Famicom "Little Box" List

Anyone have a list of the Nintendo produced "small box" games for Famicom? These are the first releases for the system, and have a smaller box than later releases. Also, they all (I think) have the "Laser" cartridge art. See the example below if you have no idea what I am talking about.

I have most of my favorite Famicom titles already, so I am looking into expanding my collection to obtain all the small box games.

So Far this is what I have confirmed as far as having the "Laser" artwork on the carts...

Baseball
Devil World
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong III
Donkey Kong Jr.
GOMOKU NARABE (GO boardgame)
Golf
Mahjong
Mario Bros.
Pinball
SANSUU ASOBI (Arithmetic Game)
Tennis

There definitely could be more, and I think that some games like Balloon Fight and Ice Climbers had small boxes but not the laser artwork.

If anyone has some details about these earlier games, please let me know!

there are so many shapes to famicom boxes,i would for sure say it wasnt only the first batch that were of that size.

Yes, I know there are many shapes to Famicom games, but it is not so much about the shape as it is about the time of release (Early) and the developer (Nintendo). Anyway there is one main box size used for most of the Famicom games. Namco used clamshells, KOEI had special boxes for their simulation games, etc. Anyway these early Nintendo games had boxes barely larger than a Famicom cartridge itself. The artwork also had a similar style to every release.

I know some early Konami games (Goonies for example) also have a similar box size, but all of the later Nintendo produced games have the somewhat larger format boxes that most games came in later in the Famicom's life.

Also, check the label art on that Pinball cart. I am first looking for all games that have that design. I am also interested in Nintendo produced games with the small box but not that artwork.

I can't help with the Nintendo-published titles, but I can tell you that Namco didn't always use clamshells. They also sometimes used those very small boxes. Valkyrie no Bouken: Toki no Kagi Densetsu is one that I personally have, and I'm all but certain that Tower of Druaga is also the same size.

A little rude there? People are just trying to be helpful; don't shoot them down or you'll find people won't help you much at all. The Import-Mania board is a small community, but we try to be helpful.

Anyway, I assume you read Japanese since you are a Famicom collector. I did a little searching on Goo and came up with this shop:

They've got alot of cart pics there, so that should be able to give you a better idea. I don't know of any comprehensive lists of Famicom label variants, perhaps you can compile such a list for us?

Sorry it came across rude, I didn't intend it that way at all! It was just the second reply by someone saying that there are different box sizes etc.

I will definitely post the list here once I figure it out. I think that the list I made earlier up in the thread is at least "close" to complete. Although, there may be a few others to add.

OK, I found some more information.

Popeye is another game that came with the "laser" cartridge

Also, Popeye's English Game


Possible others include Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, & Wild Gunman—but I think these were actually the first Nintendo Famicom games with custom art. Then they reprinted all the original "Laser" logo games with similiar style artwork.

So basically all games released by Nintendo for the Famicom in 1983 & some in 1984 had the "laser" logos. I think the smaller boxes continued for quite a bit longer, but I am not sure about the details.

Well, you weren't extremely clear about what specific information you wanted, and the previous post was just saying that there were many different sizes period. I was more specific in saying that a certain company and certain games also have the same sized boxes.

You can't really control what responses you get on a message board. Even if they're not what you want to hear, information that's somewhat related to the subject might be helpful to someone else.

You've never played Devil World? It's kind of Nintendo's dirty little secret. You play a little dinasour-type creature who hatches from an egg and really represents a primitive Yoshi. You are thrust into hell and Satan is at the top of the screen. The screen scrolls in the direction Satan points. There are different types of levels, but most of them revolve around a pac-man "collect the dots" theme. In the first level, you pick up crosses and can use them to burn demons. In the second level, you pick up bibles and put them in some kind of tomb or something at the center of the screen.

The game is clearly from that Gumpei Yokoi/Balloon Fight era, and it got ported to Europe but never in the U.S. Due to all the potentially offensive imagery to a Western Christian audience, I have a feeling that's one Nintendo wants us to ignore. This from the company who brought sweat to Mortal Kombat.
