I have a generic PC gamepad (circa 2001) that didn't come with a install disk or anything...it's one of those six button pads that has the option of connecting through a gameport or a USB pigtail. Vista doesn't seem to recognize this at all when I plug it in. Is there a program or utility that I can use to make use of this gamepad? Thanks.

I think you can just use generic drivers, but then again idk about using it with vista.

Can't. When they created vista they took lots of drivers XP had contained within and threw them away. Probably another tactic to get people to buy new forget old.

It's probably not hid compliant, which means it needs custom drivers that probably don't exist for vista.

Microsoft's attempt to sell more of their PC Controllers.

Luckily they are good controllers.

Does Vista work with legacy 15-pin joysticks at all? That might be the problem. Some arrogant engineer may have decided that "nobody uses those anymore".

I have a strong suspicion that the above is true.....

Yes, 15-pin gameports are gone in Vista. USB ports still work of course, but it must be HID-capable.

I'm sure there's a way to make it work, at least with limited functionality... I haven't had a legacy device fail to install and work with Vista yet... at least not with too much trouble to get it installed and working... have you tried to install it through the hardware wizard? that should walk you through it all... even if Vista doesn't detect the device, you should be able to tell it what port the device is connected to, and it should walk you through the rest from there... if not, I would be very surprised... Vista is the most user-friendly OS that I've ever used... it's what every OS should be like for the PC illiterate...

Is that a gameport to USB adapter? Do you have a gameport on your PC? If so, remove the adapter and try this.

With some support here.

I haven't tried this myself, as I'm on XP.
