The article reports the findings of a study examining the various types of games offered for the XBox 360 so far.

The article left me with some significant questions due to it being very brief and not specific. But following the link to the source material - http://fpssource.net/2007/08/08/17-of-all-xbox-360-titles-are-fpstps/ - answered the questions for me.

Pretty interesting. One guy made a good point though, "Yeah, the library isn’t all shooters, but even 17 percent is a very large portion of the library (nearly 1 in 5 games is a shooter), especially when you consider that most stores don’t stock every title." (shortened quote) I just realized that he's right. When you go to Wal-Mart or something, you will find mostly Sports, Racers, and Shooters. So that leaves a lot of consumers to only buy those three major genres.

Exactly. It's not about "x titles in genre y exist". RPGs and Puzzle games in general are not stocked in large numbers or for very long by stores.

That's an interesting study, but the reality is, if you can't stand shooters, racing games and sports games, then the Xbox 360 might not be the dream come true system for you. That's pretty much the bottom line. Lucikly, I actually enjoy shooters and racing games (to a point), and I can even enjoy a good sports game here and there.

Also, I think the best game of 2006 for the 360 was Oblivion, and I'm not sure I would put Oblivion in the category of shooters. The game of the year so far in 2007 is Crackdown, and that definitely doesn't belong in the shooter category. Later this year we also have Mass Effect which is a definite game of the year canidate. Still, if you are more interested in games like Odin Sphere, Grim Grimorie and Persona 3, then the 360 is probably never going to really have tons of those kinds of games.
