This is for those of us who play many rpgs. In console rpgs, do you often rename your party by names of your choosing, or do you leave them by their default names?

When I start a new RPG game for the first time, I often leave the name at default but when I restart the game, I rarely use the default names.

I always leave them the same. Partly because I like to leave the names the way they are for the story, and partly because I'm lazy.

I almost always change the names of the characters in RPG's, but usually they are named for quite silly reasons.
For example:
Elves are always named Bob.....Bob the Elf.
A troll fighter is always named Mr. Wooley. (Anyone know where that name comes from? 8-)
Priests are always named Sean.
There's more but I always seem to get more into the game when i do this. Almost as if the same characters have gone through every RPG that I've ever played.

I always leave the names at default. An old friend of mine would give all the characters girls names all the time, except for the requisite cute character (mog, cait sith, etc) whom he would always name "CHODE".

I like to usually name my character something like "YOU ASS" or "you fucker" (if possible). So when people talk to me it's something like "can you retrieve the sword of light YOU ASS?", or "Hey you fucker, they say there's a dragon in the cave to the northwest". etc. You get the idea... tons of magical possibilities.
Otherwise, for external party members.(like say.. Final Fantasy III U.S.) I'd name the chicks something like "Toots", "Cunt", "H0". The guys to "fruitcake", "dufus" and "faggy" etc. It works great for otherwise melodramatic scenes to have faggy and toots trying to address each other seriously. LOL
However, when I don't do that.. I sometimes use the name Odin (in homage to Phantasy Star). And I like to name my white wizards "Gandalf". :P

I almost always leave them as they are, unless it's a REALLY DUMB NAME. (My lead character will not be called Bob, Bill, Joe, or Eric for example (no offense to anyone with those names, but if you're going to be a swordsman, you may want to change that.)

The only console RPG I have is Lord of the Dungeon, and it didn't have any default names. So, I call the party "Dutchess Adepts" ( Poughkeepsie college reference...).

I sometimes do both myself. When i was younger I would change their names alot but now if/when I do I make the names kinda meaningful.

If it's a single character, I use the name "Gynx." I just always liked it for a quick-n-easy medieval fantasy name.
But if it's a whole FF-type party, I like to give them all themed names. My favorite was the party with members named "ASS," "BUTT," "SPHINC," "RUMP," and "CHEEK."
Yup, real maturity in action. My wife just walked in, saw the stats at the bottom, rolled her eyes and left without saying a word.

It all depends. Modern RPG's ususally have pretty good names, but older ones sometimes gave your characters names like "Kevin", "Bob", "Fred", "Bill", which really killed the fantasy mood. I mean having a valiant knight named Bob just doesn't cut it.
Dragon Warrrior was the worst at this. The predetermined names were chosen based off the name you put in for your character. I always got the lamest names for my party memebers (like Kim and Stan).

If I have to name a character, it's always Maxwell, but I keep the defaults whenever I can for story reasons.

I just leave the names at the default because i'm too lazy to make new names for them. :-D

Give them serial numbers, or Borg type names.
"Hey 2of4, what's 1of4's problem?"
