View Full Version : Pirate MK games for Genesis?

Has anyone come across these at all? I have on the way to me what purport to be 'Mortal Kombat 5', 'Mortal Kombat 6' and 'Mortal Kombat 8'. They are all cart only, but the labels clearly give these titles.

Presumably they are either hacks of other games, or else they are just pirate versions of the existing Genesis MK games - anyone know anything about them, or should I be posting screenshots when they arrive?

More often than not, when you see a game with 'Title X' it is a pirate or hack of the original game. It is hard to say what you are getting though without seeing it.

Of course, screenshots are always nice!

Well, I will post some pics when they arrive. I am mostly expecting that they will be just pirate versions of the existing Genesis MK games, but if they're actually different games or hacks of some sort that will be quite interesting. One of them (MK8) comes on a light blue cart, which I've not seen before.

Finally got a hold of these today, and can report back on the actual content of the games. They all have weird subtitles, which I quote in full for their rather irrelevant madness.

1) Mortal Kombat 8 - Top Fighter

This doesn't appear to be a Mortal Kombat game at all, but a Streetfighter hack. It's got a bunch of wierd characters, including "Gees", a few SF2 characters and what look like a couple of Dragonball Z characters and some other randoms I can't identify. Backdrops look like they're lifted straight from SF2.

The funniest thing is the intro screen and the following montage if you wait at the title screen. The title screen is two heads facing each other, one looks like some kind of bald-headed boxer and the other has a slightly oriental look. Fair enough. But then. Oh boy! Leave it a few seconds and you're treated to a montage that seems to be a selection of random clips from various other games mashed together - first, a boxer comes along and punches out what looks like a player from a basketball game, then there's a few random basketball animations and a couple of unidentifiable fighters popping up onto the screen. It's truly surreal, and I'm afraid I laughed so much I didn't take it in too well. I'll try and get screenshots and/or video up sometime, it's hilarious.

2) Mortal Kombat 6 - 28 People Midway

As far as I can tell this is just a fairly straight pirate hack of one of the existing Megadrive MK games with a slightly adjusted title screen - although not being a MK aficionado I couldn't tell you exactly which one it is. There are indeed 28 fighters to choose from on the menu screen, although some of them appear to be duplicated.

3) Mortal Kombat 5 - Sub Zero Mythologis (sic)

Saved till last as it's the most interesting. This one appears to actually be a completely new game, albeit a rather shit one. It's a side scroller, you play Sub Zero and jaunt along through some supposedly temple-like place. You have a punch and a kick attack, and a low punch and low kick attack, and you can jump and turn round. However you don't appear to be able to do jumping attacks. You have three lives and a health bar, and have to fight baddies along the way, avoid acid drips and pillars that attempt to squish you. I didn't get much further than that, because the squishing pillar annoyed me too much. Plus I'm hungry and haven't had dinner yet.

Anyway, that's the lowdown. A little bit disappointed that there wasn't a bit more to 6 & 8 than that, but I was kind of expecting it. Nicely suprised by MK5 though - crap as it is, you have to give some respect for the attempt to actually make a proper new game.

This is really interesting stuff. I've never heard of any of these (which doesn't necessarily mean they were totally unknown, of course, since I'm no Mega Drive expert or anything).

It would be interesting to figure out if the Top Fighter is an original game using borrowed graphics or a graphics hack on top of an existing Genny fighter.

The Sub-Zero Mythologis one sounds the most interesting for sure, though. Sounds like it's a pirate version of an official Mortal Kombat game that was released on the N64 and Playstation. It would again be really nice toknow if it's an entirely original game or a hack of some other side-scroller on the Genesis.

Screenshots would be really nice. And if they're undumped, so would ROM images.

I've had half-a-dozen experience's with products like that for the Sega Genesis. They have always turned out to be hacks of existing titles already released for the genesis.

Sounds like MK3 to me.

Well there is a MK: Mythologies: Sub Zero that came out for the PlayStation. It was a mix of a fighter and a platformer... failing at both miserably. Look familiar?

Yeah, it has definitely tried to copy that game - the life bars and the no. of lives icon are similar. Obviously the Megadrive can't do those kind of backdrops though, so they are lot more basic. Here's a scan of the carts

The Sub Zero Mythologis game is not a hack of any game that I know of, it's quite distinct as far as I can tell - although a few of the sprites may have been lifted from other games. I'll try to get some pics up sometime so you can see.

Sounds like the games are already dumped, but if it turns out not then if someone wants to dump them that's fine with me - just let me know how I would go about it

Well, I found a couple of screenshots online for the MK8 - Top Fighter game.

The other I am pretty sure is just MK3 with a hacked intro screen.

I'm guessing that mythologies hack isn't this one (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/288/). ;)

I also read about this freely available MK3 ROM hack (http://www.thegshi.org/vb/showthread.php?t=1066) which seems like a pretty thorough piece of work. (Alas, it seems it won't even work with a standard version of Gens.)

either way, it still doesn't look like a hack of street fighter at all.
