Classic vs. Modern Gaming

Well what do you say? With limited time on my hands, I've been into 8-bit more than anything else lately though Zelda WW may change all that.

Just the other day a friend and I went directly from Steel Battalion to Combat (game 05).

And I realized that they are essentially the same game.

I am more of a classic fan. Plus the prices for most games are cheaper the older they get (except for the really rare ones) when compared to new games.

I tend more toward classic stuff, though some modern (though not terribly recent) titles trip my trigger too - Dune 2000, the original Starfleet Command, stuff like that.

I also like the newer titles - mostly recent PS1 games - which have a classic feel to them, but include some latter-day bells and whistles. Pipe Dreams 3D is digital crack to me.

I'm not voting because I don't like the choices--I prefer the 16-bit era, but dig a lot of 8-bit games. Never got beyond SNES, although Mario 64 was neat. Sadly never played the N64 Zelda games.

Recently saw a quick demo of Metal Gear Solid 2 on PS2; WOW. O_O We've come a long way.
Then I played an in-store demo of Metroid Prime. Holy #@$!! X_x
Then yesterday I played Zelda WW for about a minute. Double Holy @#$!! :o

Part of my shock is the crispness of the 3d environment--I always thought the 3D environment looked dumpy on PS. N64 was better, still a little blocky. No more. For me, as I haven't played a 3D game in years and arcades are essentially extinct, it's like a totally new gaming experience.

I never got anything past SNES because of price and to build a new library?? Sheesh. Plus I wasn't really grabbed by any PS games. It's too bad the N64 didn't catch on like the PS...I think it had the hardware to kick its ass. But I think Nintendo is really coming around with the Gamecube. I hope they just keep up the software support.
Although Vice City is pretty damn cool ;)

I usually prefer classic gaming, but when i see some modern games, i can´t believe the graphics or the sound!!!

Although I have seen some great titles for the Gamecube and PS2, the market in general is getting flooded with crap and I am sick of it. Just give me my Ninja Gaiden and six pack of mountain dew! Game on!

So true. If the game is fun and entertaining then I like it. I love my old games just as much as my new ones. While I do usually spend most of my gaming time playing recent stuff, I always find myself going back to the classics and in 20 years I'll be doing the same with the classics of today.

I enjoy both equally so I could not vote, but I will admit that I am amazed at how far the industry has come, if you would have told me 15 years ago that one day there wil be this game called "Steel Batallion" which will be played using a mammoth 40 plus button controller, I would have laughed and mocked at you like the little deviant kid I was..... well still am :devilish: So in other words Gaming was Good then and Gaming is Good now IMO

Games are games, and good games are good games. The benefit of classic games is that they've had a few years to prove themselves apart from the hype that surrounds the game's release which may or may not be warranted by the quality of the game itself.

It's all good for different reasons.
Older games are great for nostalgia and newer games are a great release. GTA3 kept me from offing a few people.
Good classic games did have that addictive aspect though. You don't really get that with most of the newer games.

I find the new games becoming more and more complicated. I have a difficult time learning all the moves. By the time I learn the controlls I am not interested in the game anymore.

Classic games relied on simple but addictive gameplay.

older seems to be better, they didnt seem to focus as much on graphics as they did on fun. look at bubble bobble and bionic commando, so simple and fun. whereas 90% of all modern games sux and end up in the $20 bin at EB after 6 months of its release.

if i need some eye candy like an xbox game or ps2 then ill go for that but nothing beats an arcade machine four of you standing around a vendetta four player cabinet just cannot be beaten i need to find the name of a game can somone tell me a good place to go to find it out please thanx nice forums on here cheers

I'm definitely with the majority of others here, I love classic games but I play just as much if not more of the modern stuff. It's like music - I can always enjoy the great ones but life goes on, and it's the thrill of discovery that has always made videogaming fun.

Well i like classic over modern gaming. Cause classic gaming was simple but fun and most games kept you hooked over and over again. My problem is when i finished a modern game i normally never play it again.. Classic games im still playing. Like i finished Super mario bros 1 till 3 loads of times but still play them..

I agree with many of the sentiments already posted...
older games are simple but addictive
I'd rather play DKJr over and over than replay Vice City
the cost being cheaper is nice (i usually wait until PC games are out and the price has dropped before getting them)
the newer games are definitely "eye candy" in a good way

but the bottom line is I like them both and will play whatever floats my boat

i love all games, but if i had to choose a favorite era it would be 16 bit.
