View Full Version : Opinion: Super Smash Bros. N64 is better than SSB Melee

I constantly have this argument with some of my fellow gamers. Let me start out with some positives about Super Smash Bros. Melee for Gamecube.
-Beautiful Graphics
-Abundance of Characters
-Ear pleasing music and sound effects
But. It doesn't hold a candle in terms of control for the N64 version. Something about the controls in the Gamecube version just seem.... Off. The timing is different, and it seems like the placement of things in the enivronment that can hurt your performance just seem more random than the N64 version.
Long story short, I like the N64 version better. Which do you like better?

CUBE.
Honestly because I actually played that one. I've got SSB for the N64 and can't really remember playing it, but I did spend a decent amount of time on SSBM and although I do suck in comparison to those that really devoted time to it, I really did enjoy it quite regularly.

After playing Melee, the N64 version is so slow and clunky that it is almost unplayable when compared to the smooth slowdown-free gameplay of it's sequel.

Cube. Stu's response mirrors mine.
Even when it was out, I never got into the N64 version at all.

I say the gamecube version is more balanced, although I like some of the characters in the N64 version much more. Cube overall, though.

I'd rather play the version that doesn't feel like swimming in molasses.

Super Smash Brothers: Melee is one of the greatest fighting games of all time. The original N64 version is fun, but not even close to its sequel. The music, gameplay, 480p option, and overall presentation make it superior. Also, another reason (that most people don't seem to notice) are the unbelievable amount of stats. SSBM keeps track of every single thing you do in the game. If I want to see when I unlocked Dr. Mario or how many times I battled with Kirby, it's all right there. There's a reason Nintendo never lowered the price from $29.99...it's that damned good.

N64 Super Smash Brothers is one of my favorite games. I probably would have warmed up to Melee if I was still in high school, but me and my friends drifted away for college. As far as the N64 version being sluggish, it's only as sluggish as the player is. Check out some youtube videos for the online n64 version. I will agree that melee is MUCH more balanced.

N64 had a good amount of stats in the game too. How many hours logged for each character, a matrix of how many times each character killed another character, and others.

Melee. Best game on the Cube by a long shot, arguably one of the best fighting games ever made. Definitely the best single-player fighting game experience ever.
The original was fun, but it didn't hold my attention very long.

same here
I remember renting SSB64 and thought it was good but never really got into it.
Gamecube Smash Bros. :rocker: is completely different story though. I played this game for hours on end the same month of its release and still think its one of the best fighting games to date.

The 'Cube version. It's better looking, it plays a lot smoother, it's not quite so confusing when in the middle of a fightfest (some of the jagged edges threw me off... which resulted in my being thrown off the platforms more than once) and it just feels overall more polished.

I gotta say cube.
First time I played melee, I found it to be uncontrollably fast paced, and impossible to handle anybody without getting killed. But now I've adjusted, and the N64 one just seems like I'm playing in molasses.
The larger cast and variety of stages are also much nicer in the Cube version, and considering the depth the game has shown in tournament play, I'm not going to say there's nothing to it. N64 one was good...but Gamecube one was excellent.

I have to go Melee. I loved Smash Brothers to death, but it always seemed to feel like an experiment. When I played Melee, that was a whole different ballgame. Everything was polished, fleshed out, controlled better, was deeper, etc etc.
I always think of the N64 version as almost a proof of concept. Really good, but in comparison to Melee, practically non-existent.

I must admit that I can't be very objective about this given that I've barely played Super Smash Bros. (N64) and have logged hundreds of hours on SSBM, but the latter is one of my favorite games of the past ten years or so and is incredibly balanced and polished. Even without having extensively played SSB, I feel safe in saying it's vastly inferior to its successor.

Cube version. I loved the original, but Melee improved on the formula ten-fold. It's faster. It has fun challenges. It has more characters. It's got more levels and trophies. It's got more playing modes. Really fun to play with four people.
I cannot wait to get my hands on Brawl and play it online whenever I please.

Cube obviously, since it's basically an improved version of SSB. The only thing I miss for SSB is overpowered Ness, since I love EB so much.

I vote for Melee I just played it more and enjoyed it more. I didnt get to play the N64 version all that much, but my alliance is with the cube game.

Yeah, this. I've logged hundreds of hours of SSB:M with friends and roommates over the years. Going back to the N64 version is impossible.

Eh, honestly I voted for "They both suck." Given the choice, I probably wouldn't use the word "suck" to describe them as much as, "I just don't care for either one at all."
The thing is this... the single player game modes never held my attention enough to want to play through them repeatedly. And then the multiplayer options were rendered sort of useless since I rarely have three friends or more together playing games any more. (Yes, *I* suck.) Even when I would get people together, there was always at least one guy who played way too much beforehand and stomped us. No fun at all.
At gunpoint, like most others, I'm taking the 'Cube version. Played it more.

I played both religiously when they came out, and I can safely say the cube one is better in EVERY way. Now don't get me wrong, Smash 64 was a blast when it came out but it's got nothing, NOTHING on Melee. Better graphics, framerate, more characters, more levels, more to do. Adventure Mode was pretty cool, but they best was the scenario mode. I forgot what it was called, but there was 51 of them. Also more characters meant more board the platform/break the target levels, which was the first thing I beat in Melee upon opening the game. :)
If anything, I hope brawl does not do away with BTP/BTT as that like the best part of the game imo. :)

I used to be a Smash Brothers fanatatic, I played the hell out of the N64 version, I also played the hell out of the GCN version.
Overall I would say SSB:M is the clear winner, it just feels much tighter and more indepth. It's actually the only real reason I still own a GameCube!

Are you kidding me about the control? SSB for N64 is so sluggish compared to SSBM. I played SSB all the time at my friends house when it came out, and I loved it. It was a blast, but after playing SSBM you just can't go back. I played SSBM religiously when it came out, and it is so much smoother and the controls are so much better. SSBM is the clear winner also for its depth of modes and amount of characters. I expect SSBB to be even better!

I haven't really touched the GC much, although it appears nice and was pretty smooth. Since friends of mine owned N64s and the SSB 64 it was that and Mario Party as games of choice. Those two are some of my favorite games and have stuck with them. Maybe my view will change if SSBM comes home with me on day.

I played SSB on N64 like a madman, alone and with friends. The game was some of the most fun I'd ever had. I've logged an insane amount of hours into SSBM and it by far a much more superior game than the original SSB. More characters, more attacks, more stages, more everything. SSBM does everything SSB did only a million times better. Its an excellent example of how a sequel should be done IMO. Bring on SSBB.

Melee, though I think both are pretty overrated (and I bought the Gamecube to play it). To me, it's more of a party game than a true fighter, but many will disagree. I actually got bored of it pretty quickly--it doesn't have enough replay value to me (though collecting trophies was definitely fun at first).
Aaaanyways, I prefer Melee because of the faster gameplay and presence of Mewtwo.

Melee by a mile. I used to play it every day when I was at home (moved to Japan now and no longer have my Gamecube :( ). I remember that even after playing it for ages, I would still get the occasional surprise and unforeseen KO, which always kept the game fresh and exciting for me. I can honestly say that no other fighter I've ever played has had such a high fun-factor and logevity.
Can't wait for Brawl :D

SSBM on the Gamecube is by far my favorite of the two. I love the extra mile Nintendo went on making a fun fighting game that not only is a blast to play but the encourages all the unlockables that it does. The Wii version is going sell millions and satisfy alot of those people who are looking for a long term playing game.

I thought SSBM was better which is why there is still tournaments being held for it. (like the one at the evolution fighting game championships. www.evo2k.com)

Honestly, I'm the best N64 Super Smash Bros. player in the world. There's really no question about that (seriously).
So naturally, I think the N64 version is way better. I can't even play the one on the 'Cube. I feel like a little kid smashing buttons.

The N64 one. I thought SSBM was a disappointment.
