Ah, the carefree days of childhood. Who doesn't have fond memories? I know I do. I would occasionaly visit an arcade or two, I certainly had my favorite games. I remember playing some great computer games at home (I wish I could remember what kind of computer it was!) I remember playing an Atari 2600 at a friend's house. We played ET, it sucked just as much then as it does now. I recall my brother's friends down the street had a NES. Soon enough, we had one too. Games piled up and so did a SNES and a Genesis.

What I do not remember is when it all stopped. It must have been a slow turn from gaming heavily to hardly gaming at all. I did not miss the gaming. I never really thought of it. I had other interest and things which filled my time. I would pick up a controller once in a while, but not often at all. I played N64 a few times with friends.

I moved far away from home to go to college. I had to pick and choose what to take. For whatever reason, I took my video games and systems. My mom probably would have thrown them away if I did not take them. I moved into a nice place and unpacked. After months of living there, I hooked up the NES one night when I was bored. It was fun for a night, however I was not ready to go back yet. I probably went many more months before playing again. It was fun, for a while, but there was no passion there. It was there, I was there.

One night, I went to play the NES and it didn't work. It would just flash a pink colored screen. I tried and tried, but no luck. I was pretty upset considering I was hardly playing it any more. Here was a cherished piece of my childhood and it was now dead. I did some research, but did not find too much. I probably was no looking on the right places.

My girlfriend was interested in one of the Link games for N64, and she also liked Pokemon. We bought one and the slow journey back into gaming began. The N64 was fun. Zelda was fun. But it did not seem as much fun as I used to have with my Nintendo. I couldn't bear to throw out my NES, but it still wasn't working. I had been looking around at the local flea market for some games and maybe a working NES. I never did find all too much, but it was close to summertime. I had been spending a month or to with my parents. It was far from school.

My girlfriend and I made the trip to my parents house. Being back home was nice. Same town I grew up in. Talking to one of my oldest friends, we started talking about gaming. He mentioned about playstation and how great it was. I thought it sounded nice, but I was more interested in going back in time, not forward.

One day, I was ready and announced I was going to buy a Nintendo. There was a used game store. The next day I went and started buying back my childhood. I bought a Nintendo, some games and we would play all night long. It was almost like time travel. It felt great!

Since then, I have had a large passion for gaming. I have several systems. I still play the NES the most, but I am loving the Atari 2600 also. As for my first NES, I fixed it. It is proudly retired and resting on my shelf. I had kept everything, or close to it. The mystery computer is gone as well as an Intellivision. Those were my brother's though. Also, some where along the lines my SNES boxes vanished. I believe my mother threw them out. Aside from those items, they are all here now. I'll probably never know quite for sure why I stopped, but I do know how much I enjoy it now! I am collecting and playing in my game room. It is a great feeling.

I've never lost touch w/ my gaming roots. I've been an ATARI fan by nature, & can't think of any time period when I stopped playing or even didn't have at least one system hooked up. This story happened just last month!

My nephew said he'd never SEEN an Atari, so I took advantage of an upcoming family get-together. I thought he'd have fun w/ the XE Light Gun, so I brought that, my 7800, & some 2600/7800 carts along. He didn't make the party, but my older brother's girlfriend & I took turns at Barnyard Blaster. Before long, everyone young & old, were gathered around the modern 27" TV marvelling at & thoroughly enjoying the Atari "antiquity". At one point the kids were shouting so loud about who would play next I knew it was a huge hit! They asked about games, the hardware, where they could get one NOW, etc. My brother's gf even said she'd start looking for them at garage sales for me. My brother ended up playing until the party ended- we were the last ones to leave! (He was the main buyer of 2600 games in our family 20 years ago, but I never considered him a gamer).

It was a great time & I plan to either leave a system at my parents' place or bring one along when we visit!
