***PayPal Required for Listings in Some Categories***

10 August, 2007 | 10:38AM BST

We wanted to let you know that from next week, items listed in certain categories on eBay.co.uk will need to offer PayPal as a payment option or as the sole payment method.

We are doing this as part of our ongoing efforts to reduce fraud and protect buyers and sellers in the eBay community.

PayPal will need to be offered as a payment option on listings in the following categories:

* Video Games
* Health & Beauty

PayPal will need to be the only payment method on sales in the following category:

* Video Games: Consoles

If you would like to sell in the categories affected, please sign up for a PayPal account if you do not already have one.

o Sign up for a PayPal account
o Learn more about how PayPal protects buyers/sellers

We appreciate your continuing support in helping to keep eBay a great place to buy and sell.

Regards,

The eBay.co.uk Team

So in addition to rampant listing and final end % fees, they want to enforce Paypal for videogame sales to grasp even more money? I'm sure this will become site wide after the UK, again, is used as a test-bed. I see lots of videogames suddenly turning up in the wrong categories...

I don't like the fee's but it sort of makes sense, becasue If I sell a high priced console and or game, then I am automaticlly protected for a part of that purchase. If I like it or not :p

that makes sense to me. sure it will suck to have more fees, but video game consoles are definitely the biggest target of scammers. I don't know how many emails I've gotten from nigeria in the past couple years trying to get me to accept their fake payments.

I see a problem with this :
We all know that all a buyer has to say to paypal is that they never received the goods & paypal straight away freeze the money or refund the buyer & it doesnt seem to matter what proof you have of having sent the goods.
The idea of Paypal only is fine but they have to also have a balanced outlook with the goods not received complaints procedure.

Eventually, the terrible policies of ebay and Paypal will become so bad that it will leave them vulnerable enough for a worthwhile adversary to step in and gain ground. I can't wait to see the day, and I know it will happen if things keep progressing the way they have been.

I have gone from using ebay all the time to only using it to sell rares that the forums dont want. Personally I hate ebay and paypal, and will support anything else that can help me make spending money without raping me in process. So far, the real winner this year from me has been craigslist.

That's not true at all.

I have had over 10 people try to do chargebacks with Paypal. I had delivery Confirmation and a confirmed address that I shipped to and Paypal ruled in my favor.

Only issue is, you can hardly get online tracking and confirmed addresses to outside the US. I think that's quite a high factor reason a lot of US sellers have suddenly "shut up shop" on shipping abroad. Unless they trust the potential buyer such as myself when they see how long they've been on and their feedback.

I think part of possible issue... yeah wild speculation but I have a grounding in finance and business... is that perhaps eBay isn't seeing direct usage growth anymore, or very little. So they are having to try and "increase" their revenue in other ways.

Videogames appears to them to be a popular market and this is a way to attract more revenue from that particular sector.

Just a hypothesis, though one I figure that isn't actually that far from the mark...

Then there's always the "vintage" category...

hehe, I've been doing a bit of that ever since they jacked up the Final Value Fees for the Video Games category ...

Seems to have worked so far :)

I don't see the big deal since most people already accept PayPal as it is.

So what it sounds like you're saying your going to do is post your auctions in the wrong group AND not accept PayPal. Are you sure you really want to sell your items because it sounds like you're doing everything you can NOT to.

Well, anyone who looks using the search facility will still see your auction as long as you title it well - and this is how most people look for items - which can be seen from the fact that items in the correct category but with key words missing from the title consistently sell for less.

As for Paypal - I will be the judge of whether or not I want to accept it for something I am selling, not eBay. I am amazed that they are allowed to do this - it's a complete abuse of their effective monopoly of the online auctions market. I wouldn't be surprised if not too far down the line the OFT get involved in this. I may write to them.
