Most of the games are unrelated to one another in story arc and plot, though some share nods to specific people and places in earlier games. The battle system for most of the games has the same basic concept, but of course it's tweaked in later games (i.e., turn-based to active-time, etc.).
I can't recommend a specific title to choose as your starting point, though I imagine most people will say to avoid the NES Final Fantasies until you've determined whether or not you'll like the series in the first place.

Final Fantasy IV is the best one by far, and one of the easiest, if not the easiest one to get into.

I started with seven and have worked my way back and forth from there.
By far my favorite story though!

Final Fantasy 5 is easy, fun and full of entertainment. I'd suggest that one by far, but it's not released in the states. There are translations floating around the internet, as that's how I first played it back in '97.

I still have a soft spot for FF II (FF IV Japan) on the SNES. I’d start there. III (VI) and VII are also amazing titles…I also love X (NOT X-2).

Final Fantasy Anthology for the PSX has both V & VI, though the load times can be frustrating.
Also, Final Fantasy Chronicles has IV and Chrono Trigger, though, again, there are those loading times...
All four games are direct ports (in V's case, a translation, as well) of the SNES carts, so the loading was not altered to work efficiently with the Playstation.

Actually, they're running via emulation.

And don't forget the GBA ports.

Well, most people seem to prefer seven (although a lot of people will disagree here), although I personally prefer Final Fantasy 3 for the Super Nintendo or Final Fantasy 9 for the Playstation.

I consider FF6(3) to be the best in the series. 7 and 8 are good, 9 is horrible if you're a completionist (there is a sword you have to speed run the game to get) but is fun if you aren't.

6 and 9 are two of my fav's, but all of them are good. Just stay away from the PSone ports of the older games--the load times make the necessary level grinding unbearable.

And don't forget the GBA ports.
So I take it FFIV Advance on GBA would be a good place to start? I never played a FF game either and don't typically like long, involved RPG's. Figured I'd give it a try since I acquired the GBA version of FFIV here on the forums.

The only Final Fantasy I've ever been able to make myself finish is FF3/6 (which is an excellent game, by the way). Of course, I plan on remedying that soon, but I'd say 3/6 is a great place to start.

FF5 easy?! I do agree with the other two though and highly recommend it.
As for which ones to start with, id recommend Nes or Snes.

one of my favorite games of all time is Final Fantasy X. I highly recomend that one just for the way you level up your characters. It has a great story line and all the cutscenes have voiceovers so it makes it a bit easier to follow the story. Really its a great game.

I have NEVER beaten a Final Fantasy game. I own FF1, FF2, FF3, FF:MQ, FF:anthology, FF7, FF8, FF9, FF10 never EVER beat any of them. I've made it to the 4 disc of FF8, and the 3rd disc of FF9.

I would definitely suggest FF 3/6. Definitely my favorite of the FF games, and a really good one to start with.
