Hi guys,

Just got a slew of pre-played 64 carts from Blockbuster, and I alcoholled them properly and let them dry. They work, but the analog stick on my controller won't recognize up or down. Side-to-side is no problem, though.

Tried the hold L+R+Z and press start trick to reset the analog. Nothing.

Tried my old games and it won't work right on those, either. This is a new system Pikachu system, so it hasn't been used more than 4 or 5 times. I have to admit that it has been laying dormant for quite a while. What gives?

You need a new stick.

Sorry. Those anolog sticks are impossible to repair. The analog module can be replaced, but finding a non worn out replacement is very hard.

Good Luck!

Remember, you can call nintendo and pester them until they send a free one out for you, but they'll only do it a couple of times, and after a bit of um persuasion.

@omnedon - Do any sites lists how to switch analog modules?

@anotherfluke - Even for a Pokemon-branded controller (aka the one that came with the Pikachu set)? The Nintendo website said they charge $30 to repair that one, but I still have the warranty. (Unfortunately, it's under the bed at my permanent address.)

I just hate to junk what was a perfectly good controller just a few days ago!

What irritates me is that stores are still selling new Nintendo-brand controllers for $30 when you can buy a used system for the same price...

First, stop talking like William Shatner. After that, try another joystick. If that doesn't work, there are problems with the internal circuitry of the N64, possibly bent controller pins.

The module is easily removed with 3 screws, and unplugging an internal connector cable.

I'd KILL for a box of replacement analog sticks. I could repair 30 controllers right now!

Yeah, all the controllers are functionally the same. The pikachu controller can be fixed. Also, if your system is still under warranty, 9 times out of 10 all you need to verify the warranty is the barcode with the NS123456789 serial number on the bottom. Call Nintendo and tell them what's happening with your controller, and if it's under warranty they'll be happy to either have your controller replaced, or send you a replacement joystick.
