I picked this game over the Madden series. It's easy to pick up and play on any system. NES, Genesis or the Super NES ..one of the greatest Games ever

Ok, since we have this thread up and people agree the game rules, how about a debate on what version of Tecmo Super Bowl was the best? I guess I'd have to say the Genesis or NES versions of the first Tecmo Super Bowl.

Good idea, but it's the NES version, hands-down. The 16-bit versions were superior graphically but the gameplay just felt slightly off (though still excellent). Plus the 16-bit version came out a couple years later-- and TSB just isn't the same without classic players like Bo Jackson and Christian Okoye.

What gets me is that Tecmo Bowl just gets too much credit over Tecmo Super Bowl. I mean, I understand that the game was very influential and was a great game when it came out (1987 in arcades, 1989 on NES)... and heck, there wouldn't have been a TSB without a TB first. But TSB expanded on it so much that they're not even in the same league. So it bothers me because often when magazines or websites make lists of the best sports/football games ever, they list Tecmo Bowl rather than TSB (for example, just check out the most recent issue of Game Informer).

Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES is the greatest sports game ever created.

Original NES Tecmo Bowl, FTW! Zen like in its simplicity, yet still a blast to play seventeen years after its release. Long live Bo and the panty Raiders!

you guys are all crazy! all the Tecmo Super Bowl games suck! I would never waste my time on those games when I can play Madden! and I would never waste my time and money paying someone to update my NES version of the game with new players and stats.

ok joking aside they are making a new Tecmo Bowl game. It obviously won't have any real players or teams but not many details have been released as to what kind of game it will be yet.

My favorite is the NES "Super Tecmo Bowl" I don't know why but growing up me and my friends always called it "Super Tecmo Bowl" (see example 1 in the video posted, those are my friends) instead of "Tecmo Super Bowl" I blame the Mario games.

I also agree that Tecmo Super Bowl deserves more credit than Tecmo Bowl. For one it was the first game ever to included both the real NFL teams and NFL players. Plus it really paved the way for stat tracking in video games.

I also like the SNES and Genesis versions but they are all second to Tecmo Super Bowl on the NES

Here's the link, for those who like to read things: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/787/787604p1.html

Comparing it to the Madden series really isn't fair. They're both football games, but Tecmo is more arcadey and Madden tries to be more realistic. Both are great games, but I have logged hundreds of more hours with Tecmo.

The best one is definitely Tecmo Super Bowl for NES. The next-gen releases for SNES/Genesis/PS1 range from pretty good (TSB on SNES) to eye-explodingly unplayable (TSBIII).

The ROM hacks that update the rosters to the current NFL's, and the special USFL/WFL/etc roster editions just make the series better.

The best and one of the few sports games I really enjoy. What make sit fun also is that there's a few hack sout for TSB NES with updated rosters, NCAA rosters and so forth.

What's the link for them again?

I always hear about the updated rosters but I'd rather play as the NFL stars from the 80's and 90's who were originally in the game. Padding QB stats with the likes of Jim McMahon, Boomer Esiason, Joe Montana, Dan Marino, John Elway or even Jay Schroeder is infinitely better than using the likes of Michael Vick, Kyle Boller, Byron Leftwich, Eli Manning or David Carr.

Tecmo Super Bowl is my fave football game hands down.

Were there any other side scrolling football games?

Quite a few, off the top of my head:

Nfl Football (nes) - I rented this as a kid and don't think I ever gained yardage
Joe Montana/Nfl series (genesis) - at least a few of them were side scrolling or at least had the option to switch to that view.
Real Sports Football (2600) - I think thats the name of it
Super High Impact (snes/gen/arcade)
Pigskin Footbrawl (gen) - if you really want to count that as a football game

Probably a few more that escape my memory at 1:30 in the morning and none of them match up to the fun of the tecmo series (super high impact and pigskin are entertaining though).

I've heard it's pretty weak from a couple of different people but the best way to find out is to get a copy yourself and play it.

The Playstation version is the worst in the series. About 2 years ago I tried to sit down with it and really give it a chance and I had some fun but it lacks all the charm that the earlier versions had plus its really not a very good game. Some things I loved about the earlier versions was the music and the cutscenes.

Never played the arcades. Suprized I didn't see them in your room or doom pictures. How are those?

I've never played the arcade version but I know it was on a Xbox Tecmo Arcade compilation.

Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES really is the one that created the obsession. I think that's evident by the number of hacks and updates it gets each year. If you go over to the Tecmo Repository (http://www.knobbe.org/) you find that they have different ways of rating a rom update. You can get one with the Original rating scale which is unbalanced like the original with todays stars like LaDainian Tomlinson have stats like Barry Sanders or some people make a more balanced rom.

I've actually been without Tecmo Super Bowl for a year now. This thread really makes me want to get my Nintendo back. Lucky for me its just at my parents house which i'll be visiting next week.

I just finished a Tecmo Super Bowl season on the Genesis, and though I had thought it was maybe better than the NES version because of the graphics, the gameplay lacks in comparison. I lead the league by a landslide in punting and sacks. Basically my entire defensive unit led the league in sacks. My running back, Chris Warner, finished last in running yardage. This game lacks the running back "shred" action of the NES version, so it's hard for either team to gain running yardage. For defense, choosing most any passing play will result in an automatic QB sack. The NES season has much more realistic stats. I lost to the Chargers in the playoffs semi-finals, 6-0. Does the SNES version or TSB II or III have better gameplay than the Genesis TSB?

I was never a big fan of sports games. A big barrier for me was lack of general sports knowledge (not too interested in the actual sports). So my favorite sports games tended to be the more stylized versions rather than aiming for realism (NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, Kirby's Dream Course).

However, I've found through my store that Tecmo Super Bowl completely obliterates the Madden titles in terms of sales, and many of my friends have mentioned that it was the only great football series they enjoyed on 16-bit consoles.

The NES version is also one of my favorite sports games while I'm not much of a sports game player. The only other sports game on the NES that I will say is equally good as this game is Ice Hockey.

^Pro Sport Hockey is damn good, give it a try. Also Baseball Stars would be a baseball equivelant if RBI isn't up your alley
