Pretty weird, huh?

Reminds me...Some of you may remember a thread here from a couple years back where someone pointed out that there is indeed a Japanese mushroom with a white stem and an orange body with large red spots on it. This mushroom is a hallucinogen, but does not contain psilocybin, as the hallucinogenic mushroom that are most common in the US and such do. These red, white, and orange shrooms are something else, but I guess they are considered poisonous, though they don't kill you or anything. I guess it makes you trip while sweating buckets. But anyway, I wonder what the hell this green and white one is! Never seen one of these!

I am convinced that Miyamoto conceived of SMB while high on mushrooms, or at the very least, he knew what certain species did and incorporated them into the game.

There's no sign of it on the page, but that 1-up mushroom was added to thinkgeek's site on April 1st...2006, I think. It looks to me like a plain old button mushroom that someone took a green Sharpie to. The green and white mushroom exists only as a Luigi-esque palette swap of the red and white mushroom, unfortunately. Mushrooms come in all sorts of colors, but actually green is one of the only colors I don't think I've ever seen. At least not on a gilled mushroom of that type.

But the regular super mushroom is definitely based on the real mushroom, Amanita muscara, like you said. Though that's not just a Japanese mushroom--it grows all over the place. I live in Northern California and I see them all the time in the Fall.

That image of a red mushroom with white spots is very common in popular culture, though, predating Super Mario Bros by centuries if not millenia. I wouldn't even assume that Miyamoto knew it was Amanita muscara he was putting in his game. The super mushroom in Super Mario Bros is obviously taken from the mushroom Alice eats in Alice in Wonderland which is also probably Amanita muscara--or at least it's always illustrated that way. It's probably from one of those illustrations that Miyamoto got the design for the mushrooms in SMB.

I had always assumed an association between Mario's developers and 'shrooms. I'm not saying this just because of the involvement of the mushrooms in the game, but also because of the patterns all over the screen with each game. Not to mention the fact of the distortion of size on Super Mario 3. It just seems so obvious at times. I'm glad I'm not the only one that is assuming this.

As for this... Why? Maybe it says something about Mario's actual intentions with the Princess.

Indeed. It would appear Lewis Carroll was partial to a good smoke and dabbled with acid. He could also write pretty damn good kiddy books whilst absolutely off his twat too. Hardcore.

And for those wondering, Amanita Muscaria is probably better know to party peoples as Fly Agaric. Stay away kids, not good stuff.

Indeed. I had a feeling that there was something wrong when the shroom had two eyes and the coloring wasn't consistent.

it prolly would give you a death trip like amanitas muscaria does... you may have never heard the scientific name for them, but you've seen them in popular fiction of all sorts, from Alice in Wonderland to The Smurfs to Mario games... they're the red capped 'shrooms with the white polka dots on 'em... and they're a very powerful hallucinogen that's practically worshipped by some people in some areas where they grow wild... even the reindeer in these areas eat them... and just to give you an idea of how fanatical these people are about these 'shrooms, you can trip on 'em by drinking the piss of someone or something else that ate them... so yes there are alot of people drinking reindeer piss just to take a trip on these 'shrooms... and they drink each other's piss or even their own piss to go on this sacred death trip... like crystal meth, you can extend your high on it by drinking your own piss... and no I'm not making all this up... it's not an April fool's joke... look it up... do some research on it, like I did... there's a reason why the red cap 'shrooms with the white polka dots are so entrenched in our culture, and have been for ages... they even have a link to Santa Claus through the magic reindeer...

Shit, Iron D. Now we know why the reindeers fly. Damn.

Ho Ho Ho.

April Fools joke, ok. I figured someone just put the eyes on it and jokingly wrote about it's powers, but figured they were making a joke about a real mushroom. Ok, so I fell for it. Cool thread anyway.

I think when I said this grows in Japan, I was confusing it with some other hallucinogenic mushrooms that are native to Japan, but I can not remember them just now. But yes, now that I've been reminded, I do recall that these grow in lots of places, with many different variations across the world.

As for Lewis Carroll doing acid, I didn't think it was invented yet. He may have ate the fungus that was later synthetically enhanced into acid, though. Some have speculated that the Salem "witches" were high on this stuff, hence their erratic behaviors (tainted grain). Or rather, I should say, the little girls who were pointing fingers at everyone were high on the stuff when they claimed everyone else were witches. I never really looked into this, though. Hmmm, maybe urban legend, but I'm too lazy to look right now. Maybe I should say *real* legend, since it was 400 years ago.

Aye, I have also read speculation about a connection between drugs and medieval European witchcraft, but I too am too lazy to look up a reference right now (though I will direct you to Marvin Harris's entertaining Cows, Pigs, Wars, and Witches (http://www.amazon.com/Cows-Pigs-Wars-Witches-Riddles/dp/0679724680/)).

All the Salem witch burning were due to Ergot mold. It grows naturally on Rye bread, which the women were making and handling. So all those poor women were killed 'cos they were off their nuts and nobody at that time new the reason why.

And yes, Mr Carroll wasn't literally necking trips when I referred to 'acid' but plants with naturally occurring hallucinogens. LSD-25 wasn't synthesized until the late 30s.

But still, acid/hallucinogens in any form aren't good stuff. I don't care if you're necking trips, liquid acid, mescaline, mushies or microdots it's not good shit. And certainly not crystaline LSD suspended in jelly. Stay away kids....
