The regular Super Smash Bros. Brawl (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/smashbros) updates just keep getting better as a Pokemon Trainer (http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/characters/pokemon_trainer.html) has been revealed as a playable character. While we're slightly bummed about not coming to blows with Ash Ketchum, the Pokemon Trainer in Brawl doesn't do his fighting directly. Instead, he warms up the bench and issues commands to his three Pokemon: Squirtle (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Squirtle_%28Pokémon%29), Ivysaur (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Ivysaur) and Charizard (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Charizard_%28Pokémon%29).

This isn't like say, Marvel vs Capcom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_vs._Capcom:_Clash_of_Super_Heroes#Gameplay) or Street Fighter EX 3 where you could control all of your characters at the same time. The trio is cycled in and out with a special command and in classic Pokemon fashion. All of the Pokemon share the same damage meter, but they all have their own individual stamina which will prevent players from sticking to just one.

Check out the update yourself for all the awesome, albeit, painfully embedded screenshots.

[Thanks, Whymog!]

Wasn't Ash created for the cartoon?

Ash was technically created for the cartoon, but he's based on the character art for the first pokemon game, and so was this "Pokemon Trainer" guy, so they're practically the same.

Having a character that's Squirtle, Charizard, and Ivysaur being swapped around is kinda cool. I hope this is it for pokemon characters though. This is the, what, fifth pokemon character? Pikachu, Pichu, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, and now "Trainer." Give it a rest, Nintendo. Work on getting us Sonic.

Only Pikachu is confirmed for Brawl though, so we will have to see what other Pokemon make it. I would say that Pichu is gone, as well as Mewtwo, but Jigglypuff probably has a good chance of coming back.

I hope they don't get rid of ANY characters. I don't see why they should. In fact, I hope the character select screen eventually looks something like this.

1) If Gex were to appear in a SSB game, then I can safely say that SSB would be finished.

2) No amount of crack will make Ratchet & Clank appear on a Nintendo console.

They can add as many as they want, the more the merrier. But I really hope they keep break the targets and board the platforms around. I loved those and with more characters each having their own stages, there would be more of them to complete.

I'm still holding my breath for Ness. I have a feeling he won't return though, although possibly the kid from Mother 3 will take his place.

You guys are examining the individual characters listed too much. It was a fake picture done as a joke, just including as many video game characters as they could. Of course nobody thinks that Nintendo is really going after Gex or Master Chief. The point is just that it's a ton of characters, and I think most people want there to continue being more and more characters.

Actually, I'd LOVE to see Little Mac. First one I caught in that mess, and y'know, that'd be pretty cool to play.

As far as the Pokemon Trainer being a part of it, that's an interesting twist on it. I wonder how it will really control though... Nintendo's always had a thing for great control, and I'm curious as to how they'll pull this one off.

The news report made me think it would be like KOF or Tekken Tag Tournament. Press a button and call one character to bring in another. That sorta gimmick.

Well for me this is my #1 must have game out of all the others and I mean I will be getting Halo 3, Bioshock and man others but there's nothing like Smash Brothers, I cannot wait for it

I would like them to release Smash Brothers 64 on the virtual console. but I cannot wait for Smash Brothers Brawl, They better have Luigi and Captain Falcon in it, those are my two main characters.

That is cool. Now if only they had Crystal (The girl from Pokemon Crystal) as a alternate costume...

Wonder why it's not Ash?
I was wondering that myself... but then I thought maybe they plan on making alternate costumes that are actually OTHER pokemon trainers... effectively, you'd get some free characters out of the deal, and the only tradeoff is that you wouldn't be able to name the character Ash.

Ash is based on Red, from the Red gameboy game (minus the skill...). That's the male Fire Red trainer. Fire Red is a remake of Red. Therefore it basically is Ash (only less obnoxious voice and total ineptitude at being a pokemon trainer).

Ash Ketchum is THE MAN.

It's not Ash, but I guarantee you everyone that plays the game will refer to him as such (especially since it's a hell of a lot easier and quicker to say "Ash" than "Pokemon Trainer")

And I agree with Ze_ro, they're most likely making the alt costumes other trainers... which would make sense... four players, and four generations of the portable game each had a different 'hero' character...
