View Full Version : How much of a demand is there for a Classic gaming wiki?

I need to know, because I am requesting one from wikia

Also, who would be willing to contribute? I think it would be a great database for everything retro.

There could be a huge demand for it. Just make sure something like that isn't already going somewhere else.

Have you done much searching in this regard?

Yes, I have. I am sure there isn't such a thing going on now. I have already submitted a request to wikia. If you'd like, you could post support on it.

Great, but the request needs to be accepted first. If people support it, then the better chance it will be accepted.

The request is here (http://requests.wikia.com/wiki/Wikiclassics)

You might need to sign up to wikia.com first, but if you do, then you wont need to sign up for the CG wiki to contribute.

You can post support by putting {{support}} in the "Comments from the Community" section. Although you might need to sign up for wikia.

This can be a huge success, I just know it.

Someone else has pledged support.

I'm sure this Wiki will work.

I think the idea would be that the classic gaming wiki would be more in-depth, covering topics and info that the editors over at the "vanilla" Wikipedia would deem irrelevant or of little use to the average person reading the articles.

I, personally, would like to see a nice collection of information on the Neo Geo arcade machines. That knowledge seems to be scattered across various websites and forums.

Wikipedia's also often wrong when it comes to older games. I think it's a good idea.

We now have a wiki.

WikiClassics (http://classicpcgames.wikia.com) is finally created!

Feel free to sign up and contribute. This is going to be such a huge help to everyone trying to identify a game, or trying to get info.

If anyone knows how to edit wiki's, I need templates. I also need moderators.

No offense... but ClassicPCGames? Why not ClassicGames? The PC thing makes me think of old PC games only.

You see, when my request got accepted, they just made me the admin of an abandoned Wiki, thus resulting in that url. I have requested to get it changed, though.

I've been working on a Video Game Specific Encyclopedia for over a year now. It started as a private database for myself which I used when Blogging / Work but decided to take it public and have it be a public open resource.

Feel free to check it out at http://www.theconsoler.com.

It is definitely in its infancy at the moment, I've spent the better part of the year trying to get a solid foundation going before I even asked for contributors. Regretfully my job took first priority over the site, but now that the game is closer to launch I've been able to get a bit more done on the site.

I think a 100% Video Game Specific online resource is a big need in the community, one free of ads, or restrictions, that embraces Video Game culture and not just cold hard facts like Wikipedia.

Very nice. The layout is good and you've already have a lot of work put into it.

I had actually thought about doing this some time ago, but obviously I need to be focusing on a few series right now. I'll take a look at it though. I don't know a whole lot about Wiki templates, but I do know formatting.

Is 1997 the cut-off for all games and not just PC games?

It looks like a huge undertaking; I'm not sure I could ever be a contributor but I'm sure I would enjoy the site.

Threads merged instead of having two separate ones. You can rename it if you like.

Thank you, I've been doing what I can to set a nice foundation.

My proudest feat is managing to get the covers over every Nintendo Power from 1988 to Present scanned in and archived with articles for every issue. Here's an example of Nintendo Power Issue 2 (http://www.theconsoler.com/wiki/index.php/Nintendo_Power_002), which is what I'll eventually be doing for every issue. Breaking it down by the table of contents, so we can all go back and re-live that issue. Basically just summarizing the big stories of each issue so we can remember what we 'new' each issue.

If you need any help or need to use some of The Consoler's Templates just let me know and I'll help you implement them on your site. I've been working on a lot of templates for Characters, Video Game films, Video game magazines, and Games themselves that you could use to build your site as well.

Thanks, I work on it whenever I get some free time outside of work and will continue to do so. Thanks for the feedback.

As for the guy who asked what a wiki was, A wiki is a website that anyone can edit or contribute to. So if you see something that you know about, you can add to the website and share your expertise / knowledge.

A great way to share video game knowledge with other fanatics where everyone can see it and reference it.

btw. Love your avatar, I just got a mint never before used version of that game (Swedish Erotica: beat em' and eat em')
