Does anyone know of a good repair man for my PSP? The system won't read the UMD's. Preferably someone in the states that is trustworthy.

First things first.

Are you using homebrew of any kind?

Not in the states, but ships worldwide.

And answer Apollo's question. =)

I am not sure. I bought this used from someone off craigslist. He told me it was broke and sure enough it is. I try to play a UMD and it immediately says "Cannot read disc."

Is there any way I can tell.

Brb ::Go grabs his PSP::

Settings>System Settings>System Information>What ever the system software is labeled as and tell us what it is. This won't say for sure, but it would hint at.

Then what is it???

So far, it sounds like a semi-brick...

I know him personally and he does realy tip top work. He modded my first PS2 a couple years ago.

I fix PSPs, MOD them, etc.

I have a couple donor PSPs right now. I can fix it no problems for you. I can even update it to a custom firmware at the same time so you can play homebrew things on it (i.e. NES emulators, etc.)

All I need is the PSP, i have extra batteries, memory sticks, etc. to do everything I need to do.

If the UMD drive needs to be replaced, no worries I have an extra.

Shoot me a PM and we can talk about it more, discuss cost, etc.

Sotware 1.5 isn't a custom firmware, but is an older and official Sony firmware.

A custom firmware would have OE-A or M33 (or M33-something) after the 1.xx, 2.xx, or 3xx. firmware number (such as 3.40 OE-A)

It sounds like a laser problem rather than a semi-brick to me (in my limited experience with those). If it is a semi-brick it should be fully recoverable if done properly.

Agreed 1.5 isnt custom, just the stepping stone to a custom firmware.
Custom Firmwares are pretty great allowing a lot of cool stuff to be done with the PSP!

It also sounds like a laser issue and should probably be replaced, agree with bassgrabber.
