View Full Version : Custom Neo Geo top plates?

I've seen a couple pictures on Flickr of consolized Neo Geo MVSs with custom top plates. Is there somewhere you can buy them, or do you have to make these yourself? Basically, I'd be interested in a clear plastic one for my MV-2F (still in the cabinet), as the one I have is actually a bit rusty. Plus, something besides metal would look a lot cooler.

Here's an example, though it's on a consolized MVS:

As far as I know they just take the metal ones off the MVS and paint them.

That one is definitely different...there are no sides. Also, it's probably a smooth plastic, as the regular top plates are pretty course (not nice for a consolization project like this one).

I'm not really a big fan of adding what looks like that mini supergun to the front of the MVS board to consolize it. That and the wood baseboard add a whole lot of weight and size to what is already a large, heavy unit. That and it just looks a little strange to me. Installing the RGB->NTSC board inside the unit would save a lot of space and keep the system a little more compact. The controller ports on the board would work with standard NG controllers anyway. If your worry is the power switch location, it's pretty easy to install one in the front as well. Just my opinion is all.

Actually, I'm not trying to consolize mine. I'm trying to replace my rusty top plate with something that looks better--like clear plastic, or something. That way, I could show friends what it looks like; I still want to keep it an arcade system.

It may seem pointless, as you don't see the thing a whole lot, but I have a couple reasons:

1. It's a 2-slot, so I swap games out more often (therefore I see inside pretty often)
2. The current top plate is extremely ugly and rusty
3. Everyone who has seen the cabinet wants to know what it looks like inside. I'd like something in there that wouldn't be a let-down (a clear plastic top plate would probably work great for this)

Heck, sounds like a fun project, why not give it a go. Find some nice plastic, cut your self out a stencil, and get some Krylon Fusion.

I would offer to sell my services out to you, but I currently have too many projects on my hands as it is.

Maybe I will, if I have the time (well, I do, actually...). Never done something like this before, so it might be fun. I'd probably make mine with sides, though, to help combat dust (even with the sides, my board was literally gray with dust--it took me an hour to clean it up).

Should I just go to any hardware store to find the plastic? What type would I be looking for, specifically?
