Hopefully Dragon Quest 5 and 6 will make it to the states.
The only way for a North American gamer to play them in the past was by using an emulator and download the roms.

I could've sworn I was playing Dragon Quest 6 in my SNES awhile back and that I was located in North America. ;P
All kidding aside, that's awesome news. Maybe it'll bring down the price of Dragon Warrior 4 as well.

I expect that all console RPG fans have played DQ4 for the NES, but for those of you who haven't played DQ5, it is by far my personal favorite of the series.
DQ5 is kinda like an SNES version of pokemon, and DQ6 is kinda like an SNES version of Final Fantasy Tactics. Mixed with the Dragon Quest battle system and setting of course. They've both been fan-translated into English, but it's great that the DS versions will bring these games to a whole new English audience who didn't know anything about these games.

More JRPG's are never a bad thing...squinting to see the action on the tiny DS screen might be.

I've always been bummed that we didn't get the PS1 version of Dragon Quest IV. An english DS version of the game would totally make up for it. God, I loved that game...haven't played it in over a decade, so no idea if I'd still feel the same, but good god did it treat me right.
Not sure if V is my cup of tea, but I had a pretty fun time with the 6th game as well. I'd be down for giving remakes of either a shot in a heartbeat.

That's my main beef, too :( I hate having to hold the DS so close. I'm really looking forward to seeing DS emulation mature to fix the screen-size issue, though I'd probably have to buy a wacom tablet to really get the most out of it. Considering all of TabletPC's functions have been migrated into Vista, that probably wouldn't be a very bad move anyway, though. I love me some Windows TabletPC.

Actualy, I've been playing DQ 6 on my SNES for some time. No problems at all.
I'm not so concerned about how it will look on the DS as they will be re-makes but more if they will even be released in the states. We got the FF games on the GBA, but Nintendo published them for it. If SquareEnix doesnt want to release them here it's up to Nintendo. If they decide not to, well, that's it. SquareEnix's already shown they dont care to handle re-releases themselves and will be more then willing to either cancle it or have someone else publish it. After DQ IV, I'll not hold my breath.

It's not the tiny text that's the issue. It's trying to fit console-sized action on a dinky little screen. I'd rather play games on a TV. Handheld consoles have their place (and games), but full length, A-list, epic RPG's shouldn't be one of them (i.e. DQ9).

I'd recomend getting the GBC release for DQ1+2. 2's still one of my favorites of the series. 3 shouldnt be that expensive for the GBC either. 7 and 8 didnt impress me as much though 7 had more then enough extra content to put the game well over 100 hours of gameplay. Plus it had a decent story as well.

I believe SquareEnix begs to disagree. It'll be interesting alone to see the sales figures for it once it hits Japan. As it'll be the first in the series to start on a handheld vs console it should prove interesting. It may not be the 100+ hour epic journey thru 8-10 towns we've come to know, but it could very well be the best.
As much as I'm waiting for the news of a domestic release on these 3 games, I'm hoping 4 swords gets a release as well. It's sales numbers so far have been rather nice and something to show North American Wii owners as well as European something we've been missing so far. A RPG game.

I don't mind my RPGs being on handhelds. My eyes aren't bad, but I can understand why some have trouble with seeing the text.
Perhaps the next DS will have TV connectivity? I doubt it, but you never know.
But yeah, I like my handheld RPGs.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker just came out this week and it's a pretty good placeholder for DQ9, which I heard was supposed to be multiplayer and online but with the same battle system. Oh well, DQ is great.

A wireless PC controller and output from your PC to TV screen could do wonders. (:

I love the DW/DQ Series... could you tell?
If they port them to the DS, it would be great. I have 4 for the NES, its fun. Although, I havent beaten it and i rarely play it because it was the holy grail for me in the condition i was able to get it.
I picked up SFC copies NCIB of DQ 5/6 and a PS2 (Japan Release only) of DQ 5. Id love to play them in english.
I liked DQ Heroes: Rocket Slime, and I hope the new monsters game is just as great.
Will the re-releases make prices of the other games go down? Probably no, bc thier rarity doesnt change and usually re-releases make the demand for the original higher. (Or, so I hope).
If a DQ9 comes out, you bet your sweet rear ill be ordering 2. One to play, one to keep sealed away for my collection, just wish I had the foresight for this when I was 10!

I'm gonna go ahead and agree with the "screen/resolution is too damn small" issue. I've played DQ8 and it was fucking perfect. Lately, I've been playing Dragon Quest Monsters, and the whole thing just seems so scaled down. Some of it is pretty impressive (the size of a couple of the maps surprised me), but I would still prefer to see this game on a higher-resolution screen so the artistic style could be better realized.
DQ 5 is already on the PS2 in Japan since a couple years ago, I doubt we'll ever get it.

I am pretty psyched about this. I really don't have a problem with the screen size (I usually hold the DS at arms length and can read everything fine). I can only hope that they find someone familiar with the old Dragon Warrior games to do the translation. I played through most of DQM: Joker, and was disappointed how they removed all the monster names from the old games and replaced them with generic names (bubble slime instead of babble, wtf). DQ4 is one of my favourite RPGs, and I never fully got through the SFC ones. But really, I can't wait for a date for DQ9.

I'm not too familiar with the DQ series: is DQ IV going to be the same as Dragon Warrior IV for the NES, or are the numbers off a la the FF series? Either way, this is awesome news as I've always wanted to see why exactly this series was so huge in Japan. If DQ 8 is any indication these games are going to be amazing.

The game is already translated into English, they're just taking their sweet time releasing it here. The Japanese version of the DS game has a full English script (albeit containing lots of garbage text) save for the Immigrant Town sidequest that's accessible via an Action Replay code.

I'll agree with the earlier comments about "too bad it's for DS". i know why they are doing it. But I've played both DQ8 and DQM Joker. Level 5 makes awesome cel shaded graphics, really brings the Toriyama style to life. But Joker suffered from the power and resolution drop. The textures are very low res and the whole thing just seems like it could have been that much better with more resolution. I'm not that big of a graphics whore, but DQ8 is fuckin beautiful and I'll be not so happy if they never bring the series back to a console.

I think releasing them on DS is actually genious. I am not sure the exact processing power on the DS, but it has to be equivelent to or better than the SFC... so a port would be simple enough given that you could do it with out a complete redesign of the charecters and maps to accomodate the "new" consoles.
They could have released them on Sega Game Gear for all I care... I would still be getting them!

So, who plans on getting DQIV when it comes out in 3 weeks? I certainly am, and looking at the trailer at the official site just makes me look even more forward to it. And in the meantime, I will be getting Dragon Quest Heroes on Saturday (for $10!) - I know it's not quite the same and all but that oughta keep me busy (when I'm not playing Space Invaders Extreme).
I wonder when DQV and VI are coming out, though? The site only says "coming soon" with no precision on the launch date (before the end of the year, I hope!).

I plan on picking it up. The problem is finding time to play it. I haven't even picked up FFTA2 for the DS yet...which I've been eagerly awaiting.
My policy for the last few years has been to finish whatever portable games I'm in the middle of before starting new ones. Right now I'm still grinding through the end of FFIII and halfway done with FFVII: Crisis Core. When those are done, I'll pick up DQ4 and Tactics for sure.
Hopefully, DQ5 and 6 can wait until next year.

DQ Heroes is a great game, lots of fun. Although the game is a bit short, it's definately worth $10!
Edit: Oh nevermind, just read some previous posts, looks like DQ V & VI are confirmed.

I can't wait for DQ IV. I got about 60-75% of the way through the NES version before trying out some other game, and by the time I was finished with it I had no idea where I left off in DQ. Even GameFAQs was no help, so I eventually just gave up on the game. I'll definitely finish it this time.

I just finished FFIII (DS) a couple days ago. I've been slowly playing it on and off for since it was released. There are too many A-list RPG's been coming out on the DS and it's hard for me to play two RPG's simultaneously. I had to finish it so I could start DQIV with a clean slate.

DQ IV is awesome, although the graphics are only slightly improved from the bad ugly DQ VII on PS1.
The sprites have one frame of animation more in each direction as far as I can tell, and monsters are now animated.
Still the 3D graphics remain pretty bad, and still the characters only circle through their walking animations; but that was to be expected the moment the first screenshots were released and does not change the fact that the game is simply fun and I have spent 30 hours with it by now.
Still, it could have been better visually; the DS is stronger than a PlayStation (to refer to the idea it might be as strong as an SNES), and even on the PlayStation DQ VII was a graphical disaster: but SE goes the cheapo way with the DQ remakes. They could have used the DQM: Joker engine instead.
At least we Europeans got the game before the US for a change, usually it is the other way around. But it could have been released months ago, seeing that the translations were all nearly complete on the japanese ROM from November 2007...

Graphics isn't everything in a game, especially not a game that was originally released 15 years ago...

Lady Jaye

After playing a bit with the game, here are my impressions so far:
Yes, graphically, it's not the best-looking game on the DS, but it does feel moreso like a port of the PS1 remake. It adds to the old-school feel.
The use of local dialects (so far, Scottish) is ok, but if I didn't watch Trainspotting, I wouldn't know that ken = know and bairn = kids. This is why I switched my DS to French and voilą! the French translation is impeccable without using any kind of regional dialects.
I do find the way to access menus somewhat counter-intuitive. We're used to access such menus via Start and Select, not the action buttons. On the other hand, it's great that the map is omnipresent when you're traveling in the overworld.
Just like in Dragon Quest VIII, there's day and night in the game, which influences the monster selection and the people in the villages.
All in all, once you get used to the little quirks of the game, it's actually pretty good, while still being a classic turn-based RPG. A gamer whose experience of the Dragon Quest series is limited to DQVIII would have no problem adapting to this one.
