I'm going to throw out there: "Super Hunchback" for the original Game Boy.
It was a platformer whose rather obtuse physics required extremely precise control all the time...and it had no saves or reloading or anything. I'm sure very few people here have ever played it...and I'd encourage the rest of you not to go out of your way to do so.

Gaires for the Genesis. Hot damn.
Any of the Swordquest games for the 2600. I've owned Fireworld and Earthworld for at least two decades and have never won either one.

That's a joke, right? I think I beta this in 10 minutes on first or second try the week it came out.
Anyway, I did eventually legitimately beat Holy Diver, btw:

One of my greatest accomplishments ever. Not much competes with that.

Many kudos, Rob. I hope to accomplish this eventually, what with it being the only Famicom title I own at the moment. Hell, I'm amazed that I managed to beat level 3!
I'm also putting in a bid for Holy Diver being the hardest game ever, though R-Type 2 also grazes that edge. I eventually beat R-Type 2, but it took oh-so-much time and looking up exactly how to beat the final boss as quickly as possible before the battle degraded into absolute chaos. What can I say? When it comes to pain, Irem knows what works without somehow managing to make their games unfun.

Problem with Double Dragon 3 is its learning curve. It's hard from the beginning. With pratice thoguh (and the fact that you get two more fighters later in the game) you can beat it. Of course, it will not be easy.
