There's a lot of Texans on this board and it's about time we gather our resources and put something together!
We can meet centrally, ie, Austin for anything. There's several good gaming shops there and last I heard some kind of big gaming related convention(s) that also take place.
Not only that, but this thread will allow Texan DPer's to meet in their own areas if desired!
So, if you're Texas and more than jealous of everyone in Jersey having all the fun, post a shout out here and we'll try to make something happen!
*Mods, I know there are some older Texas threads but they are a couple of years old and very disorganised! Please don't lock this one!*

Great idea, but Texas is a big state! :)
What kind of meeting are you talking about? Possibly some fun multiplayer game competition, with food and drinks?
Or a full-fledged Show/Expo that has vendors? (Which will require quite a bit of planning.)

Checking in here.. Marco at Play Again Classic Video Games here in Corpus Christi TX. If DP'ers need a store to meet and the ocean is a destination then I am your person for that! In addition I would like to also host events in my store for DP'ers as well! Come on there has to be people wanting Anime Night, Retro & Modern Game Competitions and Cosplay events?

Definitely the fun multiplayer thing with food/drinks...even buying/selling/trading! I'm hoping we can also get people together for anything cool that floats into Texas!
Yup, big state! That's why I was thinking Austin might be a good central location for everyone! Of course, it's always open for suggestion and ideas!
I can't wait for all this to get off the ground! It's been a long time coming!

I'm usually in Austin, Texas, and I'm a classic gamer :) I'm not going to be back in town until September... I actually hosted a gaming get-together that drew people from around the state back in 1996 or 1997.

Houston, we have a problem... I know there's at least half a dozen of us here... so why don't we ever hang out? why don't we have our own gaming event? I know there's some kind of classic gaming event in Austin... I think it might be combined with some kind of board gaming event, but they have an event... DFW has gaming tournaments all the time, including a pro gaming event... sure most of what DFW has is just FPS frag fests, but at least they have events... and then there's Houston... bigger than DFW, and yet completely devoid of events... despite the fact that we have plenty of places to hang out and have an event!

Well, from what I gather there is a fairly large tournament based fighting game crowd here in Houston. Most of them post on the Shoryuken forums.

I perfer Dallas or Houston for a meet. I'm no fan of Austin. I'd say local meet ups would be a good start and then decide on anything formal like a large meet that involves a hotel or a convention hall.

I'm not a big fan of Houston, mainly because it seems they never stop doing construction on the roads. Every time I go through, there's always work being done. I-45 suddenly goes from four lanes merging down to a bike path or something. But if Houston is the most convenient location, I can put aside my bloodthirsty, blinding road rage. Besides, Houston's only something like two hours from Sulphur, Louisiana, my birthplace, so it would be pretty dang sweet to be able to drive over there after an expo and stay at my uncle's house for the night, and load up on Cajun food.

Travel ability is rather limited, especially when it comes to trips that span more than a single day. If us Houston area folk want to tear it up around town once and awhile... I'm game.

just a thought towards DP in general, it would be interesting to make something officially sanctioned and have a few representatives set up a DP.com booth in a convention or something. like a smaller version of Marco's Corpus store for retro gaming. DP could supply advertising material but keep a royalty or something. Get's the word out in another way.

Shouting out from Austin.
Regarding what city to have a Texas-event in: Since I live in Austin, obviously Austin would be most convenient for me, but if I can tolerate a trip to Las Vegas for the sake of videogames, I can certainly make it to almost anywhere in Texas that is convenient/attractive to most of the TXDPers concerned.
Can the originator of this topic turn it into a poll consisting of a few medium to big TX cities and we can vote in it to get a sense of how we're distributed? I'm thinking it would be between: San Antonio, Austin, Dallas/Foat Wuth, Houston, Corpus Christi, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, El Paso, Amarillo and any other population center I'm forgetting.
One advantage of having an expo-like event NOT in SA, Austin or Houston, but rather in Dallas, is the chance of having people from outside our state come to it . . . if that's what we want . . . 'cause people from outside of Texas tend to talk funny and that makes them hard to understand. LOL
Personally, I'd be happy with semi-regular meetups jumping around from city to city every quarter or so. Once every few months we declare a swap meet to be taking place and we haul our stuff to the city of the quarter/half-year.
Here in Austin, I think it would be awesome to have another videogame tournament at the Alamo Drafthouse. There's just something unique about playing 2600 Pac-man on a huge movie-screen. . .horrible? Absolutely, but still pretty unique.

That's a good point, since there's a whole lot of folks here from some of those 'lesser' states up in the wild lands above Texas, like Oklahoma or Arkansas. They like to occasionally come down from the back woods and admire our electricity, paved roads, and our mullet-free haircuts. LOL
I second the idea of turning this into a poll for which city would be preferable for a meet.

My mom is in El Paso. But I don't know when I'll be there. I'm in Saint Paul MN right now. If I am there and there is a gathering, I'll see if I can go. I'm willing to host at my place. We have a swimming pool and home theater at the house. And the house is up in the mountains on the west side. Only problem is nobody here may agree since I'm in the far western part of the state.

I'm down with that!
as for Dallas, I'd really like to know why the hell everyone from outside TX thinks that Dallas is the only city in TX that they could ever possibly visit... it's as bad as all the people in Dallas who could never even be bothered to drive half an hour to the west, to Fort Worth, much less to any other city in TX... I guess when you live in the largest city in the state, (Houston) you realize that driving from the east side of Dallas to the west side of Fort Worth is the same thing as driving from the east side of Houston to the west side of Houston... really not that far to drive, unless you live in Dallas... then apparently it suddenly becomes the equivalent of a coast to coast trek like National Lampoon's Vacation... way too far to drive, because it's not in Dallas!
as for the constant road construction in Houston, it's because most people who live here are actually willing to drive places... we don't just sit here and expect the rest of the world to come to us... we go to it... although there are those people who live inside the loop who think they couldn't possibly ever venture outside the loop, except to go to the Galleria... they must be from Dallas... and God only knows how they ever managed to move here...
now with that said, I really don't have much against Dallas, except for the infamous attitude of most of its inhabitants... I have no idea what's up with that... I guess when they got their own TV show, they all thought that they were supposed to act like that, cause that's how they acted on the show...
holy shit, now I'm starting to sound like one of those people from Dallas! LOL

i know what you mean about those "loopies" that never go anywhere I have worked a few posts in River Oaks and the opulence of these people astounds me. Especially when I usually work in the southeast, which I refer to as "Barter Town". :shameful:
I think Austin is central enough for most people to get to for a texas get together, but I'm also all for smaller city gatherings.

Sorry you wasted the gas to get here. That Dallas show was a total washout. The guy who was supposed to bring dozens of arcade machines forgot what day it was and so didn't make it, vendors bailed out, not too many people showed up because it wasn't really advertised at all (and putting it in the far back of a home and garden type convention wasn't a good idea either-I couldn't find it at first and nearly went home) and the whole thing felt half-hearted. The show carried through to Sunday, but the place was a ghost town by then, with only the Atari Age booth still set up. Which is why the America's Videogame Expo didn't hit Dallas last year. Total disappointment all around.

Damn. I didn't get off work on Saturday until 4pm. I'm planning on doing some thrifting around Hurst tomorrow, I'll try to hit Lone Star and pick up the book.
Incidentally, I believe that the store one slot down from Lone Star used to be an Atari store called Megabyte Computers. They started out during the 8-bit period all the way through to the Falcon 030, but ended up going out of business around the Jaguar era. My best friend used to work there. I always get a little sad when I drive past it.

IIRC, that would be the store I bought my 1040 STFM. Sounds like the right area, but it's been awhile. Heh, I went in their to get a replacement for my 1050 Drive, and ended up leaving with a full ST system setup. :D

Sorry there were no copies of the book at the store, Steve, but they don't officially carry it (McFarland only gives booksellers a 20% discount, so the owner of Lone Star chose not to actually carry the book. He was, however, gracious enough to let me bring my own copies).

Well, there is Jillian's (which is essentially D&B's) off of I-10 in the big Marq*E plaza. There's also a Tilt arcade in the Galleria mall (in the food court)...and another one in Memorial City Mall (not sure if that was a Tilt or not).
West Oaks mall near Westheimer and Highway 6 has an arcade, I believe. I remember it being rather puny.
And, IIRC, there's an arcade that caters to the fighting game crowd (it's a newer one, and not the one that closed down a few years ago). The name escapes me at the moment.

Since it's only 15 minutes or so from my house, I go to Wizard World Texas (http://www.wizardworld.com/) every year, and I always have a great time. This year, however, the event holds a special significance, at least to me. Part of the festivities is the 30th Anniversary of Lone Star Comics, an eight-store chain in the Dallas/Fort Worth area (I used to manage the Hurst location).
Lone Star will play host to a number of autographings, including the likes of J. Scott Campbell and Adam Kubert. Somehow I weaseled my way onto the list and will be appearing at the Lone Star booth on Friday from 12-1 and on Saturday from 10-11, copies of Classic Home Video Games 1972-1984 (http://www.amazon.com/Classic-Home-Video-Games-1972-1984/dp/0786432268/ref=sr_1_1/102-4833994-2708962?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180844138&sr=8-1) in hand. The signing went great and was lots of fun. Gamer Over owner David Kaelin is really cool to deal with and is a true pro in terms of video game retailing. His store is awesome. We're already talking about doing another signing during next Christmas season.

A bit late to this thread, but I'm game for a get together of Texan gamers (DP or otherwise), it's just that I'd have to know of an event like a month and a half in advance is all. I attended a few get togethers from other forums in the past (two in SATX and one in Austin back when PowerCade was still at the DOBIE Mall), but neither of them had stellar results. Guess after that I was a bit jaded. Still though, at damn near 30 years old, a overly rambunctious 2 year old daughter, and work, work, work, work, work, work, work... I wouldn't mind an old school kind of meet 'em up and free for all.

Nice guy but DON'T go hunting with him, he will sniff out the goods before you will anyday!;) All honesty, he is genuine and I look forward to buying his book.
Good to hear from you!
Heh, I remember it well! I was shocked to see you standing in line at Thrift Town with that Super Pong and Intellivision. The Saturn find more than made up for it, though. ;)
Shoot me an email if you want to purchase a signed copy of the book.

The Texas Pinball Convention is March 14-16 in Grapevine. They always have a number of classic video games set on free play, plus, of course, tons of pinball machines.
I've been several times and always have a blast. We should all get together and hang out. If nothing else, we could go grab a bite to eat at the Whataburger, which is easily within walking distance.

I usually make this one. Doubt I'll take any machines this year due to time constraints, but would like to meet up with some other DP'ers!

I just talked to the Texas Pinball Festival head honcho, and we finalized an agreement. Lord willin' and the crick don't rise, I'll be there on March 15th from 2-4, signing my book.
Maybe everyone could meet at the autographing table around 3:30 or 4, and then we could make plans for grabbing a bite to eat or playing a few rounds of pinball or whatever.

I'm going to try and make it there. No promises, though. For some dang reason, I have missed the past three years of the show! I usually find out about it the day after the event, which is aggravating. Last year, my jerk boss made me work. This year, come hell or high water, I'm going to make it. Maybe I'll get my brother to go with me like he did with the Houston show. He loved that one more than I thought he would.

Thanks for posting the info about this here, My radar is so low-powered lately, I'm certain I would've missed it. That's Spring Break in these parts and we'll be travelling the first part of the week. Maybe we'll get to Grapevine on the 15th.
