I guess this is proof that I should at least try out each game as I get it. I just put in a game I got several months ago (SSX 3 for the GameCube) and it won't work. Instead I got an odd message that states an error has occurred, that I should shut the power off and consult my GameCube instruction manual. Does this mean the disc is completely bad? Is this the GC equivilent of the infamous disc read error on other systems? I guess I'll have to look for another copy somewhere.:bawling:

Was it a new game? It might just need to be polished?

No, it was bought used. I may try cleaning it before I pitch it...

Call around for video rental and music shops to see if they have disc polishing machines, should make your game good as new for 2-5 bucks.

My nephew has one of those handheld game-repair gadgets and I tried that but it didn't help. It still won't work.

Those handheld devices are shit and are no where near as good as the professional machines.

First thing to check, does the Cube recognise it as a disc? Insert the game and turn on the power without closing the lid, or holding A to get the menu. Then hit up to get to the disc screen.
I've had exactly one game fail to work that I've bought and the Cube refused to see it as a disc. Upon close inspection I saw that the clear ring in the middle of the disc was damaged, cracked. Could be the issue here.
The only other disc I've ever had fail to work initially was the service test disc and that's because it only works on hardware 2002 and before (I finally got myself a launch US Cube and it worked fine).

When I insert the disc after I've turned it on, I get the disc screen telling me what the game is but then when I hit start to go to the game, the same error message shows up. Ah well...we wouldn't be gamers if something didn't malfunction once in awhile, right?

My first copy of Roadkill for the GC would crash with an error message on a fairly regular basis, so I bought another copy and it worked fine. And my demonspawn nephew scratched up my Phantasy Star Online disc enough that it would occasionally give error messages. I bought PSO Plus and again, worked fine. It seems that it's always tiny, nearly invisible scratches that makes the machine choke.
