I never really got into the whole emulator thing with my PSP, but the PS1 emu has stoked my interest. How playable is it? Is Chrono Cross playable? What firmware do I need to run?

Other question is about RPGs. I know about Valykrie Profile and the FF remakes (are they any good? does FF1 have a good story?), but is there anything else?

FF1 and 2 have about the simplest, most generic stories possible. im not sure if the psp remakes are any different. the game has been out on more systems i care to count.

valkyrie profile is pretty good. both story and gameplay, i recommend it

The PS1 is not emulated on the PSP. Instead there is an application that converts the games into a PSP playable format. So it is not emulated, just made native.

I think as long as you get the custom firmware you can do it.

yeah youd need 3.02OE firmware or later. It runs perfect too.

How are multi disc ps1 games handle when emued?

the disc ID of the other discs have to be made identical to the first disc, so that the save can work on the other discs, generally before you switch discs you're given the opportunity to save, I suggest you take it, since "swapping discs" on the psp means you exit out of the emu, select the second disc and start it.

Interesting...now does running the emulator require to me to "acquire" these PS1 games from somewhere (if you get my drift) or do I have to rip them myself from the game disc(s)?

It can actually be done either way. You can get the necessary files, or you can rip them from the ps1 cd's. I know you need an application for it though. I'll PM you some links for good homebrew apps.

What firmware are you currently running, btw?

Edit: As far as multi-disc PSX games are concerned, usually there are seperate files for each of the discs, considering they are independent of eachother, and only rely on a single save state. When a game is saved, the save file goes into the x\PSP\SAVEGAME directory. Although i've never used a multi-disc game on my PSP, I'm sure you can just copy the save into the other discs save folder.

The Sony made emulator is actually in the PSP firmware as of the 3 series. The "OE" series of hacked firmware just allows any game to be run, not just the ones Sony sells through it's online store with DRM. Last I checked - any PSP with 3.03 regular or lower could be cross flashed to the hacked firmware. The hacked firmware will allow you to play retail PSP games, ps1 games and even "aquired" ps1 and psp game images.

You can use a program called "icetea" to rip your own PSX games. It is what I have used, and no problems so far. The games themselves work almost flawlessly, much better than I had ever expected.

It is certainly worth getting, the OE firmware itself is excellent for other emulators aswell.

OT but not: anyone know why Dark_Alex left the scene and who is picking up his work, if anyone?

The post he left said something about classes and worrying about getting caught. I think some russian group is picking up where he left off..

He said that it was due to it cutting into his personal time and due to PS3 modders getting threatened by Sony, but I doubt that.

A new FW, I believe it was 3.50 or something around ti was just released maybe a week ago. he was set to release 3.50 OE in a couple of days. Suddenly, he stopped and posted his goodbye message on his site, which now only shows a black ribbon with Dark_Alex on it. My guess is that Sony directly contacted him either through mail, or by a line of code in a firmware, threatening him.

It reeks of foul play on Sony's part, and it pisses me off. The homebrew community will never have another modder/hacker as good as DAX.

I've always wondered if maybe Sony payed him to stop doing it. Y'know, instead of a long, drawn-out legal battle that tarnishes your reputation, just give the guy a couple hundred thousand to go away.

Of course, there's always another waiting to take his place.

Apparently some Russian programmers have picked up where DAX left off. I'll see if I can find a link.

Yeah they call themselves Team M33 and their current firmware is for 3.52. Has anyone tried these yet? Opinions?

From what I've read they seem to be the real deal, but I haven't had the guts to install one yet.

I want to, just 'cause I enjoy doing it, but unless/until I own a game that requires higher than what I've got, I'll stick with DA's swan song.

BTW: I believe, if you're playing a multi disk PSP game that doesn't save directly before switching discs, you really need to use CWCheat in order to transfer your save to a useable format for ePSXe. Then play the game through the switch, then save after swapping discs.

You still need to ensure that youv'e converted the game with the same SLUS code or this won't work, but that's my impression of how to get it to work.

I've yet to play a 2CD game that far to be honest (I played FFIX for awhile and then stopped, and just started Parasite Eve so I'm not even close to switching yet).

You're right, but it doesn't effect the Final Fantasy games - I've played FFVII, VIII and IX to completion on my PSP... Metal Gear Solid, however, requires you to move your save onto the computer, advance to the second disc in EMU, save and transfer the save file back to your PSP to continue... It's a pain in the butt, frankly... :frustrated:

@Nature Boy

I just finished installing the newest firmware (3.52) from M33. No problems as of yet, all the features seem to work just fine. The team is apparently releasing a lot of revisions for it, but they seem to be on par with Dark_Alex's firmwares, so I would give you the thumbs up to download them.

Anyone interested should definitely try to verify, before they start, whether or not the game saves prior to switching or not. You're in for a world of frustration if you don't!

@Shoes23: Thanks for the heads up. That might just be enough for me to take the plunge!
