destination, Rainbow Cruise, Kongo Jungle 64

One last rule, but I figure it's important to know, so it's going down here.

Available by request, characters are chosen double-blind - at the same time, so that neither player knows his opponent's character beforehand. Players always reserve the option to force a double-blind pick.

I've just recently acquired my first X-Box. I'm very interested in the various things I can do with the system, including modding it to be a media center, MythTV front-end, MAME-box, etc...

So if anyone wants to talk Xbox mods Saturday I'll be eager to listen.

Also, of course, I'll be looking for cheap XBox games, accessories, etc...

So far, I picked up Crimson Skies cheap, and really like it a lot.

The Smirk and I are going camping with our families that weekend, dammit! A NAVA & Too Many Games weekend would have been an awesome way to end the summer. I have already requested off for Saturday Sept 29, so I hope that's when the next one is. My September weekends are pretty much spoken for, and October-December are impossible for me. Please, please please let it be the 29th. I should have lots of stuff to get rid of by then.

I've been working hard to get to your personal calendar so that I can plan NAVA meetings on days you can't be there BWAHAHAHA!

Actually, NAVA pretty much always falls on the last Saturday of every month. So it's easier for you to re-schedule than it is for me.

I love your avatar by the way. Have we met?

PS Ferg: NAVA will likely be on that day in September but I likely will not be there. There's an annual "Chi-town Classic" that looks like it might fall on that weekend. I'll know better in a few days. Haven't seen you in awhile, I hope we can catch up soon.

A NAVA regular that I know can really help in this area is "goblin" but I haven't seen him at the store in a few months, his attendance is unconfirmed.

Thanks for the nod. I'm not sure yet if I can make it on Saturday. If I need to go into the office then I'll stop by on my way home, otherwise I might pass as I've got too much stuff going on at home.

But Steve, if I do make it I'd love to talk to you about xbox modding, if I don't you can always shoot me a PM if you have specific questions. I've worked on about 6 different ones over the course of the past year, a mix of soft mods and hard mods. I have worked with both the X3 chip and the Aladdin chip, and upgraded my X3 system to a 250GB HD a few months back. On the software mod side I have done the Mechassault game save exploit and on a different box I just did the swap method. I've played around with various dashboards but I prefer using XBMC as the dash since I tend to watch Divx converted movies with the system more than I play games some days. There are a number of homebrew games which I've fooled around with, but the best part of the system are the emulators which are excellent. I agree the information out there is overwhelming and somewhat confusing, especially when you first start digging into it.

If I do make it I will probably be bringing one of the softmod'ed system which is in my trade box if anyone is interested. (It's just the stock HD, no power cords, controllers, or video cables - but I'm sure Joe can let us hook it up to play for a bit to check things out.) This is one of the systems I got from forum member RCM a few months back and I didn't get any of the cables with it.

Should I make it other unique things in my trade box include a Joe Montana Sport Talk FB proto for the Genesis. (8 EPROM board that stands about 8 inches high). A C64 controller modified with a P/S 2 keyboard adapter to work like a real C64.

One the other hand I would be looking for an LCD screen for an original GBA (not SP). This isn't the lens or the bezel, but the actual LCD from inside with the ribbon cable. So if you have a broken GBA with a non cracked screen I would be interested. I had an afterburner modded system that I want to repair, so I need to swap this out. I am also looking for an original xbox S controller, an xbox DVD remote/receiver, JAMMA boards, TG-16 cards, maybe a GB micro or Nintendo DS w/ pass cart.

I should know in a few hours if I can make it.

Apollo
08-24-2007, 06:55 PM
Goblin, I can definitely hook you up with a GBA of mine that I don't use. The battery case is missing, but if you need the LCD you should be ok.

Just ask around for me, I'll be showing up at about 1:30

NoahsMyBro
08-24-2007, 10:39 PM
Goblin - I'd definitely like to pick your brain about this stuff. I've got absolutely no idea what to do with the system right now. I'm interested in:

* XBMC - Media Center, right? Does this require some connectivity with a Win PC, or is it a stand-alone thing? Once I set this up, can the machine still be used to play games?

* XBox/MythTV - I understand I can set the XBox up as a front-end for a MythTV server. If I do this, I am pretty sure the system cannot be used to play games anymore. True/False?

* Emulators - MAME, VCS, Atari 8-bit?....

* Networking - short of physically hacking things, is there any way to do wireless networking with the system? And, really reaching, if so, can it do WPA2?

I don't think I care about going online with the system. I've got minimal interest in online gaming. I was very impressed, though, with Geometry Wars on the 360, and saw a clone of that somebody wrote for the PC. If games like that are available as downloads on the Xbox, I might be more interested in getting it online than I thought.

I'm not opposed to hardware mods to the system, provided they don't ruin the cosmetics, and (should go without saying) provided they aren't harmful to the system.

When I began reading up on things, I became confused when I started reading about locking and unlocking the hard drive. *If* I understood correctly, I cannot take the drive out of the XBox, clone the drive with Norton Ghost, Acronis TrueImage, etc..., and then stick the new, cloned drive in the XBox. Is that true? If so, I'm surprised. I thought that would be a safe way to experiment.

Also, I assume the type of modchip I get matters. Earlier in the thread kaedesdisciple mentioned the Xecuter3, I think. I have no idea of the Pros and Cons of the various chips. I do remember taping "The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" off of WRNO's album hour 20 years ago, though! (Roger Waters ?)

Were there any decent wireless controllers for the XBox? I'm thinking of something as high-quality as Wavebirds.

I'm also on the lookout for a DVD Playback kit for the system. They aren't as available as I expected, but I've been assuming DP B&M has plenty.

If I have Super Monkey Balls 1 & 2 for the Gamecube, is there any reason to get SMB for the Xbox?

Finally, I actually don't have Halo, and am interested in a cheap, presumably used copy.

What time is the best to show up?

Come somewhat early and introduce yourself! I'll be there at about 12:30, and kaedesdisciple said he'll be there a bit after 12. The 1v1 tournament for Smash Bros is at 6pm, and the 2v2 tournament is right after that.

Come early just in case someone brings something in that you might want. That way you don't have to worry about other people.

look around, talk to people, play games. I'm pretty sure the computers are free during NAVA, so you can do whatever.

Heading out the door now...

Another great get-together!

We played lots of Super Smash Bros Melee (including two tournaments), Super NES games and Taiko Drum Master (thanks Matt for bringing all of those add-on import disks that I never knew existed).

I picked up a Donkey Kong Country Competition complete in case. I actually had one of these already, but this guy had the brochure that was mailed along with it, as well as the original receipt. So my old one is up for grabs, I'm taking reasonable offers.

I also picked up loads of boxed NES games. Thanks, Greg!

kaedesdisciple and his wife brought a TETRIS cake. Videogame themed cakes seem to be some new tradition at NAVA meetings. A welcome one, I might add (burp).

Let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

Had a great time with you all on Saturday. We hope you enjoyed the cake! Joe, thanks again for the great deal. I really appreciate your honesty, you're one hell of a business man.
