I just got Salamander for the Famicom today, and in the rush to see the expanded endings, I popped it in my Twin Famicom and tried the Konami Code. A lot. With no success whatsoever (and not just because the title screen is a bitch to contend with). So, is it (gasp) not in Salamander? Or is there a trick to get the damn thing to work right?
The code is not in the Famicom version. There is a trick to get 255 lives in Salamander, but I've never been able to get it to work.
Supposedly, you start a two-player game, have Player 1 lose two ships and Player 2 lose one ship, then line up the two ships so they're exactly overlapping each other (so it looks like one ship). Then you jam on the Player 1 A button rapidly and repeatedly as the ships(s) run into something. Since Player 1 can steal Player 2's lives by pressing A, if you hit the A button at just the right moment, you're supposed to be able to steal a life from Player 2 just after Player 2 loses his last life, but before the CPU realizes that Player 2 is out of lives. When this happens, Player 2's remaining lives become 255, because the 8-bit life counter doesn't recognize negative numbers and "rolls over" to 256.
This might be easier if you have a controller with a turbo function, but again, I'm not even sure if it really works at all.

Salamander has the Metroid style ending, in the credits you see the ship's pilot kneeling on the left. After the credits, he removes his helmet to reveal that he is a she!
