I remember back in the day, Electronic Gaming Monthly showed a pic of Street Fighter 2 for the Nes.

I am just wondering why capcom never released this for the NES/Famicom?

Was the Nes just not capable of making an enjoyable SF2 version?

Depends on your definition of "enjoyable." A mildly enjoyable "it's good FOR the 8-bit NES" kind of enjoyable? Possibly. But it probably just wasn't worth it, with everyone pretty much owning the SNES (and the SF2 port) at that point in time already.

True

Probably would have been like the Game Boy version

We do not speak of that version. It does not exist.

How lame are we? I actually remember that vividly. Yeah, it looked pretty crappy but it was SFII. It would have sold at the height of the games popularity. I have played some weird hacks or early ROM code of a Master System version which was horrible so I think it's probably a good thing that an NES version never came out.

What do you expect Arcade on the Game Boy, Why do everyone shoot down the Game Boy Ports for, It's not like they could do a arcade port on it..They did a good job on it

The Master System SF2 wasn't that bad compared to other 8 bit beat em ups.

I thought that screenshot of the NES SFII was a hoax.

There are a few SF2s for the NES, they're all bootlegs and they're all really, really bad.

I remember that issue of EGM from back when I used to subscribe to gaming magazines. It was indeed a screenshot of a bootleg, and it was accompanied by a short article covering the then-developing problems with Asian piracy.

I imagine it would have been along the lines of TMNT: Tournament Fighters on the NES, which came out round the time of the SF2 craze. That is basically your benchmark for a later-day 8-bit NES head to head fighter. Trouble is, I never played that version of TMNT: Tournament Fighters so I have no idea how it turned out. Maybe someone here did.

I think an 8-bit port of Street Fighter 2 for the NES would have been pointless. Just as pointless as Mario is Missing or Mario's Time Machine. It is reasons like that which made the NES a joke to most gaming mags at the end. Wario's Woods, Tetris 2, Mario is Missing and Mario's Time Machine all appear on the NES in the twilight of its career. Sounds good on paper back then. Trouble is, you could also find them on the Super NES.

What should have been coming out on the NES during this time period was more original stuff like Kirby's Adventure, not stuff like Street Fighter 2, Super Mario World (rumored in EGM for a possible NES release) or Mortal Kombat (also rumored in EGM for the NES). Of course, the NES versions of TMNT: Tournament Fighters and Mighty Final Fight were also based on Super NES products but at least those were different than their 16-bit counterparts and not watered down ports.

Of course, as I write this I have Tetris 2 for the NES on it's way to me in the mail. But we'll pretend I never dissed that port.

The games does exist, and in that EGM issue you're referring to it was actually (then) titled Master Fighter II. Later Yoko Soft, the company responsible for programming the game, who I add did not have the permission of CAPCOM, thus making it a "boot" ... well, they did however actually call it Street Fighter II after the intial batches of Master Fighter II were sold out. As proof I have provided the picture of my actual Famicom cartridge that I snapped a photo of like 4 minutes ago...

The game was only released on the Japanese Famicom (and Asian Sphere) systems and not actually to the American NES, but it did indeed come out. Let me tell you, the game sucks ass in a big way. I tracked down this copy CIB (though just the cart was pictured above) from a Hong Kong connection I have late in 2004, simply because I had to own that game pictured of Chun Li in her stage from that EGM issue. Once I powered up the game however, I realized that aside from owning an "oddity" the game is complete ass. However, I will say in it's defense that it plays much better than K.O.F. 98' on the Mega Drive, which is pretty much unplaybe, but on that note TEKKEN Special is okay too. If you really want to see some weird stuff, look no further than the Hong Kong scene. There's a Mortal Kombat II game for the Famicom along with Fatal Fury Special too. Don't own those games though, so no pictures.

PEACE OUT.

The roms, however, are dumped, and have been emulated for years.

The NES hardware could have handled a somewhat playable version of SF2, but I don't believe it could ever reproduce the gameplay of the arcade, even if a six-button pad were created for it.

Games like Fatal Fury Special for Game Gear and Street Fighter Alpha for GBC prove that it is possible to make a fun fighter on 8-bit hardware.
