View Full Version : Found a Neo Geo... Should I go back and buy it?

I just went to a pawn and found a Neo-Geo home console w/ hookups and joystick for $99. They were also selling 4 games (Samurai Showdown, Baseball Stars, Magician Lord and Ninja Combat) for $20 each.
They also had a boxed Sega CD Action Set/Pack for $80 as well as a unboxed 3DO with 4 games for $50.
Should I go back and get the Neo Geo + games?
How much do those consoles/games usually go for?

Important to clarify, is this a Neo Geo AES (Cartridge system) or a Neo Geo CD. If it's the AES for $100 I'd jump all over it. Also you might be able to work a deal by adding some games - perhaps offer $120 for the system and 2 games.

Do you think I should pick up the games too?

An AES goes for about $200 on ebay in good shape. Maybe even slightly less ($180). The games are relatively cheap games so I would probably not bother with them for reselling unless you can pick them up cheap. If you want to pick the system up to play, I would probably pick up the games, though. Baseball Stars is an AMAZING game on the Neo geo. Samurai Showdown is a great classic fighter and well worth picking up. Never played ninja combat and thought magician lord was OK.

I would pick up the 3DO and 4 games if I were you. You should be abel to double your money on that I would think .
Not to sure about teh neo geo games, I don't think , if all you want to is sell them, that you would make much if they are $20 each.

Get the games too if you can, $20 is cheap to begin with especially if they are complete. The naysayers will tell you that you can find the games cheaper but remember that's before shipping and whatnot - in this case the games are right there in front of you. As for the 3DO, that's a bit much - about twice in fact. 3DO games are cheap, a bare system is worth about $20 (depends on model). However when bought online 3DO's are heavy and expensive to ship, which again comes into play.

definately go for the neo geo system. I would buy it at that price myself, but I wouldn't be re-selling it. The only thing that sucks is all the good games are pricey on the AES.

One thing is making me rethink buying it.... I bought a PS3 2 weeks ago. $500 there, $150-200 for the Neo w/ games. I dunno :|

If you do not buy it, some one else will.
I would hate to see some scalper buy it than put it up on ebay with a $700 buy it now :grrr:

Well put it this way, with that Neo Geo AES at least you'd have something to play while waiting for the A list PS3 titles. ;)

Unless you really just don't have the money, get it. I have always wanted one and that is possibly the best price I have ever seen on one.

If you're worried about the price in the long run, I would skip the AES. Those games are a great start, but if you're looking to buy some of the later games like the Metal Slugs, the more popular KOF's or Last Blades, you're going to have to shell out a LOT more green.
But if all you're going to do is stick to those older games, and don't get me wrong I love all the games that you mentioned, then go for it. You'll be hard pressed to find a better price for that system and games.

assuming it works. Many Neo Geo AES games can be had cheaply ($50 or less) if all you want is to play them. Collector's copies and the rarer titles cost considerably more. Still, it's a great system.

I have to know where you got a 3do online for $20. Go look on ebay and find me one for $20, please, please, do. Not a single auction I have seen has been under $75.

I said it depends on model. If you're patient there are 3DO's to be found in the $20 range before shipping. Those $50+ auctions almost always contain a healthy amount of complete games and additional controllers. A basic GoldStar or FZ-1 shows up every few weeks in the $20 range.

True to that. This is why I haven't bought one though, because they're always sold locally $60 because eBay auctions say so (and they won't give me a game with it!). eBay isn't even a good source to get game systems anyhow as the condition isn't always on par plus you're bidding against others.
As for the Neo-Geo AES, grab that bad boy! $100 is like a steal, you could use the money you saved to modify it. :)

I would definetly go back and pick it up. The only time I saw one here was at at an over priced game stor last summer. It was boxed complete but $1000 is a little much I think not to mention he also had Baseball stars for $100. :(

I picked up my 3DO FZ-1, barebones, for $10 at a local indie video game reseller. He didn't even know he had it in his dust-ridden retro inventory. Two lots of mixed games and controllers on eBay gave me five games, a pair of FZ-JP2X controllers, and a single FZ-JP1X controller for less than $15 total between the two. Most times when you come across a 3DO in the wild at a yard sale or similar the seller usually wants to dump it for whatever they can get since it fell off the planet.
I will admit that coming across the 3DO when I did seemed lucky to me since I had just bit the bullet and bought a copy of Pretty Soldier Sailormoon S.

Well I turned it down. I went back after work and took a look at the console. It was beat up pretty bad and felt like the power switch was loose. Upon asking about a warranty if it was messed up, they hooked it up so I could see it. It took him 2-3 times of cleaning the cart before the game booted up. He bumped the console and it turned off. Once that happened I knew I would have to pass.
The joystick was cracked where the cable goes into the controller and the colored wires of the cable were exposed as well.
I didn't want to spend $200 on something that was that finnicky. Hopefully I will find another sometime.

A- I can't blame you, if it was beat to hell I wouldn't buy it either.
B- Don't count on it, you have a better chance of hitting a $100,000 lotto ticket than you do finding a good shape, decent priced Neo Geo AES in the wild.

That stinks. I'm sure he will sell it to someone, though.
It does give you the opportunity to go back and ask about the 3DO. If it was a good condition FZ-10, I'd buy that for $50 right now if it were near me. To my knowledge, the Sega CD ain't worth all of that money ($80) so I'd pass on that.

That does suck. Don't blame you at all tho. I have had to pass on many great finds due to the poor condition. It is really amazing too. You would think whoever originally purchased that system would have kept it in mint condition....considering how much it was back then! It was like the Marantz of videogame consoles :)

Wow, a Neo Geo?
I remember when I found an Odyssey 2 for 15 bucks. The store had about 50% of the games for 99 cents each.

The 350 was a FZ-1 or whatever, the first model by Panasonic. The 4 games that were included were FIFA and some other games that weren't anything special. The Sega CD was actually $60, but it was just the hardware in the box, no manuals or anything.

I have to say if it was me in that situation, after having so many problems I probably would have thrown out a low-ball price just for the heck of it. Sometimes when a bunch of things go wrong like that the sellers are more likely to accept a low offer in light of all the "problems." If he wasn't super knowledgable about Neo prices maybe he would have sold it to you for $50?

Exactly what I paid for mine (although it IS boxed, etc.). For $99 I would drag little old ladies down dark alleys....if I didn't have the cash on hand, that is.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It's so problematic just to test out, see if he'll take $99 for the console and all the games. Honestly, I still would have bought it, regardless of it's condition. I've always wanted to find a Neo-Geo in the wild. In fact, just today a woman at a classic game store was telling me how she came across one in a book store with 'around 50 games' for $200. I'd kill to have that kind of find. Really, I'd kill for a stick of gum. I've worked retail for a long time, it wouldn't take much. :)
I've got two Panasonic 3DO consoles, one was $20 and one was $5. (I also bought a bunch of Goldstar joypads, boxed and new, at my local flea market for 25¢ each, along with a couple SNES-to-3DO adapters!) I wouldn't pay more than $20 for one, since there's a much lower percentage of great games to lousy games on that system in my opinion compared with other 32 bit machines.

I still would have tried to buy the whole shebang for less, $150 at most. I'd outright refuse to pay full asking but, I wouldn't have left without it if they would move on the price. Those were all great games to start with too!

I'll never forget the day I found a Neo in the wild for $50. I had two games, a memory card and two controllers. I was BROKE at the time. I mean fucking flat-assed broke. This was some time between '96 and '98. It was at a flea market that happened monthly, since it was really a car show that went on the last Sunday of each month and folks just happen to treat it as a bit of a flea market too.
Anyway, the guy said he'd be there next month, and sure enough, he was, and he still had the Neo. I was still broke as a hobo mofo but had spoken to a friend of mine who lived in Georgia (I live in NH) who wanted it and sent me a check for $70 to cover shipping and the cost of the Neo.
I talked the guy down to $40 and he took it! I know, find of the decade, huh? Anyway, the shipping was $17, so I made $13 on the deal. I call it a heartbroken dude's finder's fee. Hah! Man, was I sad to see it go. It was just bad timing. There's only been a couple of very short periods in my life where I was that broke, so that system shoulda been mine, but at least it was sent to the next best thing, being one of my best friends.
I believe the two games were Baseball Stars and Nam '75. My brother and I had a good time playing them for 2 days until I had to send it off.
BTW Kev, if you are reading this, I never mentioned the $13 to you, so, sorry, but I'm still keeping it! BWA HA HA.
I knew such a deal would never happen again, but I just couldn't bear the thought of someone else snagging that and making huge $ on it. Kev still has it, so it's all good. And yes, this is the same Kev I went to the NWC with for those familiar with the story.
