Friends, enemies, those who simply tolerate me, and those who don't even fucking know me:
I have come to announce that I am leaving the video game scene.
This has forthcome as a series of events, ranging from yesterday's last straw when I tipped a shelf over, destroying a black dc, a saturn, a neo geo, and an atari XEGS, to the fact that over the past year, i've literally had to FORCE myself to play video games, to the fact that I have a lot of debt right now, and finally to the fact that since I don't even play this shit, And it's what is between me and packing all my worldly possesions into a car and going....or, just plain going.
The Time has Come. This should not come as a shock.
Expect my selling thread to pop up relatively soon. Those who know me mostly already know, or will be recieving the traditional dibs one gives to his closest former collectors before Exiting the Arcade for good.
Thanks for the weather while it was fun.
Enjoy every sandwich - warren zevon

Good Luck, collecting for the sake of collecting can be draining in many ways, so you should by all means "move on" if you don't enjoy playing anymore.

Sucks, but things change.
Especially when you have way too much shit you don't even play, and when your interest has waned to such a point, it's best to cash out now, while you can still get something for it.
Besides, I'd rather be in the black with a small/non-existant collection, than broke and own every AES cart ever.
Good luck to you in the future!

I am sure you have thought about this kamino, and I am sure things are tough in your life right now that many of us will never realize. Just make sure you wont regret selling everything off later on in the future...but hell if a shelf with my systems fell and broke my neo geo and stuff I would be really pissed too.
Best of luck with whatever you end up doing, and I will be sure to browse your selling thread with whatever little money I have.

Wow. Just wow. Since I've been around DP, I've always talked to and been friendly with Kamino. From a fuck up on my part that he was totally cool with, to many stupid ass conversations...I'm going to miss ya. That is assuming that you plan on leaving DP entirely. I'd imagine with you leaving the scene, leaving DP would be part of it. I hope that you'll still come by to say hi every so often...
Regardless, you know your shit game-wise, are friendly (;)) and are a rare around these parts in that you have a unique and identifiable personality.
My absolute best wishes to Kam as you collect your life into a new journey and move forth.
God speed!

you're going to hold onto a system or two I hope...? i don't play nearly as much as i did in the dreamcast glory days (well those were my glory days as a gamer at least), but there will come a time you want to play game x, or game y comes out and you hear about it/want it.
if you're really getting out of it 100%, good luck :) it will take a load off of you, as you said already... this is an expensive hobby!

Under normal circumstances, I could understand the concept of you wanting to sell of your collection, but I think you're doing it for the purpose of making foolish use of the proceeds. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, in fact I hope I'm wrong. You've been spiralling down a path of self destruction for the past year and a half or so, and for a time it was cute and funny, but I see this shit getting out of hand at this point. You've gotta pull yourself together...

Totally sucks. I had a chance to hang with you a few months ago and you seemed like a stand up gent. I along with everyone else here have had hard times and it sucks. We're a community and should rely on one another when the chips are down - though some folks around here will only cut you down...fuck them.
Anyway, if there's anything I can do to help feel free to contact me. I'm sure others you're close to on the board feel the same. Don't quit us, yourself, or gaming!

Kamino, I hope all the best for you.
I've noticed a few people in the hobby suddenly drop everything, cash out and dissappear. I'm wondering though, does it all have to be so black and white? I mean if a person has been involved in a hobby, what about taking a "sabbatical" or just chill for a while rather than dumping everything? Mind you in the end a person has to do what they feel is best for them, but IMHO somethimes things don't have to be so final. 8-)

dunno you kamino. But it seems every (half) year really, there's another post on a gaming board somewhere: "I'm quitting this hobby." I guess people feel the need to express it to others as a final act/"proper farewell." Some people get uptight seeing these topics (i.e. "don't be such a drama queen, if you're gonna leave then leave"), but I really don't mind them. At any rate, sounds like you've come to a point in your life where you've just "lost the gaming bug"... sure you can hang onto a few systems you like the most.... but sometimes these things are more final. Oh hell I'm just rambling. All I know is, it's natural for human beings to move on at some point in time. Maybe not completely, but they need new challenges and new things to keep life interesting. Variety is the spice of life.
Good luck.

Damn, man. I know we've talked off and on over time and things in your life has been a roller coaster. While the debt you're in (credit card I'm assuming) seems like the end of the world-trust a guy who was there as well: you'll make it through. To coin an "old fart" saying: you're young yet and you've got the time to beat back those debts. I can suggest the credit counseling company I used to help my wife and I out (and I'm not ashamed to admit using one) if you want.
As for your games: well, you gotta do what you gotta do but take an inventory and hang onto what games mean the most. Even if you don't play them, one day you'll catch the urge to play some Streets of Rage 3 or some Tempest 2000 and find you don't have the equipment anymore. Thus the collecting cycle can start anew. Again trust a guy who's done this before: I think I'm on my fifth or sixth Genesis (after selling it all off because I didn't play it) and my wife won't let me buy a TurboGrafix 16 again (after buying and selling the system three times). For that stuff if you have a storage issue, I've got space if you need to store it.
Good luck, my friend.

Keep a game boy and a few games. Times get boring and a game boy is easy enough to through in a bag when you go.
My sympathies to you. Despite the fact that I have only been here for a month, I do believe that you have shed some light upon these forums, even for the ones who have nothing to do with the particular threads. I completely understand how you feel, despite how cliche it sounds. I, too, have been through the phases of dropping my hobbies. And as days pass, I leave myself to think more and more, "Is this really a phase, or am I being sincere with myself?"
As with every hobby, video games cost money. Unfrotunately, for many that have consumed themselves in the video game age for most of their life, they find that it is no longer the fix for their needs, but simply the tolerance. I can feel your pain with the shelf collapse. For such reasons, I keep my systems in boxes, out of fear that it would happen. If I were to experience such mass (unintentional) destruction with any passions of my own, tears would not be enough to express the anger of such happenings.
As for your debts, that is an unfortunate fate for nearly every collection. And given your situation and fury of ironic instances, I blame you not for your choice. In fact, it appears as though nearly everyone backs you up on this, aside from the occasional ass that likes to degrade for no reason but to cover up their own insecurities.
As neuropolitique stated, it would be in one's better interest to keep at least a GameBoy, for the convenience of a handheld time-killer never hurt anyone.
Whatever you decide to do, though - just do not look back in regret. Also, salvage what you can (because you know there are crazy-ass gyzmo freaks that like pieces to systems on eBay, and even though the motherboard is cracked or something does not mean that the processor is trashed), get your money's worth, and if it is of any importance to you, make sure the remains go to someone that can pass the system on for as long as possible.
Godspeed, Kamino, and if I arrive in time, I look forward to your selling thread. Good luck.

Good luck with everything, Kamino. :)
I'm in some debt at the moment myself, and can completely understand having to sell up to free up some space and money. I hope you can pull yourself out and that this is the start of a great life for you, one involving video games again in the future.
Anyways, you know I'm around to talk to whenever you need it.

I can understand that you sell parts of your collection for financial reasons, and if you are in debt you actually should. However, don't be too drastic and radical when it comes to selling and staying involved in the collecting scene.
It seems you overate, you did too much in a short period of time, and a break is good sometimes, but not an extreme good-bye. You have a passion for games, you are interested in game history, and this passion is still there (just right now a bit complex in frustrated clothing) and will come back in the most uncomplicated manner, keep that in mind; hold on to your games and systems which mean most to you, don't sell if you don't have to, and sell the rest to get consolidated.
Collecting and the deep passion that comes with it is like life: it is not a sprint, it's a marathon, and mixed with other interests so we don't focus entirely on one thing helps to persevere. Culture your passion, model it, develop it, give it less focus from time to time, but never try to abandon it, not even for a couple of years. Stay with it in a healthy manner and don't overeat again. Consistency and moderation from time to time is a good thing.
Oh Lord, I wrote an 'Ask Aunt Debbie' response. Still, with all the generalizations and dumb sounding good advice I hope that it is good advice. :)
On a side note: I never understood why people would sell a system they don't play f or a couple of years. Collecting is about surrounding yourself and accumulating options to play, not playing constantly. I didn't play my NES for a couple of years, and then there is a time when I plug in a Ninja Gaiden, or a Blaster Master, or the first castlevania which I still love...and if I'm in a courageous mood, I even try Battletoads.
I never sold a system, the missing option to play when i'm in the mood to play certain games and genres would bother me to no end. My Dreamcast hasn't seen playtime in over a year now, but selling it and the games would be foolish: Metropolis Street Racer is just too good not to be played, may it be tomorrow or in two years; and this is my attitude towards collecting in general as well.

Kamino, I honestly consider you a good friend from this here 'Net. I hope if this is just a funk that you'll get over it, and if it's not... then, those systems SHOULD find themselves a home where they'll get play. Just don't do anything you'll regret in the end, brother; nobody should have to go through a feeling like that.

I already knew that you were doing this, and it still pisses me off. Not because you're selling off your games, but just because of your circumstances. In all seriousness, I'm kind of worried about you. I really hope you get your shit together, and soon.
On another note, I hope you don't disappear completely. When I was a n00b here and on the bender, you were one of the (very) few people that really talked to me. Your going to do what ever you want to do and that's the way it's always been. I cant stop you and I'm not going to try. I'll hope you dont come to regret it not because I'll be missing out on the chance to cherry pick your collection clean but because I know at one point or another your going to have a moment of regret. Problem is how long will it take before it passes. You know me, you know how much I bitch about my collection. I dont even have as much as you even. I'd like to say "the catch is" but there's not realy a catch. I try to play what I can but just like you I tend to force myself to play more then I do out of enjoyment. I'd rather you just box all your shit up, save up for a bigger vehicle (or rent a u-haul) and if you realy want to move to Reno, take your shit with you. That's my 2 cents. It's going to suck though when a-kon comes around. It's not just about anime, it's also about games. As you'd be out of the only one of those two you do enjoy, what would be the point? Your choice man. Think hard on it. You've changed in the past god knows how many years I've been talking to you. I dont know how it's going to continue, but do weigh your options. Quit gaming for some time. Box all your shit and forget about it. Do that. If someone gets pissed cause they didnt get the chance to pick your best stuff well, remind em it's all loose and your thinking about it. Or dont. Your choice, not mine.

You don't need to quit the scene really now do you?
Just get rid of the trash you will never play.

Your stuff does not need to be perfect to be loved.:bday:

As far as selling your stuff goes...don't sell anything you have sentimental attachment to. You'll regret it in the end. I've given thought to selling my stuff off from time to time, but seeing that it makes up so much of who I am, I'd never be able to rid myself of all of it.

Idiot.
It's funny. No one commented on this. Had anyone else said it I think there would have been a riot...
Anyways...
Selling your collection because of debt doesn't neccessarily make sense. A large game collection is actually an asset because you can resell it and recoup much/most/all of your money to pay off the debt; I like to think of it as equity. You need to pay the debt down without diminishing your asset if this is impossible you need to sell a portion of your collection to the extent that it positions you to make repayment. Of course it may still be impossible.
Sorry about the shelf collapsing...that'll give me nightmares.
Exiting the hobby has only one advantage. If you come back it'll be new to you again, which is a fantastic feeling...
Good luck in any regards.

I've gone through this phase several times already. It's just a symptom of burnout. It doesn't matter if it's video games, or bowling, or bicycling, or photography. Eventually it will happen. You just need to do it like the investors and diversify your interests.

And another thing to chew on...I'm sure a lot of people are like me and have kind of a videogame schedule throughout the year, if you will. I start getting really excited about videogames when Fall hits, or around Halloween. I guess it's the weather..It starts getting dark earlier, it's colder etc... Then when it starts getting hot around April or so, I gradually lose interest in games until Halloween again. :P I have noticed over the years I am like this...

Come on Chris, don't quit. You were one of the first guys that I made deals with, and you were always willing to help. Once I had the crazy idea of letting go some games and my Star Wars collection because of my wedding, that was 2 years ago and I am proud I didn't made that move. Just take your time to relax as we are not playing games all the time. Just hit the pause button, don't turn off the console. If you go we're all gonna miss ya.

...I'm sure a lot of people are like me and have kind of a videogame schedule throughout the year, if you will. I start getting really excited about videogames when Fall hits, or around Halloween. I guess it's the weather..
Late October: Seal up the Room of Doom. Owing the lack of central heat, I can spend very little time back there until January.
January: Crank up the space heaters in the RoD and play through any modern games I received during Christmas. Don't buy any new games owing to post-holiday sticker shock.
March: Swear off going to thrift stores ever again owing the absolute lack of decent finds.
April: Temperatures warm up enough to allow time for Room of Doom until around sunset.
May: With garage sale season in full swing, start going to thrift stores again.
Late May: Open of Room of Doom windows and doors for 24-hour access.
June: Start spending a lot more time on the MAME cab and 2600 in anticipation of CGE.
July - September: Play games and go thrifting as much as possible.
Early October: Garage sale season ends. Start considering, but not wholly committed to, the idea that "it's not worth it anymore" to go to thrifts owing to lack of decent finds.
Late October: Back to the beginning of the cycle.

Sure I've got loads of debt and hardly ever play games (wife practically forced me to get through Zelda on the Wii and Mario DS). I've stopped going to swap meets and thrift stores and hardly ever stop by Gamestops anymore which would have been unheard of a few years ago. But I never sold anything. They sit in an overcrowded room soon to be moved to a $139 per month 10x10 storage unit. Sure I'm really considering selling off the vic-20 stuff and other systems that I just don't care about (I'm looking at you Intellivision!). But I don't think you need to sell it all. Keep what you value most. Keep the games you had before you took up collecting.

dude, I can totally feel you on this... I've often fantasized about selling all my shit and using the money to sow a few wild oats while I sort out my life... my sister says that whenever I finally get to the point where I know that I won't be living much longer (I have a terminal illness) that I should sell off all my shit while I'm still well enough to enjoy having all that money to spend, and fulfill my dream of riding every roller coaster that I can get myself to... she says I'm the only one who knows a damn thing about my collection well enough to sell it all and get anywhere near what it should all be worth anyway, so I might as well be the one to sell it all off instead of leaving it to my family to sort it all out... in other words, she doesn't wanna have to deal with it all either... but I don't know if I could ever find the balls to actually do that and not regret it after I did it... I'd have to be sure that I would die pretty soon...
anyhow, even though I don't really know you and we've never really chatted much before, I always thought that you were a pretty cool dude... so I'll miss seeing you around... but fucking up all that shit would be a last straw for me too... sometimes you just have to have enough good sense to recognize all the signs and do what your fate has destined you to do at a certain point in your life... so I hope that doing that works out for you... it sounds like you need it to work out... fuck all the shit, it's all just material bullshit anyway...

The fuck?
Also, damn, that sucks, Iron D.; I hope that won't come for a long time. Like the theatrical release of Blade Runner.

What scene were you in? Are you a movie star?
I think it was the drugs and alcohol, living in an alley under a box scene.

What happened, did you get laid or something?
You'll be back. If not in 1 year, then in 10. If you like games, sometimes guys who are 17-28 duck out for bigger things, but come back to gaming once things settle down.
We had some fun. I hope to see you around. You certainly have mddr sklz than I do.

For anybody that is calling it quits, I totally understand. I've only been into retro games now for 4 years, but I've already pondered it numerous times. The best advice I can give, is if you do decide to sell everything, then keep one item. Get yourself a modded Xbox 1, with a huge hard drive (if you don't already have one), and just load the puppy up with emulators and roms galore, and just make sure to take that large machine with you wherever you go. The amount of gaming history that I've seen on various Xbox 1 HDD's always amazes me. You can literally have 20 or more years of gaming history on a modded Xbox 1 hard drive.
My boy jibbajabba modded a Xbox 1 controller, so that he could plug a real NES controller and a real Genesis controller and a real SNES controller into it. He sold alot of his crap, although he still has quite a bit, and he's kinda used his Xbox 1 as his retro gaming jukebox. If I ever sold everything, I would at least keep around a modded Xbox 1 for the occasional moment when I got the retro bug to play a particular game.

You know, I was already going through fiscal, mental, and other fucked up stress problems when the neo hit the floor a week ago.
I DID come to HALFWAY of a rash decision.
The idea of moving to reno was fucking stupid.
Having all this crap = still stupid.
quitting something that's been with me my entire life ? = also stupid.
and many of your words were taken into extreme consideration.
I have come to a resolution.
I sat down at a party tonight and played some games with friends, some guitar hero 2, some halo.
What I shall do, here, see, Is sell all classics. Everything from the cartridge era. All carts = gone. DS games? I'll hangon. gba? hang on.
Anthony1 and jibbajaba are right. Some people like to trash talk jibba, but fucking shit when that man talks to me I listen. and to the others. They're right. I can't LEAVE gaming; it IS part of who I am.
A modded xbox I do have, mister anthony 1. And a bigger hard drive I shall put in it, soon, to accomodate all my classic gaming needs. Hit me up on AIM with some good sources for romsites :)
I hate to be an attention whore. Really, I do. If anything, I needed to reach out to a lot of people I knew - at once - to help me through a VERY rough time that I needed to sort out.
Of course, I may enter the pinball scene yet ;)
Game on, folks. I'll do my best to get back into gaming. Not in the same way i used to...but still gaming.
Just without the obsession to own every game on the planet. ;)

LOL, yeah, the YouTube videos aren't exactly a good highlight. I mean, pronouncing internet slang out loud?
But I digress, good to see that you're not entirely quitting the scene. Just don't make fun of us NES lovers anymore, please? :D

You should totally sell your NES stuff as a lot and we could make a benefit out of it or something. "buy the stuff he hates the most!"

August 5 - I'm quitting gaming. I'm selling all of my stuff and moving to Reno. You probably won't ever see me again. Goodbye cruel world.
August 11 - Never mind. Don't know what I was talking about. Kthx.

Careful there. You can strip a gear shifting into reverse so quickly.
