Eurogamer/GamesIndustry.biz reports on Sony's pleased statements about the PlayStation 3. The company has made a point to note that Blu-ray was totally worth it after recent comments by some developers who had problems fitting their titles onto a DVD. The interview with the site promises 'big things' for the format in the future. The future of the PS3 itself seems to have changes coming too: a television tuner and DVR functionality looks to be in the offing for the console. Microsoft announced similar plans earlier this year, but there are no firm dates for either company's use of the console.Read more of this story (http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/08/01/1756225&from=rss) at Slashdot.

DVR would be nice. Too bad the biggest HD they have is 80 GB. Good luck getting a lot of HD content on that. Is that desparation I smell?

That's the thing it's not like Microsoft that you have to buy a specific hard drive

any Laptop hard drive will work, so you could buy a 160 gig hard drive and it would be fine, that's one of the biggest benefits of the PS3,if anything this is great news for the PS3.

I didn't know that. Is replacing the hard drive something the average consumer can do? If so it seems strange that so many people are complaining about the low disc space. Why not just buy the 20 gig unit and a 500 gig HD?

I see no way that you can spin this way to sound like a desparation move, your just grasping straws.

Allow me to try:

It's not selling as a gaming system.

It's not selling as a Blu Ray player.

Hey gang, let's make it a DVR!

Desparation is a stinky cologne:bareass:

I'd kill just to have an 80GB in my computer. All I have is an old 8GB drive I got for free, LOL

What is it selling as?

<insert lame jokes about slow sales>

In any case, who would seriously spin new, useful, free functionality as a negative? 5 points for the answer. ;)

The price. Laptop HDs with a lot of capacity can get pretty pricey.

While I had always expected that I would buy a PS3 eventually... this is both causing me to wait until DVR functionality is added, and causing me to want it more as soon as it is. It's an expensive machine... with very few games that interest me, and I have no use for BluRay, but with the PSP connectivity & DVR capabilities... it will fit nicely next to the modded Xbox in my media center corner of the living room. If we could only convince Sony to support DivX/Xvid & all other formats, then it would be a no brainer.

Also... Wipeout HD may be enough to convince me to get an HDTV when I do finally pick up a PS3. Hopefully by then it'll include the Rumbleaxxis (or whatever they'll call it).

It's always been the plan to make the PS3 an all-in-one media device. DVR functionality was always in the cards. Question that intersts me is how well will it compare to other DVR's and will it record HD?

I didn't spin it as a negative. I said it was nice.

I actually kind of like the system. That doesn't mean Sony isn't desparate to start selling them and catch up with Microsoft.

I said "I smell desparation" and suddenly people got defensive.

Can I have the 5 points now?

Laptop HDs are cheap, < $100 canadian for a 120GB... probably lower by the time I need to upgrade. I picked up a 60GB last week, it's been good.

Granted I mainly use it for Blu-ray, demos and PS2 games ;)

(and NHL 07)

You can see why people are confused, now. ;)

Anyways, not a big deal, just having fun.

If they read every other sentence I imagine they'll be confused by a lot of things.

Damn. The PS3 is quickly becoming my dream system. The one that I made up on paper when I was a little kid. You know. Minus the games. This is really cool, and I love the idea of added functionality. But, Sony, for the love of God, you need some software on that thing before we're going to plunk down change for it.

And a TV tuner? Um.. I've got one of those. It's my TV. :P

And the software dealie just got a fist to the family jewels with T2's announcement that the new GTA isn't coming this Xmas. Sony can write off the '07 holiday season with the 360 getting a new Halo and stuff like Smash Bros. headed to the Wii.

They can add a Blu-Ray vibrator to the thing and it still isn't going to sell without some killer app software and the system is clearly taking developers significant time to master.

Good timing for this discussion - Gamespot just posted a how-to upgrade your PS3 HDD - seems very, very easy.
