View Full Version : How hard would a complete Resident Evil collection be?

Since I have neither the time, nor the patience, nor the bank to collect an entire system, I'm setting my sights a little differently. I'm thinking game series, or cross-platform subsets of games. Since I'm a huge fan of the Resident Evil series, I figure I might as well start there. I've already got almost the entire cube set except for the Pure Evil box and the Chainsaw controller. How difficult do you guys think it would be to collect every US Resident Evil game out there?

Ninja edit: I wasn't sure exactly where to place this, as the series covers both classic and modern gaming.

Probably not that hard. Since the RE franchise was pretty much the PS1's pre-FF7 killer app, and all the versions on other consoles seem to be plentiful. The Dreamcast versions of RE2, 3 may be your toughest finds..

Hell, I even have a NTSC-J copy of RE:CV on the Dreamcast, which I really wasn't even looking for - I just stumbled upon it in a used game store. And I only paid $15 for it, two years ago. And I also have the longboxed PS1 version of RE1.

the longbox version of RE is supposed to be kind of hard to find, but not impossible. it doesn't seem like it would be that hard to get a complete set since it's fairly new (and popular) franchise.

You should go for a complete Biohazard game set since the game originates from Japan. They even changed the name in the West!

It would probably be easy, but could cost a bit if you really want EVERYTHING.

Depends if you go for crazy limited release editions like the Biohazard Box set from the time of RE4's release (PS2 title + soundtrack releases), and there's also the PC games (an original copy of RE is not the easiest thing to find).

I was going to say the same thing. PC version of RE1, 2 and 3 are probably going to be the hardest titles to track down.

You can find the long box RE anywhere, but I have only ran across a few jewel case versions.

... you're kidding, right? RE 2 Platinum and RE3: Nemesis are incredibly common and aren't worth more than five bucks each on eBay.

The only one that costs a bit more is RE1. CD + manual + jewel case copies go for $20 on eBay.

Just to clarify, do you just want each individual game, or every different release variant of the game? For example, do you want all the RE1 releases for PS1 (including long box, director's cut, etc) and the Saturn release of RE1? Or is just one copy of RE1 enough? And would you need the GC, PS2, and Wii versions of RE4, or is one enough?

Either one shouldn't be too hard and should be quite fun-- the constant popularity of the series makes it so the games are not too hard to find in the wild, especially if you have a solid classic game store in your area. However, finding each variant would obviously be the harder of the two and, even if you found most items, you would probably eventually have to resort to eBay for at least a couple of things if you were really desperate for a complete set.

This is actually something I've been slowly working on since 2003. I'd actually have it complete if I weren't buying other games. The funny thing is, all I really need is $100, maybe $150 tops., to buy what I don't already have.

Resident Evil Zero
Resident Evil (Saturn)
Resident Evil: Director's Cut Dual Shock
Resident Evil Rebirth
Resident Evil 2 (PSX)
Resident Evil 2 (N64)
Resident Evil 2 (Dreamcast)
Resident Evil 2 (GameCube)
Resident Evil: Nemesis (PSX)
Resident Evil: Nemesis (GameCube)
Resident Evil: CODE: Veronica (Dreamcast)
Resident Evil: CODE: Veronica Complete (PS2)
Resident Evil: CODE: Veronica Complete (GameCube)
Resident Evil 4 Collector's Edition (GameCube)
Resident Evil 4 Premium Edition (PS2)
Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition
Resident Evil Outbreak
Resident Evil Outbreak #2

Here's what I don't own:

Resident Evil (PSX Long Box)
Resident Evil (PSX Jewel Case)
Resident Evil (PC)
Resident Evil: Director's Cut (w/ Resident Evil 2 Demo)
Resident Evil: Deadly Silence
Resident Evil 2 Dual Shock
Resident Evil 2 (PC)
Resident Evil 2 (Game.com)
Resident Evil: Nemesis (Dreamcast)
Resident Evil: Nemesis (PC)
Resident Evil: Gun Survivor
Resident Evil: Gun Survivor 2: CODE: Veronica (Import)
Resident Evil: Dead Aim (Gun Survivor 4)
Resident Evil 4 (PC)
Resident Evil Gaiden (Game Boy Color)

Of course, I don't understand why the Dreamcast versions of RE2, and RE: Nemesis skyrocketed in price recently. I bought RE2 for Dreamcast back in 2003 for only $12 or so. Now it's at least $30, and I need to rebuy (My Claire disc locks up in the laboratory). RE: Nemesis is even higher than RE2. :(

The single rarest RE game, is the uncut USA Saturn version. Very few copies of it are uncut, whereas all the others are censored ala PSX version. There's no way to tell which one it is, unless you put the disc in the system, and watch the opening FMV. So you could end up wasting a lot of money trying to track it down, and end up with tons of copies of the Saturn version.

I'm thinking every variation of each game. I'll keep it US releases for now, but if I find it too easy then I may branch out to the Biohazard family.

What's different about the opening FMV in the uncut/censored versions?

Gorey bits.

In the censored version, the first zombie you meet munches on a guy and nothing is shown. In the uncensored one, the dead guy's head FALLS TO THE GROUND and half of his face is torn off.

I'd say it would be rather easy to put together a Resident Evil set...not so many games, and not many variants at all (as compared to series like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Zelda, etc.). Btw...I have a Pure Evil box set, if you're interested.

Fuck. I shouldn't have put off buying DC RE: Nemesis for all these years. 3 years ago I was in no rush "Eh it'll still be $10-$15 down the road..."

Guess not now? Oh well.

And regarding the Saturn thing, I've never heard that before. I thought in general all copies of Saturn RE were a bit more bloody than regular PSX RE... can someone confirm?

Only 5,000 of the Claire Dreamcasts, and 2,000 of the S.T.A.R.S. Dreamcasts were produced. Good luck! :)

With the PS1, how many versions of the first Resident Evil were there? I don't mean the packaging or variations so much as I mean the game itself. Didn't one version have items and enemies in a different location?

With that said, is the Saturn version worth grabbing if you have it on PS1 and is it actually that good on Saturn?

Depends. Me, I'm one of those that if any of the games have the slightest difference, I have to buy it. In the Saturn's case, it added two new secret outfits for Jill and Chris, a new Tyrant, a new Hunter, and the Battle Moode.

Does the control scheme work all right and are the graphics/sounds half decent compared to the PS1 version? I'd get it if it isn't too high priced even though I have no real need for it. The question I have is if the game can easily be saved within the Saturn's internal memory or if I'd have to get a cart to save games.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it orignated as an April Fools joke in one game mag or the other. RE stuff isn't that hard to find, but if you go after Biohazard (JP) titles, you'll have a really hard time / will pay alot for the Code Veronica limited edition that comes in a aluminum briefcase with tons of extras.

It is Sweet Home for the Famicom. It is actually based on an 80s Japanese Horror film of the name title.

Although Capcom developed it, the story & game doesn't really cross over at all with Biohazard/RE. One of the biggest comparisons is that it uses the door opening door sequence, later popularized by Biohazard/RE. Also, it has a moody setting in a haunted mansion but isn't what I'd describe as scary. No guns or gore, but monsters.

All that said, I own it, and it is one of my favorite Famicom games. I don't generally enjoy RPGs aside from the Zelda/Mother series, and this one drew me in. Setting was unique for an RPG, gameplay was fun, good graphics for a Famicom game, and I especially like the music/SFX. Definitely one of the best Japanese only releases for the Famicom.

Well, the control scheme is the same tank controls as the PS1 version. So does it work all right? Nope, it's terrible. But it's no worse than any of the other versions (although I remember that the PSX Director's Cut has some improvements like auto-aiming which I believe are missing from the original PSX and SAT versions). But, despite all the complaining about the RE controls over the years, I guess I was so used to them that I never minded it. Of course, I'll still take the new RE4 controls over the old ones any day.

I've never seen the Saturn version in the wild (then again, I never see any Saturn games in the wild), but the last time I checked it on eBay it was going for around $20. As for the save system, I decided to pop in my Saturn RE game and check this out for you Bangtango. And the good news is that the game takes up next to nothing in the internal memory-- it takes 4 KB for the initial system file and 5 KB for each save spot you decide to use on the typewriter (so a minimum of 9 KB used if you keep overwriting the same file). This is peanuts compared to the hundreds of KB available in the internal memory. Nonetheless, I almost feel like the memory cart is a necessity for the Saturn anyways. I mean, I understand that many casual Saturn gamers just don't feel like paying the $30-$45 it goes for on eBay, so I have no problem with that reasoning. But personally I would never be able to deal with having all my game saves erased every year or two when the battery dies for internal saves.

If I'm not mistaken there might be two versions of Veronica X for the PS2. One was a 10th anniversary edition, I think.

There are some 10th Anniversary Resident Evil action figures also.

The Bradygames Resident Evil Archives book covers the series thoroughly from the period 1960 to 1998. Sadly, it misses RE4. But it's filled with color pics and concept art and at 304 pages, provides all sorts of information about Resident Evils Zero thru Veronica. I have it and can recommend it to any fans of the series.
