Ouch.

But then again, IGN lost all credibility, to me several years ago.

Yeah IGN sucks, here is what other critics had to say:

I played that hour long demo, and I was hurtin' for more! It is a great game.

I agree with IGN having no credibility, they don't even specialize in games anymore.

I agree. While I did think the Eternal Sonata demo had a little more depth to it, I thouroughly enjoyed the BD demo. I think anything below maybe an 8.4 is a bit harsh.
Of course, I'm grading just the demo and not the full game...
This will be one of the first games I pick up when I get an Xbox 360.

I stopped treating review scores as the final word for determining how good a game is long ago. I've played too many highly rated games that I didn't like and plenty of poorly rated games that I did. This is why playable demos help a lot!
I'm definitely going to pick up Blue Dragon, but I'm not in any rush. My XBox 360 died yesterday, so I'll be waiting at least a few weeks to get it back from Microsoft... :(

I found the Eternal Sonata demo to be far more enjoyable than the Blue Dragon one. I'd love to see a Two Worlds demo, though. I only want to buy one RPG this fall and I'm making it a good one.

The art is by the Dragon Ball guy... that's enough for me to know to give the whole thing a pass.
Anybody else think that guy's art style is just hideous?

I wouldnt pass this game up , even for a pretty bad reason. I dont mind the art (i think i can get over akira toriyama being associated with dragon ball and dragon ball z)
Im merely getting this cause its made by hironobu sakaguchi and music is being done by nobuo uemastsu. Im sure it will be great.

IGN gave Godhand a 3.0 last year. This completely biased and petty review proved (beyond any doubt) that a majority of the IGN staff is laughably obsolete. Some of the writers have talent and tend to "get it" (watch the original God of War video review for an example of excellent video game journalism).
I don't think anyone is expecting Blue Dragon to be the ultimate JRPG by any means. It still looks like a lot of fun and is the first HD JRPG (a few more acronyms anyone?) of this generation. I'll still be buying this on day 1.

I was going to pick this up but it looks like Metroid Prime 3 is also coming out on the same day so i am going to have to put it on hold...

I've been feeling the same way for years and this is the reason why I generally stay away from game reviews and just play demos, watch trailers or ingame play and of course ask those who own it.
In regards to the game though, lots of advertisements out there but since I don't own a 360 it won't be comming home anytime soon. I will keep an eye out for it though when I know someone who has a 360 and the game.

I've always trusted IGN and GameInformer. I think reviewers give ratings based on the quality of the game, not how fun it is for them. I absolutely hate sports games but I can see that a lot of work goes into making ones like Madden and SSX great. I didn't find God of War fun at all but everyone here knows how the reviews for that went and I see that it's a quality game.
You can't trust the reviewers on every score they give but I think you can trust them most of the time.
About Blue Dragon. From the videos I've seen and the articles I've read it seems like they made it too simple. Everyone knows simple is good but not as simple as what I've read. I was really looking forward to the game until I saw that it might be the type I wouldn't want to completely play through. Having a bunch of famous RPG developers working together doesn't mean it's going to be good.......I can't saying the game isn't quality though, I haven't played it. If I have the extra $60 I'll probably get it.

Not like review scores mean anything compared to the actual review, but correct me if I'm wrong here... isn't a 7.9 supposed to represent a really, really good game?
I know the review scores kinda hover around the ol' 7 average and a lot of people believe that 7 = sucks and 8 = awesome, but a 7.9... that's pretty close to awesome!

See, I need to make an important distinction between a game's graphics and its art. A game can have fantastic graphics (high-res, great textures, lighting, etc.) and still be ugly. Likewise, very simple, 8-bit (or less!) graphics can be absolutely beautiful.
Everything that guy draws I find hideous. I will not play an ugly game, ESPECIALLY an RPG. If I'm going to be staring at the same people for 40 hours, I want them to look good.
As a side note, that's the exact reason I usually play female characters on MMO's haha. If I'm going to be staring at somebody's ass for months on end... well...

I finally finished Blue Dragon last week (had an intermission due to three red lights!) -- I'd give it a solid 8.
I did almost all the side quests, but no way I'm going after all the achievements. That would take more than 100 hours, I think.
Fun game, glad I bought it.

Gamespot just gave Blue Dragon a 6.0 (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/bluedragon/review.html). Ouch. Idiotic reviewers miss the big picture (i.e. if a game is fun) yet again. Think about it...what was the last JRPG that got a decent review?
Anyway, I'm still picking this game up as soon as my 360 comes back from being repaired.

I bought the full version of this game last night, and so far I have been enjoying it a lot. Great graphics, story, battle system. I love traditional Japanese RPGs so my opinion my be a bit lopsided. I must say when I played the demo, I wasn't very impressed. I bought the full version because like i said before, I'll take a JRPG any day, and have a much different opinion of the game. If I were to rate it....8/10. Plus there hasn't been any turn based rpgs on next gen consoles since Enchanted Arms (which I also had a great time with).

Personally I'm not turned off by a score of 7... or even a 6 for that matter. Both indicate that it's above average. Then again, I'm usually pretty hard on games and there aren't many that I'd place in the 8 range, let alone nine or ten. In fact only one deserves a ten in my book. (Ico.)
So meh, 7.9 still seems like pretty high praise to me.

I suppose you believe that a C is really average, too? I would guess that most publications average between a 7 and 7.5 for their average.
My own rating system is a little different...
10 = every video gamer everywhere should play this game
9 = every video gamer should play this game unless they hate the genre/license
8 = Must-have for genre/license fans, 50/50 for everyone else
7 = 50/50 for everyone
6 = Only buy if you're a fan of the genre/license
5 and below = only buy if you enjoy playing crap like people enjoy watching B movies.
6 = Only

Why didn't they just give it a flat 8?
7-point-anything sounds so mediocre, simply because of the 7.
I'm probably gonna pick this, and Eternal Sonata up, at the same time - get my RPG fix, for the year, in..

Of course, the real pro review criteria are more along these lines:
10 = Incredibly major release with lots of advertising dollars spent to make sure it gets a excellent review. The editors vacations are paid for in full.
8-9 = Standard big release with lots of paid advertising. Generic great review.
7 = A fairly big release, but the advertising revenue wasn't up to snuff. Still the developer/publisher is major enough for the publication to not want to piss them off, hence the non-descript rating accompanied by a non-descript bit of review text.
6 and below = At this level, the developer/publisher is not one that spends much money on advertising for their game with the publication and the editor doesn't mind throwing some mud about them. Reviews of this sort are given to the "joke reviewers" to write a bash piece and give an attention grabbing abnormally low rating.

IGN giving it a rating of 7.9 is not bad. For the sheer volumes of RPGs the Xbox 360 has(laughs), I am sure that this game will sell if it had even crappy reviews. It is great to see the 360 with a solid holiday lineup. Now about that hardware issue....

I would make these changes to it but pretty close overall:
7.5 to 7.9: good for the genre but average against all games
8.0 to 8.4: impressive but with flaws
8.5 to 8.9: great for the genre but might not be for everyone
9.0 to 9.4: outstanding
9.9 to 9.9: incredible
10: masterful
